Root of RSV4 = RS 660
Parallel twin, 659 cm3, 100 hp, 67 Nm, 183 kg, A2 version, APRC pack, 11,050 euros
Sportiness is the emblem of the Aprilia firm, legitimized by dozens of world championship titles. In small and large displacement. Because the Italian brand manages the two extremes brilliantly. This achievement has a name: RS (RennSport). They are first of all small road motorcycles derived from the competition one in which the transalpine brand shone in the early 90s. Derived from the championship AF1 in 1992, the RS Extrema "model, 125 cm version³ was accompanied by a 50 cc before being followed by a 250 variant two years later, with a 2-stroke engine. Many developments will accompany these machines until their successive disappearance due to anti-pollution regulations. However, we will find the 125 equipped with a 4-stroke engine and therefore called RS4 in 2011.
In addition to these small champions, Aprilia also offered in 1998 its large sports cubes based on the Austrian Rotax twin with the RSV 1000 and its Tuono roadster version. These machines will also change, taking on board in 2010, a compact house V4, housed in an unparalleled cycle part and under the control of remarkable electronics, which have now become RSV4 1100 and Tuono V4 1100.
Aprilia RS 660 test
And so ? Between small, somewhat limited nerves and large hyper-scumbags that are difficult to use, there would be no efficient and easy machine? As often, the truth is in the compromise. What if THE way was that of a midsize? May be…. Especially in this segment, few are the contenders. And demand is falling for 1000 hypersports (- 40% in 10 years), because demanding in everything: physical, financial, they are not very compatible with road use and inaccessible to A2 of course. But there is an expectation in the mid-engine segment…. for machines less focused on hyper performance and more on accessible efficiency. Aprilia therefore draws its new sporting muse, logically baptized RS 660. Engine, chassis…. everything is new. Of course, the beautiful is certified Euro 5 while a 95 hp version also allows access to A2 licenses. Last reason for satisfaction, the RS inaugurates a new range! A Tuono roadster and a Tuareg trail should soon accompany the little Italian bomb.
It is in the north of Italy, around Vicenza, that we discover this long-awaited mobile sculpture of medium displacement.
Discovery
Since its inception, the RSV4 model has benefited from a widely acclaimed design, remarkable elegance and sportiness. Available on the 125s, it is therefore logical to find it applied to the new RS 660. However, here it takes on a new force (which we would like to see applied to the 1100 …). Ultra compact, narrow, the novelty combines fluid and elegant lines. Impressive finesse, its sculpted and complex curves seduce with its elegance and overall dynamics..
Although modernized, the family resemblance with the RSV4 is indisputable
The use of full LED lighting greatly modernizes the front panel. Still ribbed, the muzzle is clearly refined, displaying its three lights which are immediately recognizable but now underlined by a luminous rimmel of diurnal elements (DRL). An ambient light sensor regulates the automatic switching on of the headlights and the cornering lights illuminate the bend in a curve.
The sides are a big part of the styling evolution. Reduced, the surfaces of the multilayer fairing testify to an important aerodynamic study and sheath the machine as closely as possible. Higher, the faceted and angular tank embeds 15 liters. It’s not much, but Italy announces 4.9 liters per 100. To be confirmed in real life … A welcoming seat rests on the bottle, extended from the stern with its well-known fins and concludes with a stylish tail light.
The fairing evolves taking into account the aerodynamics
Rigidity and lightness are the key words that presided over the design of the chassis. The machine is based on an aluminum rear loop (2 kg) bolted to the new main perimeter frame with double beams of the same metal. Particularly narrow and aesthetic, this structure is sharply arched at the back, visually acting as a dancer’s corset. Reinforced on the front and the steering column where it receives the forced air intake, the frame is anchored to the engine block (cylinder head and rear casing) with load-bearing function to optimize its rigidity.
Aprilia RS 660
And it’s a whole new mechanic that drives Aprilia! A twin of course, but parallel…. Reasons of weight and general compactness are advanced for this choice. New for the manufacturer of Noale, this compact architecture is derived from the 1,000cc V4, particularly in terms of compactness and bore. Cubant 659 units (81 x 63.9 mm) this twin features two overhead camshafts operating 4 valves per cylinder. It develops 100 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and 67 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm. The breaker can even be pushed back to 11,500 turns! Contrasting values auguring sharp behavior. To be checked…. However, 80% of the torque is available from 4,000 and 90% at 6,250 rpm. And wedged at 270 °, the crank pins provide irregular ignition to give more life and approach a 90 ° V twin operation. A simple balance shaft reduces the vibrations of the block and the distribution is ensured by chain. A central air intake lets the RS breathe through intake ducts of different lengths for each cylinder. The block shares its 48 mm injection bodies and 4 bar injectors with the V4. It blows into a 6 kg exhaust line placed lowest under the machine and remarkably integrated into the sleek aesthetic of the RS 660.
The twin delivers 100 hp and 67 Nm
High-end technology for the Italian princess. Its sparkling mechanics receive control by Ride by Wire accelerator and 5 injection maps (AEM) associated with the many in-house APRC electronic aids and its inertial unit! This controls ATC (traction control), AWC (wheeling control), AEB (engine brake) on 3 axes and 6 directions and regulates ABS in curves. Depending on the driving mode chosen, all these beautiful people regulate themselves accordingly. On a daily basis we will choose "Commute", or, for more fun, "Dynamic" unless you create your "individual" mode. On track, “Challenge” will give you the best pre-tuning of the RS 660 when “Time Attack”, just that…., Lets you control everything..
The electronic core also benefits from a new Marelli 11 MP ECU four times faster than the 7SM it replaces. Finally, ACC (cruise control) and AQS (up and down shifter) are also part of the game associated with an anti-dribble clutch. All this is configurable via new controls on the handlebars and a color TFT screen..
The RS is full of assistance with the entire APRC pack
The mechanics pass their ardor to the ground via a new aluminum swingarm with sculpted surfaces and very attractive paintings. A satin finish would have been more durable without doubt … Banana type and asymmetrical construction, it is connected directly to the twin to increase rigidity there too. Its movements are entrusted to a shock absorber strangely mounted without links, which could affect the progressiveness of its work. We note that for the rest. The element is adjustable only in spring preload and rebound. A bit tight for a machine with first-rate sporting ambitions and a premium image. It’s best on the front end with a fully adjustable 41mm Kayaba upside-down fork. The travel are 120 and 130 mm. And the geometry admits odds looking after the agility. The column angle is 24.1 °, the trail is 104.6 mm and the wheelbase is 1,370 units. Enough to spin with ease on the asphalt ….
The asymmetric swingarm is made of aluminum
Well, you also have to be able to stop. No worries with 320mm front rotors bitten by Brembo 4 piston opposed calipers and radial mount. Same treatment for their master cylinder. The retarder opposed to two pistons grips a freight of 220 mm. The hoses are made of braided metal and the indicators are triggered automatically in the event of emergency braking. Under the control of multi-axis modulated ABS…. how can we still miss braking …. ?
The whole thing stops light rims (3.56 and 5.38 kg) of 17 inches in aluminum alloy shod with Pirelli Rosso Corsa II in 120/70 and 180/55 or 180/60 according to preferences.
The aluminum rims are fitted with Pirelli Rosso Corsa II
True to its high-performance model genetics, the Aprilia RS 660 displays attractive plastic and quality finishes. However, certain plastic parts seem less flattering and the painted swingarm will quickly lose its shine at the level of the heels of boots wearing out its paint…. Adjustment of the elements and quality of the components ensure a correct standing, wires and hoses are ideally integrated. Note that the Aprilia RS 660 is available in three color variants including a purple / red which pays homage to the RS 250 of 1994. Last point of importance, the Italian is a ballerina, ready to lead the dance, of only 183 kilos…
In the saddle
The transalpine sylph will not require you to spike to accompany it. Admitting only 820 mm of saddle height, it is accessible, even if the pilot of 1.70m will put just the tips of the feet.
On board, the atmosphere is dynamic, sporty even, but without excess. If the inclination of the saddle tilts the torso noticeably forward, the half-handlebars reflect a more road-going philosophy. Placed at the level of the upper crown, they are quite open and give an intermediate position between roadster and sports car. What underlines the flexion without excess of the legs. The position is reminiscent of the sportivo-GTs of the 2000s, such as the Honda VFR and BMW R1100S … This particular ergonomics is coupled with a welcoming seat offering good recoil. We also note the marked shoulders of the tank reminiscent of those of the RSV4 and guarantees excellent support in swaying position…
With only 820mm of seat height, the RS is easily accessible
Under the eyes, the openwork aluminum triple clamp, structured and cut in the mass, has its effect. Less exuberant, the settings of the fork tubes could be more emphasized. The interior of the cockpit could be more attractive by dressing the interior of the fairings.
Finally, the cable clutch lever is not adjustable in gauge and the stems should be backlit now. Pity.
Noale’s sportswoman receives a 5-inch TFT computer
Technological trend and APRC oblige, the instruments are grouped together in a beautifully crafted 5-inch TFT screen. Despite its compactness, it turns out to be quite complete and its ergonomics are excellent. Topped with a large shiftlight, the panel automatically switches to day or night mode and has two different displays, road or circuit. The first displays a bargraph tachometer covering the tachometer. Higher engine and fuel temperature gauge alongside the engaged piloting mode. To customize these, a button on the right allows you, when stopped, to configure the machine. Below, the information to scroll through the handlebars via the multi-directional pad: odometer, instantaneous consumption, average, duration of the trip, 2 partial…. There is also an outside temperature and a clock. With the circuit display, the provision of information gives pride of place to sport. It thus groups together, under the highly readable bar-graph tachometer, the stopwatch or speed display. And the cruise control button then controls traction control at all times. Well seen ! Moreover, this small lever required a cutout in the screen holder to pass…
In the city
The awakening of a new engine block is always a subtle emotion. The twin will it be at the level of the usual sound of Noale. YES ! And not just a little. You don’t find a twin parallel to mimicry so close to a 90 ° V every day. It stands out for its flexibility. Because this architecture generally offers appreciable availability. For now, we are delighted with the ample and lively snoring of the Italian.
The RS 660 adapts very well to the city in its Commute mode
The 660 Aprilia proves to be docile in built-up areas, even accepting the 5 legal. While Commute mode is ideal, Dynamic mode emphasizes more jerks on go-around. Without being painful, they are sensitive. Precise, the clutch and the quickshifter contribute to the overall ease of handling and are coupled with a precise selection.
Good point, the mirrors return a clear and wide image. Finally, the turning radius is correct, but requires moving the wrists away from the marked angles of the tank. In short, good manners, but also a clear tendency to want to quickly rush into urban stretchers. To avoid neurasthenia, take air.
Motorway and expressways
The gears shoot at the shifter and you’re out of acceptable range in no time. All in a hum of mini V4…. What health, what charm! A motorcycle in the wind and you with it. Because its ultra compact screen has more the advantage of reducing the pressure on the wrists than of sheltering you. An optional high model, in addition to a better defection, will also bring you an appreciable road-racing style..
The RS turns quietly at 5,750 laps on the last gear to the legal maximum on the motorway
In legal terms, the sporty twin demonstrates a natural stride set at 5,750 laps on the last report and ready to start a sprint. Only appreciable dynamic and lively vibrations inhabit the machine. Regulator engaged, one can thus dawdle on a regulated track while preparing his choreography to come…. The dance floor is announced at the next exit, prepare your entrance.
Departmental
The overall homogeneity of the RS 660 is its strength, but it is above all its mechanics that we remember in the first place. The length of the twin is astonishing, offering seductive mechano-lyrical soaring. Because the soundtrack is as remarkable as the mechanical operation. The beauty accompanies each frank acceleration with a deep rumble of her airbox, then pulling towards more pronounced metallic trills. Without a doubt, the sound has been extensively worked for an intense and captivating listening pleasure..
Volunteer on the intermediates from 4,000 laps, the verve of the block then only increases to sublimate around 8,000 laps. That is, at the crossroads of its torque and power curves. And the mechanics then race to the red zone, over 11,000 rpm. Admittedly, its torque of 67 Nm may seem a bit tight but two elements change the situation. First of all, the reduced weight which gives the RS excellent dynamics but also, more subjective, the personality of the Noale twin. Its pulsations at low revs and a subtle roughness reinforce its very real sportiness. Its admission to conduits of unequal length is one of the keys to this strong character. Also, the rapid and precise selection and the ideal gearbox spacing greatly contribute to steering efficiency and allow full mechanical potential to be exploited. Add to that 100 healthy horses galloping badly and you have in your hands an athlete as captivating as hyper reactive.
Aprilia is very homogeneous and is excellent on the road
In the tight shell we appreciate the lightness of the machine while imagining the future Tuono 660…. The RS bracelets are less comfortable, but the machine handles easily. In second gear, the pins come out straight and the engine power is reinforced very quickly with each graduation of the tachometer. And the grip of its Pirelli encourages you to hit the rubber. Suffice to say that the front wheel often plays the daughters of the air. In her semi-aerial ballet, Aprilia moves from angle to angle with rare obviousness. Its front end may be a little less precise than that of its big sister RSV4, but its ease in small corners is superior..
Cheers, the RS easily connects twisty turns
When the track opens up a bit, it’s the stiffness of the chassis that you savor and the flawless placement of the machine in its path. On the corner, the RS 660 is susceptible to bad connections and its lively steering gear could have been supplemented with the reassuring services of a steering cylinder. Nothing alarming, but let’s remain vigilant. Because it is less the fork than the shock absorber which is more to blame. Its direct mounting on the arm reduces its progressiveness and makes it run fairly dry. Too bad, especially as its adjustment possibilities are reduced and the fork more efficient.
Very rigid when you go up the pace, the cycle part still has some weaknesses
This does not prevent too much from maintaining the pace. Besides, you have to take the brakes there! No surprise, the little Italian can count on her front calipers under electronic control. Only the implementation on the angle significantly straightens the machine. It will be accompanied by the rear element, a little too shy for my taste and quickly inclined to trigger ABS. Agile, the RS allows full control on its handlebars in turns and allows a healthy and easy piloting. In short, you will understand, the RS 660 is as easy to handle (for many bikers) as putting on a surgical mask. With some exceptions because it’s too complicated.
Part-cycle
Incisive, precise and rigid, the chassis of the 660 encourages committed piloting. Its suspensions could be more qualitative. Agile, the RS is a formidable adversary in the winding and its geometry gives it an intuitive character..
The 660 is very agile, but the shock absorber lacks progressiveness
Braking
The front calipers bite the discs effectively but leave perfect control. Ideal for keeping pace without getting scared. The rear element seems more sluggish. Too bad, it is nevertheless very practical in bends. ABS is only used wisely and transparent electronics in use.
Brembo stirrups ensure a perfect bite
Comfort / Duo
Sporty light weight, the RS has a comfortable saddle and a rather welcoming ergonomics. The whole remains however dedicated to dynamism. And preferably for solitary pleasure, given the small size of the rear mini-seat.
The seat is rather comfortable for a sportswoman
Consumption
Aprilia announces an average consumption of 4.9 l / 100 km, or a potential range of more than 300 km given the 15 liters of fuel that the tank carries. Unfortunately, we were unable to measure the exact consumption during this test..
Aprilia announces a consumption of 4.9 l / 100 km
The test of the Aprilia RS 660 in video
Conclusion
The length of the wait to discover this model was equal to the satisfaction of trying this Aprilia RS 660. Evoking in many ways its big sister RSV4, its unique heart makes its pilot vibrate to the rhythm of its rapid pulsations. Its cycle part in house sporting standards and associated electronics make up a formidably efficient set. The suspensions leave me a little bit hungry and I would like to be able to study them for longer on rough roads and on the track. More careful equipment would not have been out of place on this machine and favored the handling.
Accessible to many bikers, both in terms of ergonomics and performance, the RS 660 has few competitors. We can easily imagine the Yamaha R6, with superlative suspensions, higher power (118 hp) and the price to match: € 13,999…. Very distinctive, it does not offer the versatility of Aprilia. The same goes for the Kawasaki ZX-6R, although more affordable: € 11,699. In the end, it is a roadster that I will oppose to the Italian, the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS, € 12,100. More powerful and torquey, the English can boast top-of-the-range finish and equipment. For 2,500 euros more than the Aprilia, the Ducati SuperSport offers a similar positioning for more advanced performance.
In its segment, the Aprilia RS is therefore an outsider at a price that is rather well positioned, but expensive in absolute terms: € 11,050. An advantage that the Italian should take advantage of. This is all the more true as the RS is the only one among the aforementioned machines that can be clamped for the A2 license. Successful missing link between two sporting worlds, the RS 660 deserves its nickname of small RSV4. She has all the qualities, race genetics and the same fiery Latin character..

"Buell is not a failure"
As the other one would say, "it is not a failure, I would say it did not work"
The Buell brand is indeed a failure, otherwise it would still exist. But we’re getting away from the topic, right?
She has a shark nose look in mini like other models at Harley
"Disadvantage: No central stand as standard"
We are in the lair of the ‘old’ bikers ?
Well simple, 2009 is just after the subprime crisis and HD had to drop ballast.
In real life or for dogma, we ignore that.
But in HD dealerships, Buell customers had a hard time, we have to admit.
Buell had already shaken up the Harley universe.
16,000 euros for the ugliest motorcycle of the moment … The look reminds me of the 250 MZ of yesteryear, especially in orange! Well, the test is fair and the engine is very good, let’s hope for a road version not too heavy with the same mill in 150 HP, that would change at H D …
Finally a Harley whose cycle part allows you to have fun in the bends. As for the somewhat particular aesthetic, so much the better for bikers whose main concern is not narcissistic and who can afford it at a good price on occasion..
Hoping that reliability follows.
A chassis and an engine that seem very well designed but unfortunately a front end too cleaving, it is not this that will make me drop my multistrada. Too bad, the rest of the machine is quite nice.
This is not the vision I have of the brand and I find this front very ugly!
That’s what I thought.
I have friends who roll in modern HD (the names have long escaped me), but this stuff really doesn’t make me want.
The equivalent of a Triumph Thruxton, it would.
For someone not interested in the HD world like me (I’m not talking about folklore but about philosophy and technique), only the Bronx would have tickled a piece of my cortex.
HD, MV, Ducati, Triumph, the bike is there to give pleasure to its owner and if the owner is happy with it, I do not see where the problem is. For some aesthetics is important, for others it is less divisive. To put forward a certain folklore, I don’t mind, in this case I cross Rossi clones with 46 on all floors, I don’t walk around with a Kawa or Yamaha jacket all the time in the street.
In 2019 the dealership in my region sold 250 motorcycles, that’s 250 guys and girls who didn’t understand the Harley philosophy.
I read comments from bikers who have a priori without ever having put their buttocks on a Harley.
Know that we do not proselytize, some will be seduced by this model, others not, maybe a friend of yours.
+1 with fift: what are the passenger footrests for
With this "detail" near, it is a very beautiful machine
"the Harley philosophy." LET ME LAUGH, it’s always been about selling *** as expensive as possible and that’s it !!!
Among the strong points, a strong aesthetic. Strong, OK but very beautiful or very ugly? Well, it depends on disgust, oh sorry, on tastes but personally I’m a fan …
Yes, there is a passenger option, but seeing as the aileron element was attached … better to ride solo… ))
No !?
That said, it must be!
Isn’t there a contradiction …?
It’s true, all sewers are in nature … Whoever wants to ride on a trash can and not on the most beautiful, it is his right…
I can’t wait to see one to explode with laughter! ..
a real gem for long and short walks, I ride with a 2015 road glide and I have just returned from a trip in Corsica in a duo with practically only the departmental 5500 km of pleasure in 3 weeks so I confirm a very good article !!!!
> (Harley remains shy about the numbers, but let’s say it went from around 80 to 90 horsepower)
If the power is not in the press kit, it is on the gray card, field P2.
No sir, there are only two! The TRX and the SS / SSie.
At the limit the VTR F for its "comfort" on the road and the potato of its engine. But she is ugly.
The rest, boaf, the ZX9R is because Kawasaki was too timid to release a 900CBR-like (and it has two cylinders too many), the SV1000 and 650 existed as a roadster so we squirt that out, hop!
Worse, it shouldn’t be too powerful, a road sports car, so the 1000 TLS and TLR, outside too, too many horses.
Same for the Falco, too powerful (and still I like it).
Suddenly, there are not masses left like I said.
Remains the anecdotal MZ1000 (also ugly and existed as a roadster), the Laverda 650/750 (not very pleasant pieces of wood), the Voxan CafeRacer (ok, but it is apart from that it is beautiful), and if we are wide the Triumph Sprint RS 955.
We also forget things like 1000 Thunderace and 600 Thundercat, there are too many cylinders and even notice that for the ZX9R. Not road sportswomen, just timid sportswomen.
No, there are really only of them, pure "road" sports.
One because the Italians know how to make motorcycles, the other because Yamaha had the excellent idea of making it by taking inspiration from the other.
What, what bad faith?
Where? Which?
Well actually since the TRX is a copy of the SSie, there was only one, the Ducati. With the 1000DS, the best engine in the world .
More seriously, there is only one thing missing from this Aprilia to bring the genre back to life perfectly: a passenger seat.
"Very stylish look" … years 39-45 ??
