The Japanese GP resembled the GP of Aragón, with a real jump just before the end without giving the competitors a chance to react. Was it this decisive moment for the victory in Japan that drove Dovizioso to the downfall? ?
Marc Marquez : Each race is different and you have to understand it as best as possible to prepare well. As always, we have planned the Japanese GP with Emilio Alzamora, Santi Hernández and Alberto Puig. Together, we try to think about what could happen, but once in the race you have to know how to improvise. This Grand Prix more or less followed the scenario we had hoped for and Dovizioso was very strong in the lead. Finally, I decided to attack. I wanted to try and I also had a little more rhythm. Dovizioso gave everything to try to delay the celebration of this title but, but fortunately we resisted well.
What went through your mind as you came out of turn 10? Could you stay focused ?
This weekend I had already scared myself there but in reality, the dust that came off when I left the track was more spectacular than what I felt on the handlebars. I managed to keep control.
Did you lose your focus when you were told that Dovizioso was out of the race ?
Obviously, I was distracted to see Dovizioso out of the race because it meant that I was world champion. In the first corner, I made a speed error and went into third. Then I managed to pick myself up and complete the last lap, but it was a very long lap.
Has this season been the most successful? Can you still improve your driving ?
It’s one of the most successful seasons so far, since I’ve regularly finished on the podium. The best year in terms of results was 2014, but this season has undoubtedly been very complete since we have done very well. We managed to withstand the tough times and take advantage of the times when we were in good shape.
You have already won seven titles. What are you most waiting for now ?
The moment we wait the most when celebrating a title is when we come back to the pit and see our mechanics. Although it is I who stand on the podium, there are a number of people who are working to make me champion. When we lose we all lose, but if we win, we also win together. Of course you also can’t wait to come home to Cervera and celebrate with your friends and family.
The Motegi Twin Ring, in addition to being Honda’s national circuit, has won you three of your five MotoGP titles.
This is not where I got my best race results, but this is the third time that I have won a title in Japan. Until 2016 I had never won at Motegi, but it seems that the presence of Honda bosses helps us to perform. In addition, being able to celebrate the world championship in Japan is a very important thing for the brand..
You have received congratulations from all over the world from great sportsmen, the Spanish president, the Royal House … What is the message that touched you the most? ?
All the congratulatory messages are special, starting with those that we receive in the paddock just after winning the title from other drivers, famous personalities or famous sportsmen. But without a doubt, the one that always makes me the most excited is my mom’s congratulatory message. She couldn’t come to Japan, but right after the race I made a video call with her.
Mick Doohan, whom you have matched with five premier class titles, says he is proud to share this achievement with you and your riding style is second to none..
I have a great relationship with Mick Doohan, whom I have met on several events. It’s amazing that you can be compared to Doohan, because the first memory I have of motorcycle racing on TV is when he would fight with Álex Criville. I have no words to describe equaling its five titles…
How are you going to face the last three races, now that you have won the title? ?
First of all, it’s time to enjoy this world championship, but I have already been told that there are still two titles at stake: the constructors title and the team title. So we’ll try to work well with my teammate Dani to get these two titles and see if we can celebrate the triple crown..
By traveling a lot you see more of your team than your family … how are they ?
In my team, everyone has their good and bad sides. What makes me the most proud of them is that they spread joy around them. This is the most important thing. After all, it’s a job and we are human. We can all have a bad day for many reasons, whether it’s personal or business, but between us everything always ends with a smile. Thanks to them, the work is much better and more pleasant. If I had to choose each of the people who make up my team, I would say that, for example, the one who eats the most is Carlo Liuzzi. Then, Ginetto is the most punctual – but not because he arrives on time, rather because he leaves early. The latest member of the team is Jordi Castellá or Jose Luis Martínez. We have Santi Hernández and Javi Ortiz, the most responsible. Finally, the most cheeky is Carlos Liñán.
Who is the first person you call when you have a problem ?
It depends on what kind of problem it is: I call either my brother, or my mother, or my father, or Emilio.
What makes you smile after a bad day ?
When I have a bad day, I try to spend time with my brother or with a friend to forget about my troubles. But in reality I have very few bad days because I always try to disconnect by playing sports or by cycling.
With so many races, events and commitments, have you ever traveled as a tourist? New York, London, Rome … where would you go if you had the time ?
Between races and events, the place that I appreciate the most is at home. Sometimes it’s hard to understand and some people ask me “why don’t you go travel to disconnect?”, But I miss my house, my couch, the TV and the chill out time. Even if sometimes it’s nice to look for a place to disconnect.
And finally, knowing that you fear the sea … Would you agree to swim alone in the middle of the Mediterranean in exchange for another title? ?
I would, despite the risks! I would think of something else at the same time but I would go, although I might have to push myself. Of course, no more than five minutes !
