An Australian Yamaha dealer is upgrading the Yamaha Niken with a turbocharger. Forced ventilation in this way, the three-cylinder tricycle generates 148 hp.
Justin Chisholm runs the Yamaha dealer Trooper Lu’s Garage in New South Wales, Australia. And when there is time in day-to-day work, his team is happy to dedicate itself to special conversions – on a Yamaha basis, of course. The latest creation is one Yamaha Niken with turbocharging.

The heart of the conversion is a Garrett GT25 exhaust gas turbocharger, which can deliver up to 1.6 bar boost pressure and thus inflate the Niken to up to 320 hp. Because Chisholm wanted to leave the engine innards untouched, his team limited itself to a boost pressure of only 0.5 bar. Nevertheless, the output of the 847 cm³ three-cylinder increases from 115 to 148 hp. The exhaust gas turbine was placed inconspicuously under the engine, where the front silencer is usually located. A front spoiler from the Yamaha accessories range also conceals the technology. The new exhaust system is completed by new manifolds and an Akrapovic muffler. A boost display on the handlebar clamp provides information about the current boost pressure. Stronger clutch springs brace themselves against a slipping clutch.
The beige-black special paintwork and various Niken Turbo lettering ensure a certain conspicuousness. The two front forks have also been fitted with air suspension elements, which should facilitate coordination. Additional headlights on the flanks, a small window spoiler on the fairing and a large topcase complete the conversion.
Chisholm does not provide any information on mileage or the cost of construction. With around 150 hp, the Niken should gain significantly in longitudinal dynamics.
