Brutale 675 test: MV Agusta’s austerity plan
Compact, firm, vigorous: these adjectives define the little roadster just out of the MV Agusta factory. It is also in Varese that the Italian manufacturer invited us to test drive his Brutale 675, or B3 for close friends…. Test !
Italians launch their B3 plan
Since 2008, we know: "it is the crisis" … And it is on this uninviting theme that Massimo Bordi, vice-president of MV Agusta, decided to start the press conference concerning the all new Motorcycle from the Varese manufacturer: the Brutale 675 !
"We were producing around 6,000 motorcycles per year before the crisis", indicates in the introduction the right-hand man of Giovanni Castiglioni, the heir of the famous Claudio (read). However in 2009, the number of sales fell to 2213 units before rising to 3273 the following year and stabilizing at 3591 in 2011.

"It was four years ago that we started our work on the three-cylinder platform. For us, this is an opening to cheaper and therefore larger markets.", explains Signore Bordi to European journalists. According to this former Ducati (read), the F3, B3 and other versions – to come! – will make up for the shortfall due to the drop in sales of F4 and Brutal "B4"…
In a recent interview with our English colleagues from Fastbikes, Giovanni Castiglioni admitted that he was inspired by the Porsche example, "because their philosophy is the right one considering our size. Our motorcycles don’t age: even the first F4 compared to the new one … it’s an older F4, like a Porsche 911 from the 1970s".
But the comparison does not stop with the only maintenance of these two formidable dynasties on two and four wheels. Supported by major brands (Harley-Davidson in 2009 on one side, Volkswagen on the other) these two small manufacturers are venturing into new territories to increase their sales.
At Porsche, the bet has already been won: in 2011, the brand created by Ferdinand – 80 years ago! – signed a new record "with a total of 118,867 vehicles sold globally, an increase of 22% year-on-year", analyzed the manufacturer from Stuttgart.
"We intend to continue on the path to growth in 2012", assures the German brand, convinced that"the new generation of 911 will support salesLast year, however, the best-selling Porsche model was the new Cayenne, representing half of the sales volume (59,987 units).
By releasing its Supersport F3 and its Brutale 675 roadster version, MV Agusta intends to experience the same success and is already counting on 8,050 sales in 2012 (including 5,150 3-cylinders!) And 10,380 units in 2013 (7,080 "triple"). The method used is the same: to get the right product out on the right segment (read). Regarding the segment, that of mid-displacement roadsters is certainly better than that of the Supersport, at half mast in all countries.
"We launched the F3 earlier than the B3 because in our opinion it was the most logical choice in terms of marketing, sales and finance.", specifies the MV Agusta team. Sticking perfectly to the image of the brand, it must be recognized that the F3 represented the best springboard for the new Trepistoni engine (read).
"But the two motorcycles have been developed at the same time in order to optimize human resources and the efficiency of the platform policy.", specifies Paolo Bianchi, big boss of CRC (Centro Ricerche Cagiva, the Italian brand still belonging to MV Agusta).
Aesthetically, we must admit, the result is up to expectations: the F3 like the B3 have nothing to envy their prestigious big sisters. And their data sheets, whose maximum values have deflated as their release dates approached, remain very promising….
As for the price of the Brutale 675, it is almost unbelievable: the B3 is quite simply – and by far – the most affordable of all new MV Agusta. But on the road, what is this bomb really worth? This is what MV Agusta allowed us to discover over a hundred kilometers. Avanti !
