Here again the complete final evaluation.
Klaus Herder
20/26
Totally legal: license plate windows are, strictly speaking, compulsory in public traffic areas.
Klaus Herder
21/26
Fairly safe: metal or plastic eyelets or textile-reinforced openings enable tarpaulin theft protection.
Klaus Herder
22/26
A bit small: mini-eyelets for tensioning are nice, straps are better.
Klaus Herder
23/26
Too hot: the Louis Syk tarpaulin weakens at 90 degrees.
Klaus Herder
24/26
The competitor product from Polo (outdoor tarpaulin red / black) begins to falter at 220 degrees.
Klaus Herder
25/26
Absolutely complete: Oxford Rainex, among others. with front sewing and lock pocket.

26/26
Hot blower: The endangered area is heated up vigorously at up to 250 degrees.

17 motorcycle tarpaulins in the product test
Indoor and outdoor covers in comparison
Winter is just around the corner and possibly the motorcycle too. So that it doesn’t remain unprotected, we tested 17 motorcycle tarpaulins – 12 outdoor tarpaulins and five indoor protective covers.
Klaus Herder,
Klaus Herder
December 09, 2019
In addition to twelve tarpaulins for the outside area, this product test also deals with five well-known representatives of the interior security business, vulgo “Indoor cover”. Before the lantern parker or garage wintering enthusiast gets into a shopping frenzy, however, they should be clear about what the specific use might look like. In contrast to articles in the clothing sector, the weather and dust protection goods are usually shipped over the counter or online in their original packaging and without being tried on. Specifically, the aim is to answer the following questions in advance: Where is the motorcycle – sheltered from the wind or rather drafty? Second question: Do bad boys or just curious boys have access, or can nobody get hold of it? Next question: What kind of tarpaulin does my motorcycle need? Once these questions have been answered, there are several options to choose from. We start with the outdoor tarpaulins, which are particularly suitable for outdoor use.

So was tested
Up and down again and again: An Indian woman had to put up with being dressed and undressed several times. And that wasn’t all when it came to test stress.
The MOTORRAD endurance test machine Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 served as the basis for the practical test, for which indoor and outdoor covers of their choice were ordered from the suppliers. The size and weight information are MOTORCYCLE measurements and sometimes differ from the information in the brochure. The main checkpoint was that “Practicality”, In the case of the outdoor tarpaulin, in addition to the equipment, watertightness, accuracy of fit, security options and a tendency to flutter, above all the heat resistance. The particularly endangered lower tarpaulin area was hit with a heat gun and infrared thermometer.
Klaus Herder
Hot blower: The endangered area is heated up vigorously at up to 250 degrees.
If the provider did not provide information on heat resistance, the testers left it at a maximum of 150 degrees, which is sufficient if it is only used halfway. If the temperature information was available, this was also checked. However, the test was always canceled if there were first visible changes and permanent damage to the material structure at lower temperatures. At the checkpoint “handling” The main thing was how easy it was to get the cover over and off the motorcycle. When assessing the “Build quality” The focus was particularly on the seams, their sealing and the tear resistance of the upper material. The evaluation point “Price-performance ratio” served as a corrective.
Tips for using tarpaulin
Before you bring the motorcycle under the hood, please ensure that the conditions are clean. At least the tank, side cover, mudguards and windshield should be free of dirt. Otherwise, the inside of the tarpaulin, flapping in the wind, looks like sandpaper. Keyword flutter: don’t buy too big, the more it flutters, the more it rubs. And in winter a tarpaulin always tears and breaks exactly where it can diligently move. Make sure there is a distance: a clearance of at least five centimeters from the floor increases the chance of air exchange and counteracts the formation of condensation. Don’t trust flowery promises like that “Breathability”. Better: on dry, windy days, put down the tarpaulin and let everything dry off nicely.
Klaus Herder
Fairly safe: metal or plastic eyelets or textile-reinforced openings enable tarpaulin theft protection.
So that there are no excessive temperature fluctuations (and thus little condensation), do not park in the sun, but rather in the permanent shade. But not in windward direction (nautical for the side facing the wind), because a covered motorcycle has the Cw value of a cupboard wall, but tips over faster in strong winds. Freshly painted parts have no place under the tarpaulin, because solvents can still evaporate for up to six months and damage the tarpaulin as well as the motorcycle. Chemicals sprayed on have no place under the hood, because preservation sprays can form an intimate bond with the tarpaulin that the owner will hardly like. Very important: The temperatures specified in the data boxes in terms of heat resistance refer to the area of the exhaust silencer (i.e. the lower part of the tarpaulin). In the upper part, less heat-resistant materials can be used – and there the manifold can be up to 800 (!) Degrees hot in extreme cases. Therefore: NEVER cover a motorcycle that has not cooled down completely!
MOTORCYCLE.
Final evaluation: This is how the individual test candidates performed.
Conclusion
The outdoor tarpaulins are clearly divided into three parts: the two very similar first-placed winners achieved the test result “very good” and sit down clearly from the broad, with “Good” judged midfield. In said “Good”-Group is very close. The buyer is guaranteed not to go wrong here and should filter out the points that are relevant to him in the data boxes. At the end of the outdoor test field, there are three “satisfying” assessed tarpaulins: two somewhat fluttering and as year-round models rather less suitable lightweights that as “To plan a journey” but are quite good. And actually a neatly made equipment miracle, which the handling makes a small dash in the bill. The indoor models are much more closed: five candidates, all of which with only relatively minor differences are ideally suited for leaving godfather dust out.
