Peugeot Citystar 125i scooter test: urban … but not only !
After ten years of good and loyal service, the Elystar 125 was waiting for the next generation … It is now done since Peugeot has unveiled its successor, the Citystar 125i scooter. Trial under the Saint-Tropez sun !
Citystar 125i: the right measure ?
Displayed 640 euros cheaper than the Satelis 125 and above all less imposing (-17 cm and -5 kg), the new Peugeot Citystar 125i scooter fills the gap left vacant in the range of the French manufacturer since the discontinuation of the Elystar 125 , whose line and design were beginning to date.
This new Citystar 125i is therefore presented as more elegant, safer and just as practical. Its design is certainly more classy with its chrome grille – a nod to the automotive range of the Sochaux Lion – and its dual front optical.
The lines are also softer and less pruned with a billhook than on the Satelis. Its pearlescent or metallic colors will leave the choice between the navy blue / metallic gray of our test, black, metallic gray and a very chic metallic beige.
To contain its price below the € 3,000 mark, the Citystar 125i does not do anything superfluous and is satisfied with proven solutions but presented with taste. The dashboard, for example, does not display a tachometer but is as readable as it is elegant.
The trunk under the saddle easily accommodates a full face helmet as well as a jet or a standard size document holder. There is also a storage compartment with a 12 V socket and, as on the Elystar 125, a flat floor very useful for everyday use with its package holder.
In addition to the classic central stand, the Peugeot scooter is also equipped with a handy side stand because it does not cut off the engine when it is deployed. This makes it possible to heat the single cylinder without necessarily being on the power plant, knowing that a safety prevents opening the gas..
Not so compact
Of a size certainly more compact than the Satelis, the Citystar is despite everything hardly lighter than its elder since it weighs only 5 kg less: 160 kg against 155 kg dry. Considerable weight for a 125 cc urban scooter …
In addition, its 795 mm high saddle is too wide, which could hamper those less than 1.70 m to calmly put both feet on the ground. Despite everything, the Citystar 125i is quite easy to handle thanks to its good overall balance and natural driving position..
The raised passenger seat provides good lumbar support while the feet can rest flat on the floor or diagonally against the apron. Peugeot engineers claim to have done a lot of work on their single cylinder LFE (for Low Friction Efficiency) 125 cc 4-stroke, water-cooled and powered by electronic injection.
The goal seems to have been achieved since our Citystar not at all broken in (less than 150 km) was already hanging on the 125-128 km / h counter. Beautiful perf! Another good point: the rather present and unpleasant noise of the old Peugeot mechanics has been considerably reduced. French engineers have announced a gain of three decibels at high speeds, which "corresponds to a halving of the sound level", assures Peugeot.
The Citystar 125i would also be more fuel efficient: Peugeot estimates the gain compared to the old eighth of a liter at 1 liter per 100 km and expects an average of 3.5l / 100 km for its new 125 cc scooter. Unfortunately, the limited duration of this contact did not allow us to verify the manufacturer’s data. Finally, note that a Citystar 200i version will support the 125 cc, mainly for the Italian market.
Who can do the most can do the least
With its 13-inch wheels, the Citystar’s cycle part is up to its engine. On the roads of the Var, which alternate good and bad surfaces, tight bends and large curves, its handling has been particularly convincing..
The scooter remains healthy in all circumstances, while ensuring firm but correct comfort. The braking turns out to be particularly brilliant, combining wonderfully feeling and power. This is also explained by the excellent original tire fitting, also French, since the Peugeot is fitted with Michelin Pilot SC.
Able to play on small roads, the Citystar will therefore be largely up to normal city use. Available at the start of June 2011, this new Citystar 125i will certainly not revolutionize the 125 cc scooter market, but it has all the arguments for a successful career..
Finally, its price will eventually convince the most skeptical since it is already set by Peugeot at € 2,999. On the other hand, the version equipped with the brilliant ABS / PBS (anti-lock, distribution and brake assist) of the brand will not be marketed until 2012 at a price that remains to be defined..
