25,000 kilometers with the Piaggio Beverly 250 GT
Roller in the endurance test
When choosing an Italian vehicle, a lot of emotion and passion often play a role, i.e. enthusiasm and passion. That applies to a Ducati, Benelli or Guzzi. But with a scooter? To find out whether a good means of transport in the form of a scooter can also convey these attributes over a long period of time in tough everyday life, the Piaggio Beverly 250 GT took the 25,000-kilometer test distance.
With its 16-inch wheels and stately appearance, it closes the gap between scooter and motorcycle. Thanks to the standard case and topcase as well as a flat but long compartment under the bench seat and a lockable glove compartment in the leg shield, it is not only a master of all flaps, but also at the fore when it comes to transporting luggage. The big wheels let the Beverly run stoically straight ahead and stable around the corner, but there are more agile vehicles for the bustle of the big city. But the Beverly cuts a fine figure out of town and on long journeys. The chassis is tightly sprung, well damped and offers not only good feedback but also reasonable comfort.
The powerful, smooth-running single-cylinder with a peak output of 22 hp masters even longer stretches of motorway or mountain passages quickly. Over the entire distance he was satisfied with around 4.5 liters of super, with deviations of up to 0.9 liters up and down, depending on whether leisurely cruising or a brisk ride was the order of the day. Either way, apart from the somewhat tight footwell, the crew is comfortably accommodated, the larger the size of the driver’s complaints about the handlebar-mounted windshield. Shortening the disc didn’t do much, so it disappeared entirely.
Another problem was the kill switch, which prevented the scooter from starting at irregular intervals and had to be tricked with a paper clip. But that didn’t help either when the control unit quit its service, whereupon the engine remained silent? in contrast to the affected driver. The black box was exchanged under guarantee, as was the jammed indicator switch and the steering head bearing, which was already worn after 13,000 kilometers. The latter seems to be a weak point of the Beverly, because at the end of the test it snaps back into the middle position.
Apart from these rather expensive weaknesses, the Beverly was frugal. A set of tires easily lasts 10,000 kilometers, and the brake pads are still the first, probably due to the high proportion of freeways during the long-distance test. The driving performance determined after 26,000 kilometers suggest a healthy engine. On the other hand, the two winters passed through have not left the Beverly without a trace. In addition to various screw heads, the muffler in particular suffered from road salt. The ample material thickness alone
has prevented holes in the outer shell so far. The damper is still tight and quiet, but it looks terrible.
The frame, however, shows no rust at all. The plastic cover shines like new after thorough cleaning, but the fuel filler flap only pops open after repeated requests. Beverly can serve with emozione, but the passione is put to the test by the shortcomings. The many practical flaps don’t help either.
