Kymco MyRoad 700i review: attacking GT maxiscooters
After four long years of gestation, the Kymco My Road 700 is finally making its appearance on the GT maxi scooter market. Site was able to try it in preview in the vicinity of Nice during its official presentation to the press. Test.
Efficient and efficient mechanics
Long matured and refined by the R&D department of the Taiwanese manufacturer, the twin-cylinder engine of the My Road 700i had to be at least as efficient and efficient as rival engines … which is the case! Contrary to what some rumors let suppose, this engine has nothing to do with the other twin cylinder manufactured by the Kymco factories, the one which equips the C600 Sport and C650 GT scooters of the German manufacturer BMW Motorrad.
Designed 100% by in-house engineers, this 699.5cc inline-twin features state-of-the-art architecture with dual camshaft, 4-valve cylinder head and electronic fuel injection.
The engine produces 58.8 horsepower at 7,250 rpm, which is 12 horsepower more than a Yamaha T-Max 530 and 7 more than a Honda SW-T600. A level of power and price which position it in fact at the center of the maxi GT scooters category with twin-cylinder engines.
With the ignition on, the Kymco engine is not the most discreet, in particular by the audible implementation of the injection pump. Once started, the Taiwanese twin delivers a full sound, with small whistles characteristic of this type of architecture when the throttle is briefly applied. Engaging !
The start is smooth, with a roundness and a welcome progressiveness. At very low speed, the dosage of the handle remains delicate because the CVT transmission "stalls" past a certain threshold, forcing the driver to keep a slight trickle of gas so as not to suffer destabilizing jerks during maneuvers, as on many other maxi scooters.
By accelerating more frankly to get started, we take full advantage of the generous torque of this engine (63 Nm at 5500 rpm) which allows full acceleration and power from mid-range, despite the substantial mass of the machine.
The grip response is straightforward and vigorous, with the My Road 700i allowing safe and quick overtaking on the roads, as well as crisp and powerful starts in the urban cycle. By forcing the pace on expressways, the revving remains frank up to 130 km / h but then weakens. Not having had the opportunity to achieve a true maximum speed on the circuit, Site cannot validate the 170 km / h counter announced by the manufacturer….
On the fuel consumption side, the My Road 700i is announced at 5.5 l / 100 km on average, a figure that we were also unable to verify during this quick contact, just like the autonomy which would then be the order of 270 km reserve included. In any case and in view of the maximum speeds authorized in France, the performance of the My Road 700i seems largely satisfactory..
