MotoGP German GP – Folger (2nd): "I couldn’t believe it!"
Jonas Folger transcended himself at home to clinch the best result of his young MotoGP career with a brilliantly obtained second place between the official Honda of Marquez and Pedrosa in the German GP. Let it be said: in 2017, an excellent Tech3 pilot can hide another! Statements and Analysis.
Jonas Folger, Yamaha Tech3 (5th in qualifying and 2nd in race): “This is the first time I have been able to stay in this position. I almost fell on the first corner when Petrucci touched me. But after the warm-up I knew I had a good pace. When I was following Marc, I noticed that I was faster in the last partial. I was leading, I could not believe it, at the Sachsenring moreover! At the end of the race, I preferred to let him go because he has more experience than me ".
“Anyway I learned a lot. I was also trying to hold onto my tires so I didn’t know if I was able to follow him to the finish. And then I made a mistake. widening, which lost me more than a second. I tried to catch up, but I almost fell on two or three occasions. It was a rich experience to run alongside Marc and Dani ".

Site analysis: When Herve Poncharal, boss of the Tech3 team below very happy at the finish, announced his decision to bring Jonas Folger up in MotoGP, some observers twitched … Although undoubtedly gifted, the young German rider ( 24 years old on August 13) was not necessarily among the revelations of Moto2 with only one victory and one pole to his list in 2016.
Seventh in the Moto2 World Championship, down one position compared to 2015, Folger is one of those riders who are often at the forefront (5 career victories), but who lack a "little something" to achieve. As in 2013, his best season, which he finished 5th on a Moto3 Kalex-KTM with four podiums to his name but no victory.
And yet, since his arrival in MotoGP, Jonas Folger has made his critics lie, who predicted a difficult year for him in the private M1: tenth of his first race in Qatar then sixth in Argentina, the German rider has remained in the Top 10 all the first part of the season with a 13th place in Italy and a fall in the Netherlands as the worst results! Remarkable performances for a beginner pilot, especially since he also has to deal with the star status granted to his teammate, Johann Zarco.
Far from feeling any complexes in front of the repeated successes of "Zarco-corico" or of erring by excess of zeal by trying to imitate him, Jonas Folger on the contrary concentrated on his own approach of the premier category, impressing his team by his consistency: before his mistake at Assen, the n ° 94 was the only driver to have finished all the races in the points.
On the strength of this convincing trajectory, Jonas Folger came to his national Grand Prix with a knife between his teeth: he thought before the start that he would finish second in front of his home crowd after temporarily leading the race, exactly like Johann Zarco l had done in France? Undoubtedly not: "it was a strange feeling, I expected that Marc will pass me again at each turn", analyzes the one who is nicknamed "Folgas" and that MNC wants to rename "Full gas" !
The German rider owes this exciting competitiveness to his motorcycle on the one hand, the very balanced and powerful M1 2016: obviously, the old model from Yamaha works wonderfully, or even better than the new one, which poses problems for Rossi and Viñales despite the introduction of a new frame! In addition, his choice of tires was well inspired: Jonas Folger started out as medium at the front and at the rear, like Marc Marquez. Conversely, Johann Zarco had for once opted for a rubber harder than most of his rivals (medium front and hard rear).
All this combined with the support of the German public led Jonas Folger to his best result in MotoGP and his first podium since the 2016 Moto2 Malaysian GP. The promising Tech3 rookie also becomes the first German rider to reach the podium at home in premier class for 44 years (!) and third place for Ernst Hiller at the 1973 German GP on his 500cc Koenig, behind Phil Read and Werner Giger.
At the time, the race was contested in Hokenheim and the Germanic had finished 1min37 from Read’s MV Agusta: Folger finished just 3 seconds behind Marc Marquez, after having followed him until the last five laps then slowed down following several hot weather. Herve Poncharal can rejoice: his two novice riders follow each other in the championship in 6th and 7th place, behind five factory riders and in front of several official motorcycles including those of Lorenzo (9th) or Iannone (16th) !
