Fatty or fat-free?

Looking good is not everything. But for some contemporaries it is. And so there has been a certain war of faith in chain lubrication for many years. The more pragmatic, i.e. technology-oriented, fraction has so far used greasy sprays. Rims and swingarms full of piggybacks due to thrown off lubricant? Disgusting lumps of fat that, if carelessly cared for, develop into permanent mess behind the sprocket cover and sprocket? The fat faction doesn’t care; Because good lubricity, the best possible corrosion protection, the longest possible maintenance intervals and proper visibility when spraying were the top priority for the Fetties. The last MOTORRAD chain spray test in 2010 confirmed that they were pretty much on the right track: fat was clearly ahead, fat-free didn’t stand a chance.

The lubrication performance of the samples is determined on the cross-cylinder tester (XCT) of the Competence Center Tribology Mannheim.

And yet some chain aesthetes continued to swear “dry” Chain sprays, new German “Dry Lube”. They weren’t in the mood for excessive cleaning, wanted their possibly colored motorcycle chain to shine permanently in bright colors, drove little and certainly not in the rain and had no problem with significantly shorter maintenance intervals of around 500 kilometers instead of 800 to 1,000 Kilometre. The aesthetes group slowly grew bigger and bigger, the market demanded more Dry Lube products. And so the top dogs in the care products – Louis and Polo with their own brands Procycle and Racing Dynamic as well as Dr. Wack with the S100 series – in addition to their fatty chain sprays, Dry-Lube products are also in the range. Obviously, they have little to do with the technically lagging products from ten years ago. How come? On the one hand, a lot has happened in terms of raw material supply. On the other hand, many chemists have probably invested a lot of brainpower to develop new recipes that manage to bring the sometimes conflicting requirements under one roof – market pressure made it possible. Especially in terms of lubrication performance, and especially in terms of wear protection, the Dry-Lube chain sprays have made a huge leap forward and in some cases even overtaken their greasy competitors. That was almost unthinkable a decade ago.

Karcher laboratory manager and chemist Frank Ritscher during the material compatibility test.

But even the cleverest white coats cannot do magic. Attentive table readers will see this, for example, at the checkpoint “Material compatibility”. In order to stabilize the composition of particularly well-lubricating Dry Lube chain sprays, some formulations do not contain any “classic” Hydrocarbons are used as a solvent matrix. An alternatively selected polar solvent base helps the agent to achieve the above-mentioned top lubricity performance, but unfortunately it is not compatible with ABS plastic. Theoretically (and in laboratory tests) this can lead to stress cracks. In practice, however, there is the all-clear: Unpainted ABS is practically non-existent on the motorcycle, as the plastic is in “Raw state” is not UV stable. This fact shows, however, an example of where the challenges lie for chain spray developers. For the customer, things are a bit simpler: if you want the technically best test participant, you can still go for the fat test winner. But if you are into Dry Lube, you will too “very good” served.

Care tips

Do you like painting rust and wallpapering dust? No problem, then you don’t have to worry about chain cleaning any further. So continue to diligently paste chain spray onto the already existing dirt crust. The lubricant then has little chance of getting to where it is needed; and dirt is also a very unsuitable primer, but after all, someone has to ensure that chain set manufacturers generate flourishing sales. Tech-savvy skimmers prefer a slightly different care technique. And that begins with chain cleaning, a task that has to be carried out every 3,000 to 5,000 kilometers at the latest, depending on the operating conditions. If possible, no chemical club, such as brake cleaner, should be used, because some O- or X-rings have an allergic reaction to this: They swell up, possibly become brittle, and this runs counter to their sealing function. So it’s better to use chain cleaner. Almost all chain spray providers have such in their program for very manageable money.

All 13 products in rank and file.

When cleaning, please also take a look under the sprocket cover and behind the sprocket, because this is where dirt particularly likes to collect, and in connection with (fatty) chain spray, impressive lumps of used grease form there. who of “fat” on “dry” If you want to change, you should take the subject of cleaning very seriously. Only a chain that has been completely degreased and cleaned can ensure that the DryLube products can really show their strengths. The actual lubrication is about finding the right spots: The chain spray mainly belongs on the inside of the chain, i.e. on the part that is directly facing the pinion and sprocket. It should be two runs when spraying. The outside can then be given a rather superficial spray round at the end, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Much more important: do not drive off immediately; because the chain spray should flash off for at least 30 minutes. Otherwise there is a risk of being thrown off prematurely. A little tip for particularly meticulous cleaners: please “S100 Clean Sepp” google – a great little helper to avoid messes.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

The test samples were obtained according to the well-known pattern: MOTORRAD bought all chain sprays in the autumn of 2019 on the free market. And also at the first test station, the test team was able to fall back on a tried and tested constant: the research and development laboratory of Alfred Karcher SE & Co. KG in Winnenden (one of the most famous cleaning equipment manufacturers). Karcher laboratory manager and motorcyclist Frank Ritscher tested the test samples there. intensively on material compatibility (unpainted ABS) and soiling behavior. Then it went from Baden-Wurttemberg to Bavaria, more precisely to the laboratory of Dr. O. K. Wack Chemie GmbH in Ingolstadt.

KuS test engineer and expert Thomas Schuster during an application test.

Test engineer Thomas Schuster from the renowned testing organization KuS (motor vehicle monitoring organization freelance motor vehicle expert) ensured that all five tests carried out (throwing off behavior, soiling II, corrosion protection, creep ability and application) were absolutely neutral and reproducible. For the last test – and by far the most important in terms of points – the MOTORRAD team then traveled to the north of Ba-Wu, to Mannheim. When it comes to tribology (friction theory), the Tribology Competence Center affiliated with the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences is the first address when it comes to analyzes and testing technology for all aspects of lubrication. Not least because the Mannheim scientists have a test device at their disposal with the cross-cylinder tester (XCT) they developed themselves, which provides excellent services for the investigation of friction and wear processes and enables extensive test statements.

Lubrication performance

13 chain sprays (2020) in a comparison test

Klaus Herder.

Lubricating performance: XCT (cross cylinder tester).

Triple evaluation: The XCT (cross cylinder tester) determines three values: the wear surface on a test specimen, the temperature increase on the test specimen during the test run and the coefficient of friction (the lower the better). For the test, the fixed test specimen is pressed for 30 seconds with a load of 400 N onto a metal ring (diameter 35 mm) rotating at 686 rpm. This metal ring is wetted evenly with chain spray beforehand, which then has ten minutes to dry. The chain spray creates a gap between the metal ring and the test body “Lubricating film”, which protects more or less well against wear. The 40 maximum points are made up as follows: 30/5/5 (wear / temperature / coefficient of friction).

Throwing behavior

13 chain sprays (2020) in a comparison test

Klaus Herder.

Throwing-off behavior: The chain spray is sprayed onto an aluminum disc.

It’s all going on here: The chain spray to be tested is sprayed onto an aluminum disc (0 12 cm) and spread evenly and thinly with a squeegee. After flashing off (1 hour), the disc is clamped with a steel shaft in an overhead stirrer. The disk rotates at 1,650 rpm for 15 minutes. The disc is weighed three times (cleaned; sprayed and ventilated; after “sling”). With these three values, the amount of product thrown off can be calculated in percent. The average value is determined from two test runs. In nine of 13 candidates, no thrown chain spray was measurable – full points!

Soiling

13 chain sprays (2020) in a comparison test

Klaus Herder.

Soiling: The chain sprays are sprayed onto test panels.

Now it’s getting dirty: The chain sprays are sprayed onto test panels (sheet steel DC04 B) and have one hour to ventilate. Then the sheets are immersed in quartz sand without pressure, which is located in a beaker that is in turn on a scale. After the sheets have been lifted up, the weight loss of the sand cup gives the mass of the quartz sand adhering to the sheets. The average value is determined from two test runs. At this checkpoint, the Dry-Lube products in particular can show their strengths; With the Racing Dynamic product, almost nothing sticks.

Creep ability

Klaus Herder.

The creeping ability is determined with two glass plates lying one on top of the other.

They want in: Two glass plates are on top of each other. The lower plate is a little longer. The chain spray is sprayed on along the overlapping edge and then has 15 minutes to crawl between the glass plates. Then the wetted area between the glass plates is marked with a felt pen. Millimeter paper is then placed flush on the top plate and the translucent marking is traced. The marked paper area is then cut out, weighed and then calculated in terms of area. Everything over 300 cm² of wetted area is top and therefore gives full points.

The chain sprays are sprayed onto test panels to determine the corrosion protection.

Fills the glasses: The chain sprays are sprayed onto test panels (sheet steel DC04 B) and have one hour to flash off. The trays then end up in a beaker with a five percent sodium chloride solution. The jars are placed on a magnetic stirrer for 24 hours. The test panels are then removed and the corroded surfaces are assessed visually. This gives the proportion of corroded areas in relation to the total area wetted with the sodium chloride solution. The average value is determined from two test runs. Unsurprisingly, dry-lube products in particular show weaknesses in this test.

The final score. A total of three products got the rating “Very well” earned.

Conclusion

Fat gone? Why not, because there are two representatives of the Dry Lube faction on the podium. The dry lubricants have increased particularly in terms of lubricating performance. Anyone who is not out and about in the rain too often and does not attach great importance to above-average corrosion protection can now resort to the tested Dry-Lube products without hesitation. The clear test winner is the S100 White Chain Spray 2.0 “greasier” Classic – more is hardly possible at the moment in terms of lubrication performance. But the same applies to the rest of the test field: Provided that it is handled correctly, a motorcycle chain can be properly maintained with all candidates.
