All Tests - Three red balls tumble at Derbi! - One engine, three sports cars

Derbi has just drawn three sports news: the GPR and the Senda DRD SM and R. Equipped with the same 125 cc 4-stroke 4-valve engine, these three red balls intend to become the benchmarks in speed, supermotard and enduro. One, back, very: test !

One engine, three sports cars

In the catalog of 125 cc Derbi, one found until now "one Cross City, two Senda Baja, two Terra and two Mulhacen … but Derbi was absent from the sports segment !", identifies the marketing manager of the Spanish brand.

In 2009, therefore, the Spanish manufacturer reacted with three new models to compete with Yamaha and its YZF-R 125 and WR, Honda and its CBR125R, Suzuki and its DR SM, Aprilia and its RS, as well as other Korean, Taiwanese and even brands and machines. Chinese rages on our roads and paths.

In 2003, "97% of sportswomen in Europe were 2-stroke", observes Derbi. The following year, the arrival of the CBR made plunge this percentage to 33%, the YZF R125 carrying the blow of death in 2008:"two-stroke only represent 13% of sales today".

So, when choosing an engine for its new balls, Derbi reasonably turned to the Piaggio 4-stroke, 4 valves, double overhead camshaft and liquid-cooled unit that already equips its Mulhacen and Terra (read our and our ).

With its 15 horsepower at 9,250 rpm, "it is the best 125 4-stroke engine on the market in terms of performance", assures the Spanish brand which has belonged to Piaggio since 2001,"and its character is reminiscent of a 2-stroke".

Equipped with a 30 mm diameter carburetor, an automatic choke, an electric starter and a six-speed gearbox, the single-cylinder (58 x 47 mm stroke and bore) responds "naturally" to the standards of emission control Euro3.

In the Senda family, the risk of cannibalization is therefore remote: the Senda Baja (SM and R) are equipped with a "simple" 4-stroke single cylinder, 2 air-cooled valves, five-speed gearbox, less valiant than that of the new ones. Senda DRD.

As for the GPR 125, it ideally supports the already existing GPR 50: the family link is also visually obvious, especially when viewed from the front. "We are the motorcycle school", considers Derbi whose young customers will now be able to continue their training on a sports car of the same brand as their first 50 cc motorcycle….
