Piaggio MP3 Yourban 300 LT test: the ideal compromise ?

All Reviews - Piaggio MP3 Yourban 300 LT Review: the ideal compromise? - 1.- Two wheels are better than one!

The latest addition to the MP3 family, the Yourban 300 LT incorporates all the attributes that have made Piaggio three-wheeled scooters so successful, but with a good pinch of sex appeal and maneuverability. Concluding? Test.

1.- Two wheels are better than one !

Aesthetically, the differences between a "standard" MP3 and its "Large Tread" counterpart are minimal: imposed by legislation, the brake pedal activating the front and rear discs (as annoying as it is delicate to use), the remote turn signals and the double license plate lights are the only feature distinguishing the MP3 Yourban 300 LT from the "all-short" Yourban 300.

Almost imperceptible both to the eye and to driving, the widening of the track by 45 mm also does not entail any technical change: the scooter of course retains its famous tilting front axle, made up of four aluminum arms fixed to the steering column by as many joints. However, the first key to the success of MP3s is first of all this elaborate mechanism which allows angles up to 40 °.

Thanks to its 13-inch front wheels (12 inches on the standard MP3), the MP3 Yourban offers stability and handling that no other two-wheeled model can claim: features too attractive than reassuring for an inexperienced driver or that the precarious balance of a "traditional" motorcycle or scooter frightens.

Especially since the Yourban 300 LT also receives the electro-hydraulic "Roll Lock" system which is used to block the front suspension when stationary or at low speed (below 20 km / h) via a button placed on the right commodo. This device, which shuts off automatically when accelerating, allows the Yourban to stay balanced on its three wheels without having to put one foot on the ground or even crutch it when stationary. !

In use, the "Roll Lock" still requires a minimum of practice so as not to end up in a delicate situation: if the front axle is not perfectly level when the function is activated, as during a stop on a sloping road, the scooter will tend to move towards the side where it is heeling.

It will then be necessary to make sure to compensate by counterbraking generously when restarting. Another detail to take into account: switching off the engine does not automatically activate the "Roll Lock". This means that you have to remember to engage it before getting out of the vehicle or when you want to park it on its practical central stand..

Indicated by a warning light on the dashboard, activating and deactivating the "Roll Lock" also triggers a brief audible alarm: in use, this quickly becomes annoying for the user and for nearby pedestrians….

MP3s being legion in town, the "beep-beep" concert at each red light only amplifies the level of noise nuisance in urban areas. Too bad, because the Yourban 300 LT is also quite quiet, its 278 cc single cylinder delivering a regular and muffled sound..
