2013 BMW C 650 GT Vs Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive: The Roads Are Nice !
The Suzuki Burgman 650 had reigned without competition for ten years in the GT maxiscooter market, but the arrival of the BMW C 650 GT forced the Japanese manufacturer to review its flagship. What about today ? Big GT scooters face to face.
Scooter GT: a complex specification
Remember that the two letters GT stand for "Grand Tourisme". And it is true that these two maxiscooters really allow you to travel: their saddle comfort is remarkable, especially since it is embellished with a real backrest to spare the rider’s lumbar region..
In practice, each one puts forward its arguments. The Burgman 650 is ultra comfortable, but the protection offered by its bubble can be improved and above all creates a depression in the back in the high position. The saddle and the suspensions of the C 650 GT are firmer, but its protection is more pleasant because it is devoid of eddies and depression.
As on the BMW K1600 (and), two deflectors make it possible to direct the air flow towards the torso of the pilot: interesting equipment in hot weather in town, even if they are more effective on 6-cylinder motorcycles. from the German manufacturer. Note also that the motor of the electric bubble seemed to us in small shape on this test model.
With their small 15-liter tank, the Suzuki and the BMW do not offer a "maximum" range. Even if Suzuki has indeed succeeded in lowering the consumption of its Burgman 650 – MNC recorded a drop of one liter compared to our previous 2009 comparison, with 5.4 l / 100 km against 6.4 -, the indicator reserve lights up around 200 km at a leisurely pace.
It is a bit better on the BMW which begins to feel thirsty around 220/230 km, thanks to an average consumption of 5.1 l / 100 km. Not bad at all for a two-wheeler with automatic transmission whose weight and wind resistance are also high.
The duo is obviously a delight aboard these two scooters, which will be happy to welcome the miss and her "little" things. The Executive version of the Burgman 650 (priced at 900 euros more than the Genuine version) even has a very practical passenger backrest for long distances..
Verdict: victory by technical knockout
In absolute terms, the observations to be drawn from this duel are quite simple: heavy riders not in a hurry can opt with their eyes closed for the Burgman 650, while the C 650 GT is for those for whom sportiness must also be done. part of the program.
On this point, the German cycle part surpasses in rigor and precision the Japanese. The BMW engine is also more efficient, although a little less pleasant in some aspects. On the practical side, the Bavarian manufacturer’s GT spearhead also offers thoughtful details, such as its automatic handbrake which engages when the side stand is deployed..
On the other hand, its price – and that of its options – can make you hesitate: our test model is displayed at € 12,570 (11,550 euros + 805 euros for the Highline pack + 215 euros for the alarm), a sum rather pretty for a 650 cc scooter … Second reason for hesitation: the finish and the quality of manufacture which are not – for the moment – up to this "premium" positioning.
According to our information (read next page), BMW Motorrad treats or has dealt with these "youthful defects" and is deploying considerable resources to achieve the expected level of satisfaction. In the meantime, the Burgman 650 traces its course serenely by relying on its unstoppable quality / comfort / price ratio to seduce: the Genuine version (without seat and heated grips or passenger backrest) starts at € 9,999, with an Executive model at € 10,899.
