Alpenmasters 2013: 48 HP motorcycles
48 hp bikes in comparison at the 2013 Alpenmasters
When 22 motorcycles and twelve testers from five countries meet on the 2715 meter high Col de la Bonette, there can only be one question: who will be the new front runner at the MOTORRAD Alpine Masters?
Peter Mayer, Eva Breutel
07/29/2013
Although there is not much power, there is still a lot of fire in it: the bikes in the 48 hp class come with completely different concepts. The scent of freedom and adventure wafts through Yamaha’s classic Enduro XT 660 R, the classy one Kawasaki Ninja 300 gives the racing roll, the naked KTM 390 Duke relies on lively lightness, and the Honda CB 500 X falls into the category of trendy crossover machines.

On one point there is agreement: Both the singles from KTM and Yamaha and the two-cylinder from Honda and Kawasaki come up with a very short translation. That’s a good thing, because otherwise the engines in the Alps, which are not exactly strong as a bear, threatened to starve to death on the mountain.
Especially since not even all candidates have the 48 hp that the new A2 driving license allows. Because the KTM 390 Duke did not achieve the required power-to-weight ratio, KTM had to throttle it. But at least 46 hp came out on our test bench, and they feel lively and funny as long as you drive the Duke mainly through valleys and over not-too-rugged mountains. Then she whispers KTM 390 Duke Busy and agile around curves and bends and creates a full 20 points for its superb handling. At an altitude of 2000 meters – like on the way to the Col de la Bonette – the KTM runs out of breath.
The KTM 390 Duke weakens a little in the mountain air
A cyclist lets her KTM 390 Duke doesn’t hang out, but it takes over 20 long seconds to get from 50 to 100 km / h. With a pillion passenger it does astonishingly bravely in the draft, but the all too narrow back seat with the high footrests can hardly be expected of grown-ups; Even the rider, just over 1.75 meters tall, has a lot of trouble stowing away on the KTM 390 Duke Duke.
Wavy asphalt, the order of the day on Alpine roads, is also not their thing; in the face of leaps and bounds and resounding spring elements, you feel like a vodka martini from James Bond in your saddle, namely, vigorously shaken.
The long journey to the Alps is rather strenuous because of the low level of comfort, and there are hardly any options for storing luggage; KTM itself only offers a tail bag. If the KTM 390 Duke also comes from the Alpine republic of Austria, its preferred terrain is in the city and in the hill country, it is hardly suitable for a fiery summit storm.

The Kawasaki Ninja 300 needs speeds
fact
Not a lot of power, but a lot of fire. The 48 hp bikes also competed against each other at this year’s Alpen Masters.
Just as little as the Kawasaki Ninja 300. The little green one looks a lot, but despite the racing outfit, its engine with measured 39 hp turns out to be weak. She plagues her driver on steep passes, because she always wants to be kept in a good mood, i.e. at speed. 9000 / min should be at least on the clock, and that occasionally degenerates into an ugly switching and rotating horgy. In addition, the Kawaski needs Ninja 300 in high alpine regions even longer than the KTM when accelerating from 50 to 100 km / h, namely 26.5 seconds.
Well-developed, not too steep passes such as the Col de Larche are definitely fun, because there you can swing and run the Kawasaki Ninja 300 harmoniously. It shouldn’t be too bumpy, if you please, because your suspension reserves are quickly exhausted. It doesn’t behave quite as stubbornly as the KTM on bumpy asphalt, but the driver’s intervertebral discs should be in perfect condition. A passenger is much more comfortable than on the KTM, but the 300 engine then comes under even more pressure.
Thanks to good luggage hooks, it is even equipped for the journey to the Alps, but to be honest: If you want to plunge into the tumult of corners with the Kawasaki Ninja 300, you should rather head for a nearby low mountain range, because it seems overwhelmed in the amusement park of the high Alps. It ends up in third place in the test field, just three points ahead of the KTM.
Honda and Yamaha head to head
fact
The scent of freedom and adventure wafts around the four 48 hp bikes in the Alps.
So the Honda win the group CB 500 X and the Yamaha XT 660 R, and at first it looks like a close race. The abbreviation XT alone means that endless dune landscapes and desert oases appear before the inner eye. But wait, we are not in Africa, but in the Maritime Alps, and the XT has to prove its qualities as a mountain goat.
The African flair also catches on here, because the lively throbbing stew reacts spontaneously and vigorously to every turn of the throttle and creates the best acceleration and torque values in the group at an altitude of 2000 meters. The long spring travel of the Yamaha XT 660 R can cope with bumpy roads in the best way, but bring a lot of movement into the load, which has a negative effect on the steering precision and the stability in curves; Because of the large 21-inch front wheel, there is a lack of the last bit of handiness in the range of passes.
The Yamaha XT 660 R is the only one in the test field to dispense with ABS. The brakes have a dull effect, and you have to pull hard when you brake hard, which makes metering difficult. Because the delay is still quite good, the lack of ABS is actually not a knockout criterion, but the XT costs a lot of points; the Honda pulls away from her unreachable. Nevertheless, the long-legged enduro is worth considering, especially for taller riders, especially since the pillion rider is also quite comfortable and there are a variety of travel accessories available in the accessories trade.
The winner of the 48 hp class is called …
BILLION
The power of the 48 hp bikes.
The sole winner, however, is the Honda CB 500 X. The XT only masters poor surfaces better, otherwise the Honda is ahead in every respect. It always has a lot of power ready, shifts more smoothly and clutches more smoothly, is stable in the curve, stays precisely on the line and gives a lot of feedback. The engine runs cultivated, the ABS controls well, and thanks to the extremely moderate consumption, the Honda CB 500 X covers almost 500 kilometers without refueling.
The driver and front passenger sit more comfortably on the Honda CB 500 X than on the XT and are much better protected from wind and weather. The range of accessories includes matching suitcases, well-thought-out luggage hooks provide additional storage space, which is why the journey can also be comfortably managed.
With a lead of almost 50 points, the Honda CB 500 X won the coveted ticket to the grand finale.

The narrow KTM 390 Duke and the sporty Kawasaki Ninja 300 certainly have their qualities, but they are overwhelmed in the high Alps. Yamaha’s XT 660 R scores with singular charm and the feel-good factor, but in the end the CB 500 X wins: Honda has put an impressive all-rounder on its wheels, and at a really small price.
