By presenting its RSV4, Aprilia knew very well that it was launching a great machine on the market. But the pilots, the amateurs, and even the common bikers did not yet realize the impact that was going to occur. The thrill already existed just at the mention of V4. The first to put the wheels on the track was the Factory version. And the fantasy has arrived. On the one hand because the technical argumentation, the top-level performances and the aura of Superbike honored Noale’s new sportswoman without artifice, on the other hand because the entry ticket instantly calmed down. At 20,000 euros the pistarde, we hesitate to tear an arm or an eye.
Fortunately, at Aprilia, there are always 2 versions on the RSVs. Once is not customary, it is the Factory that was marketed first. And for 2010 (even a little earlier), here is the standard version says R. A letter that changes everything? Not necessarily. Just the symbol that blows up some noble elements present on the machine to make it more financially accessible. The RSV4 R drops below 15,000 roros, or more than 5,000 € in savings. This is the introductory price, but even afterwards, the price displayed should prove to be damn interesting given the efficiency and technique of the machine..
So, what changes to arrive at this less toxic price!?! Well, let’s start with the suspensions. The Ohlins elements are replaced by a Showa inverted fork and Sachs shock absorber. The pilot will lose a little in feeling and in precision … on condition that he is already a very good tracker. Factory carbon fairings are replaced by conventional ABS parts. There, you get most of the price difference and the explanation of the weight gain of the machine. 5 kgs separate the R from the Factory. Let’s finish pulling out the tooth: the wheels are made of cast aluminum and no longer forged, the steering damper is no longer Ohlins but Sachs, the intake system is no longer variable, the eccentric of the steering column has disappeared, the front brake discs swap stainless steel for steel, and it is no longer possible to change the mounting height of the swingarm, or the position of the engine in the chassis.
Now let’s come to the best. The RSV4 R also advances the strong arguments that will captivate you as much as the Factory. First this hyper compact template, then this powerful look, and especially its noble and furious V4. We feared that this boiler would give us less in the R version, just to mark the difference between the 2 sisters. What a slab! The V4 retains most of its magic: incredible finesse, ride-by-wire gas control, 3-mode maps, double injectors per cylinder, and all the cavalry present, ie 180 horsepower. However, although the variable height intake vents are reserved for the Factory, the RSV4-R also gives the choice between 3 injection maps: the ROAD mode to have fun without being overwhelmed, SPORT to align pendulums on the track, TRACK to free the beast and end up with a rabid lion between his legs – large technical background strongly recommended.
The RSV4 R arrives at the right time to wash away the competition already badly damaged by the Factory. With a price aligned with the 1000 Japanese, the V4 and the efficiency of the Italian will flank a lot of sweats at the hypersports of the rising sun.
