Why Harley-Davidson staged the lady opposite at the start of the Sportster series is due to the zeitgeist of the 50s. The history of the sporty V2 line began in 1957.
"Youth is the only thing worth having", once sighed poet dandy Oscar Wilde. But staying young is an art that is only given to a few. The Sportster series from Harley-Davidson is definitely one of them. The model family celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2017. This makes it one of the most traditional series in the entire motorcycle industry.

In 1957 the first Sportster rolled off the assembly line
If you want to understand why a Harley-Davidson Sportster is simply timeless, you have to take a deep look in the rear-view mirror: in the mid-1950s, Americans were into British motorcycles, and Harley-Davidson can match the fast English women with its side-steered K models no longer stand up properly. The time is ripe for something new: The Motor Company presents the Sportster. The first of its kind rolls out of the factory halls in 1957 – with a 883 cm³ 45 ° OHV V-Twin, which forms a unit with the transmission and is embedded in a modern chassis. Customers and the trade press cheer, the original model is followed by numerous, constantly updated and improved Epigones, and the Sportster is advancing to "the" US muscle bike of the sixties. Sports offshoots such as the Flat Track Racer XR 750 and the Harley-Davidson Streamliner now reap laurels on racing slopes and the Bonneville Salt Flats, such as the motorcycle speed record in 1970: 427.5 km / h. And the Sportster continues to mature like good whiskey. Their displacement grew – in 1972 initially up to 1000, 1986 up to 1100 and 1988 up to 1200 cm³. Meanwhile, a new generation of engines has replaced the classic “Ironhead”: 1986 is the "evolution"-The era of the Sportster dawned.
Five years later it was given a five-speed gearbox, and in 2004 a completely new generation of models with numerous improvements including a new frame made its debut. But despite all the changes, the Sportster always remains true to itself, it has never denied its original American character. "Be yourself in every situation", the developers seem to have impressed on her, because the time is too short for role-playing games.

The many Sportster models that made history include the Forty-Eight, one of the bestsellers in the Harley range since 2010, the XR 1200, which opened a new sports chapter for the model family in 2008, and the Cafe Racer, arguably the most extraordinary Sportster. In 1977 this black beauty, designed by Willie G. Davidson, took asphalt under her wheels.
In 2017 – just in time for the 60th Sportster anniversary and the 40th birthday of Cafe Racer – Harley-Davidson is honoring its two-wheeled icons with an accessory collection called "Cafe Custom Accessories". The rear section, clip-on handlebars, recessed footrests and other features make a standard Sportster Roadster a stylish one-off in the street racer look of the Seventies – an exclusive driving machine that seems to be whispering to its owner: "Come and play with me. And take your time for it, because that is the secret of eternal youth!"
