13 neck and face protectors put to the test
Protection against wind and weather

Neck ruffs and multi-scarfs are super talents, protect against wind, weather, sunburn, insects and are also suitable for any occasion away from the motorcycle. Well, for almost everyone. 13 candidates had to prove themselves in the comparison test.

Thorsten Dentges

10/13/2016

We tested the effectiveness of neck and face guards in motorcycle practice and went on tour with 13 neck ruffs, masks and multi-scarves. They differ conceptually, which is why the question of comparability is entirely justified. But regardless of the strengths and design of the respective product: It can only work if you always have it to hand and wear it. We were therefore looking for the optimal, compact all-rounder that is always on hand. One that can be stowed well in a station wagon, in a tank bag or under the seat and that offers the broadest possible range of protection.

The search for the best super talent is mean. After all, face protection with thick fleece can score points in winter, but in midsummer you get sweaty hell on your neck. If you are clever, you can combine an airy scarf (e.g. Difi, Held) with a fat frill (e.g. Vanucci, Reusch) and thus get very good all-round protection. But you have to buy two parts and sometimes take them with you on tour. At most a satisfactory solution. Real all-rounders like those from Buff and H.A.D. on the other hand, they can be stowed compactly, offer good weather protection, air conditioning in the heat and are also extremely comfortable to carry. This actual multi-function deserves good to very good ratings. Unfortunately, the rather bulky parts of Restless show that expensive is not always good.

Sits, fits, wobbles and has air? Try-ons and trips are part of the test program

In the spring, the 13 ruffs, masks and multi-scarfs went on a trip to the south of France and were compared with each other there. They should also continue to prove their worth throughout the rest of the season. The first checkpoint: the equipment. How extensively are the products equipped with special materials such as windbreaking membranes and fixations, ventilation, etc.? Is the equipment also useful in driving practice? The processing and quality of the fabrics are also crucial. Some textiles form knotted fluff, also known as pilling, after a short period of wear. That is unattractive and doesn’t exactly show the durability of the product, which as a frequent driver you sometimes use almost every day. Also bad: if the protector quickly loses its shape.

A permanently good fit has a decisive influence on comfort. If it rubs and squeezes somewhere, it is particularly annoying on very sensitive neck and face areas. Successful proportions, i.e. a very close-fitting cut, are a prerequisite for a good fit. The fit was checked by various testers with selected different neck and head shapes. If a part only sits moderately, this also has a direct impact on weather protection and air conditioning. Because what you definitely don’t need is when the airstream whistles past the cloth. Or if you can hardly breathe through a material that is too tight and dense without ventilation holes. There were extra points for light rain gear (impregnation). Also important: the handling. Is it easy to put on and take off, and how compactly can the textile part be stowed? The overall grade resulted from all test criteria.

Every season has its requirements

What is the usual season for a motorcyclist like? In the spring, with the sunshine stimulating the first few trips, it can get cold on the moped in the morning and evening hours. During country road tours, the so-called wind chill effect quickly cools the neck down to zero degrees. Windproof membranes and slightly warming material such as fleece or wool are then an advantage. In the summer with increased insect flight, multi-cloths protect the neck and face from impacts by flying cattle and in the worst case even from bites. The textile should, however, allow proper ventilation. If you as a driver feel sweaty and cramped, this has a negative effect on concentration while driving and thus also on active safety.

In autumn, the driver often gets into rain showers. Depending on the material, frills, bibs and towels warm a lot even when it is wet. In this way you avoid sore throats and colds, which you sometimes like to catch on a motorcycle ride that is just a few kilometers away. The carotid artery and the jugular vein run just below the surface of the skin on the neck. Similar to an oil cooler on a motorcycle, an extremely large amount of heat is dissipated there by the wind. For the few intrepid winter riders, fluffy thermal frills are recommended. However, in view of our all-rounder comparison presented here, these would probably be considered unsuitable.
