All Duels - Duel Xciting 400 ABS Vs MBK Evolis 400 ABS: with knives drawn! - For a few more horses ...

Launched in the spring of 2013, the Yamaha X-Max and Kymco Xciting 400 are doing well in the segment of mid-displacement GT scooters. This year, the battle intensifies with the arrival of the twin MBK Evolis 400 and the ABS… MNC compares them for you !

For a few more horses…

On the engine side, the Xciting 400 clearly wins over the Evolis 400, whether it be in the "little game" of standing starts as well as of times. More powerful by 5 horses compared to the MBK / Yamaha for an equivalent weight, the Kymco takes full advantage of its better weight / power ratio.

The Xciting 400 also features a responsive and well-tuned continuously variable transmission (CVT). At the green light, the Kymco scooter takes off like a bullet at the slightest rotation of the throttle, leaving an Evolis / X-Max 400 in its wheel, yet not lymphatic. !

The observation is similar at the level of reminders between 90 to 110 km / h on the road and from 110 to 130 km / h on the motorway: the Kymco dictates its law and allows more secure overtaking than the MBK. Well launched, the Xciting 400 easily hangs a good 165 km / h counter (150 real) on the flat, exceeding the Evolis 400 by about 5 km / h (160 counter for 150 real).

The MBK makes up for it thanks to its more melodic sound and its slightly lower fuel consumption: 4.8 l / 100 km measured during this duel against 5.1 l / 100 km for the Kymco. And the advantage is transformed, since the Evolis 400 has a 14 liter tank against only 12.5 L for the Xciting 400.

The theoretical autonomy is therefore around 291 km on the "Franco-Japanese" scooter and 245 km on the Taiwanese. A difference far from negligible when the small urban service stations close one after the other…

Already in a tight fight in all areas, the Evolis / X-Max 400 and the Xciting 400 are trying in 2014 to make the brakes by adopting an optional ABS (200 euros at Kymco, 500 at MBK / Yamaha). In use, the Taiwanese scooter is once again the most convincing with powerful, biting and dosable braking, but also less intrusive in terms of force feedback at the lever when the ABS is triggered..

Only downside: this braking is associated with tires whose perfectible grip more easily causes wheel locks – and therefore more frequent triggering of the ABS … with the key to the inevitable lengthening of the stopping distance which goes with.

The "Japanese made in France" scooter also has convincing braking, but which requires to force a little more on the levers to deliver all its power. Small hands will regret the lack of spacing adjustments here. Its ABS reacts quickly to blockages and is just as effective as that of its rival.

Verdict: an extremely sharp challenger

At the end of this duel, we have to admit that the Kymco Xciting 400, designated challenger of the Yamaha X-Max and MBK Evolis 400, does not lack either assets or arguments to convince. It even takes the ascendancy over its rival in many ways, especially in terms of power and equipment..

However, and despite a lower selling price (€ 5,999 with ABS against € 6,499 for the MBK / Yamaha with ABS), the Taiwanese scooter is struggling to establish itself commercially. Arrived on the market during the same period (spring 2013), these two 400 cc scooters-GT display very different volumes: 966 Yamaha X-Max 400 sold in 2013 against only 231 Kymco Xciting 400 !

The arrival of ABS should not a priori upset the order of things and that’s a shame, because the Kymco Xciting 400 amply deserves our attention. It doesn‘t lack much to totally convince, other than a bigger trunk, a sexier dashboard and a better quality of finish..
