All Duels - Duel Honda NC700X Vs Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom: culture shock - Shortness of breath ...

These are undeniably two philosophies that clash through these two road trails. Will the reasonable pragmatism of the Honda NC700X prevail over the fun versatility of the Suzuki 650 V-Strom? Bipolar duel test…

Panting…

If the low extension of the Honda twin is hardly penalizing in the city, its "lack of breath" comes to light as soon as the horizon emerges. Extremely linear and hardly demonstrative, the twin cylinder is only really expressed from 3500 rpm on higher gears and steep at 6500 rpm … as on a gasoline car !

Admittedly, the times are correct with regard to its modest power, but the range of use is quite small, just like the sensations … And if these characteristics are not really disturbing in normal use, they become frustrating in the viroleux or rapid overtaking.

Alas, this is – according to Honda – the price to pay for a fuel-efficient engine. If the internal friction of this new engine has been reduced to the maximum, the limitation of its maximum speed several thousand revolutions lower than that of the competitors helps as much – or even more – to contain the consumption. Because the less the mechanics take turns and the less it needs gasoline: CQFD !

It’s a shame because the rest of the bike is very pleasant to drive. Intuitive and reassuring, it allows you to have fun. Its front axle is a little less lively than that of the Suzuki, but it shows an irreproachable stability which will reassure the beginners..

Did the unfortunate Honda twin-cylinder deserve to be so restrained? It is true that the result is rather positive since the NC700X consumed on average only 3.8 l / 100 km in mixed use during our test. Not bad for a motorcycle of almost 700 cc and 218 kg !

However, if you want to go and kiss your grandmother 300 km from here, the Honda can be a little more voracious: a 100% motorway stage swallowed at 130 km / h flat – that is to say 139 km / h at the speedometer – increases consumption to 5.4 l / 100 km.

Under the same conditions, the DL 650 V-Strom was barely more greedy and consumed on average only 4.9 l / 100 km in mixed use. Except that the Suzuki extends the stride in a much more enjoyable way! In addition, it also has excellent autonomy with its 20-liter tank..

Verdict: clearly define your priorities

Before investing in one of these two – good! – motorcycles, it will be necessary to make a good inventory of the use which one will have of them and of what one expects of them … in particular with the Honda !

It should be borne in mind that the NC700X is a very wise and hyper pragmatic motorcycle. It is more cut out for the "motorcycle-work" than for the long course or the show. For its part, the Suzuki is more versatile, more comfortable and much more endearing, but it makes it pay significantly more to purchase, as in consumption….

The new V-Strom has indeed suffered the rise in the yen since it is now displayed at € 8,199 (excluding promo). Compared to the 6,490 € that will have to be paid for a well-born NC700X, thrifty and devoid of major defects, admit that there is something to think about…
