Bikes for newcomers to the A2 driving license

A2 driving license novices are allowed on the road with 48 hp. Too lean? Not at all. With this prescribed performance diet, driving pleasure does not have to fall by the wayside if you pay attention to the weight of the machine when choosing a motorcycle. The second hand offer is good.

Thorsten Dentges

04/01/2015

Eagle owl, the cardboard is in your pocket! Drive at last! But what kind of motorcycle should you choose if the A2 driver’s license sets the limit at 35 kilowatts, i.e. 48 hp? The good news: With this performance you are already a fully fledged motorcyclist. We remember the 27 hp limit, later 34 hp. An overweight four-cylinder air pump, for example, was more like cannon fodder on the country road. But since 2012 the manufacturers have focused on the 48 hp class and forged specially tailored mopeds that are not only sensible, but also put you in a good mood. And make life in the hustle and bustle of curves extremely difficult for many fat big bikes.

The somewhat bad news: Many of these models are not bargains due to their young age and high demand for second hand. Therefore, in addition to our nine recommendations, which we have brought more into focus, we have listed another nine tips as inexpensive used ones.

Bikes are trimmed for optimal driving dynamics

The selection consists of models that deliver a maximum of 48 hp ex works and have been trimmed for optimal driving dynamics. After all, there is little point in fighting your way as a beginner on a motorcycle that is overwhelmed with limited performance.

Even power development, a low vehicle weight for easy handling, if possible ABS or a large steering angle for easy maneuvering of the load are things that make a good motorcycle for beginners. Even if it has already been used as an empty phrase: less is often more! Also applies to advanced users.

Bella

Honda NC 700 S from 3200 euros.

The world’s largest motorcycle group did not want to miss the new 48 hp class in 2012 and designed a completely new series. In particular, the Honda NC 700 S (then NC 750 S), which was new for just 5500 euros until 2013, was well received and became a bestseller. No wonder, because for little money it offered the simplest controllability, astonishingly low fuel consumption, composite brake system with ABS or nice gimmicks like an ultra-practical storage compartment dummy that even swallows a full-face helmet.

The Honda NC 700 S falls into the “No Stress” category: reliable, sit on it and feel good, foolproof when driving. The two-cylinder develops its power very evenly, but the heaters quickly turn into the limiter during the traffic light sprint. This hardly bothered calmer touring riders, they are more pleased about the pillion suitability and exemplary possibilities for luggage storage. Since the motorcycle has sold well, the supply situation on the used market is very good. For 3500 euros there are perfectly maintained machines with mileage of 15,000 kilometers.

Plus: very low consumption; first-class ergonomics also for drivers over 1.85 meters; tight chassis; sophisticated engine.

Minus: Twin acts tiredly at higher speeds; last course too long.

Suzuki GS 500 F from 1800 euros.

Psst, now comes an insider tip! Because the Suzuki GS 500 Hardly anyone knows F, and only very few look for it specifically. Therefore guaranteed: a top price-performance ratio. The half-liter machine comes in a flashy sportswear and GSX-R 1000 style and was throttled in 2004 for the 34 HP entry-level class that was current at the time. And honestly? The rather slack engine generates more warm air than a super sporty atmosphere. But now the highlight: When open, the almost indestructible and since 1989 working in the base model GS 500 E, the in-line twin has an impressive 43 hp. They have no problem with a good four hundredweight with a full tank, and not much fuel flows through the carburettors even when the vehicle is brisk.

Short throttle valves and matching main nozzles and around half an hour in the workshop are sufficient for dethrottling. Cost: less than 150 euros. Good wind protection thanks to full cladding, large seat padding and a comfortable knee angle also enable longer tours. Class! Used are very neat, partially exempted from the 34 HP requirement, copies of the Suzuki GS 500 F with just 10,000 kilometers on the clock for a cool 2500 euros.

Plus: rigid frame; impeccable braking effect; durable engine; easy maintenance.

Minus: fiddly settings of the spring base; tends to corrode if it is not properly cared for.

Kawasaki W 800

48 hp motorcycles in used advice

Kawasaki W 800 from 4800 euros.

The first attempt went in the pants. In 1999, Kawasaki tried to establish a fluffy Brit-style retro bike with the W 650 – but it didn’t hit the zeitgeist. New quite a sales flop, but the 650s advanced to become an expensive used hit in the following years. Because there were buyers out there who appreciated the concept of an easy-to-use classic motorcycle. But only at second-hand prices of up to 5000 euros. Kawasaki reissued the motorcycle for Intermot 2010 and presented it to the Kawasaki there W 800 in front.

The response? Better. And since the 48 hp driver’s license regulation, the pretty machine has been the focus of many interested parties. Justified, because power and weight allow for refreshing country road excursions; Proportions, lines and materials are right. the Kawasaki W 800 fits the current vintage trend well, so this time the Japanese are spot on. The second-hand W 800 is in great demand – but should still not be offered for more than 5000 euros.

Plus: beautiful classic round clocks as instruments, chrome-plated mudguards; very predictable in extreme inclines.

Minus: Injection engine looks a bit listless and smoothly ironed; almost too inconspicuous sound; Suspension struts a little underdamped.

KTM 390 Duke from 3500 euros.

Courage for the gap: KTM released the 375 cc motorcycle on the road in 2013. Little sister Duke 125 has been well received by the very young and wild ones since 2010 and has become a bestseller in the eight-liter class. The almost 70 hp 690 Duke, which has been available since 2007 – which, by the way, is also available with a 48 hp throttle – appeals to hardcore fun bikers with a single-cylinder doctrine. So what are the advantages of the KTM 390 Duke??

First and foremost, the unbelievable handiness, due to the ultra-compact frame of the 125cc and the rigidly braced swingarm – similar to the 690. 44 HP, which has to be throttled by 2 HP due to power-to-weight regulations, ensure enough steam for every attack on sharp corners. And an ABS from Bosch for safety when braking, which is just over 150 kilograms. The KTM 390 Duke Not suitable for touring, but gives A2 motorcycle beginners a feeling of safety while driving and at the same time great fun. Second-hand, however, the KTM is not available as a special offer: the cheapest used offers start from 3500 euros.

Plus: extremely light, compact and manoeuvrable; great sound; Seat height also suitable for very small drivers; SECTION.

Minus: weak draft on rough gradients and from 130 km / h; poor touring comfort, poor weather protection.

Bella

Honda CBR 500 R from 3800 euros.

The Honda leans in its design CBR 500 R to Honda’s top athlete Fireblade. This is a bit misleading, because the good-natured motorcycle, which is tailored to A2 beginners, scores primarily with its versatility. Racer hotspurs are missing a bit of sharpness. The two-cylinder impresses with its extremely smooth running and even power delivery, but the economical combustion engine does not tease out any great emotions. The feel-good factor is also in the foreground when it comes to the chassis. The cushioning, which is designed for comfort, irons out patches of tar and other unevenness in an exemplary manner, but when braking sharply before the curve there is no clear feedback, and you miss some stability on the last groove.

So: not an athlete. But a successful touring bike with excellent rider ergonomics, ABS-assisted, strong and easy-to-dose disc brakes and low maintenance costs. The motorcycle made in Thailand also impresses with its good workmanship. The Honda CBR 500 R has been in the range as a new vehicle for a good 6100 euros since 2013. After the warranty period has expired, good used vehicles can be identified for less than 4000 euros.

Plus: almost vibration-free running of the two-cylinder; successful touring ergonomics; Range over 450 km.

Minus: somewhat boring engine characteristics; Bad luggage storage.

Yamaha XT 660 X

fact

Yamaha XT 660 X from 2300 euros.

The supply situation for the moderate Supermoto machine is good. Great used cars with mileages of less than 20,000 kilometers can be found well under 3000 euros. All in all, it is easy to find an attractive offer in the local area, even for well-kept copies of the Yamaha XT 660 X with four-digit mileage are rarely flipped over 4500 euros. The rock-solid single-cylinder engine, which has proven itself thousands of times, can withstand well over 50,000 kilometers with normal maintenance, as demonstrated by the MOTORRAD long-distance test.

Compared to a toxic 690 KTM, the stew is more of a tame companion, but it provides more entertainment than most multi-cylinder with similar performance. The Yamaha XT 660 X is not only convincing as a joker in sloping positions, but also as an all-rounder for everyday use. The injection keeps fuel consumption pleasantly low, and the driver’s seating position is surprisingly comfortable for a supermoto. The general balance suits beginners very well.

Plus: reliable engine; pleasantly handy, but with good straight-line stability; suitable for everyday use; good light.

Minus: too strenuous in the long run on motorway stages; Uncomfortable pillion seat.

Royal Enfield Bullet 500 from 2800 euros.

At this point we prefer not to talk about performance. Compared to other candidates presented here, these are at the Royal Enfield Bullet 500 namely, modest. No, it’s not about maximum lean angles and the best acceleration, but about enjoyable swinging and decelerating. This in turn works wonderfully with 28 HP released from a long-stroke engine. Hey, just a quick reminder: Anyone who made their cardboard in the 1980s or early 90s received a lot of soul as a newbie with 27 hp “carrots” like the Yamaha SR 500 or Kawasaki LS 650.

This is also the case with the Indian cult bike: brakes, chassis and performance data are a good 30 years behind. No problem for retro fans with a weakness for something special, because one thing is guaranteed: to attract attention. The Bullet, which was basically built with 1950s technology, has only been available as a 500 series since 1993; previously it was only available as a 350 series. It has been in the range with injection since 2009, but Enfield connoisseurs swear by the carburetor models. As used, the Royal Enfield makes itself Bullet 500 rather rare and is rarely offered for less than 3000 euros.

Plus: low fuel consumption; Sound turns on; precise and easy switching; very successful retro look.

Minus: Negligent processing; somewhat wobbly chassis; sparse equipment.

Kawasaki Ninja 300

Artist

Kawasaki Ninja 300 from 3500 euros.

Bad tongues speak of “barrel organ”. So they are not completely wrong when 40 HP are to be pressed out of two cylinders the size of a tea glass. That can only be done by speed, in the case of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 it’s five-digit. Even the not exactly lush torque of a maximum of 27 Newton meters is only available at 10,000 rpm. But instead of expressing yourself disrespectfully, one should rather associate the term “organ” with virtuosity. Because the 300 series has a very sporty chassis with crisp brakes – so that curves can be broken down into a wide variety of driving lines.

This elicits an enraptured giggle under their helmets even from advanced sports drivers. Almost identical in construction, the little Ninja was already available as a 250 from 2009 to 2012. But the in-line twin designed for more stroke in 2013 does 20 percent more and increases driving pleasure to the same extent. Because of the serial ABS, the Kawasaki is Ninja 300 Overall the better choice compared to the Ninja 250 R. Two-year-old used vehicles with a good 10,000 kilometers cost around 3500 euros.

Plus: Engine revving, potent and cultivated; relaxed sitting position; Equipped with slipper clutch and ABS.

Minus: Passenger ergonomics very modest; Suspension comfort moderate.

Honda Black Widow from 2800 euros.

The real name of the Black Widow is VT 750 and belongs to Honda’s mid-range cruiser fleet, which has been equipped with the same V2 for years. Phew, middle class and cruising – that sounds stuffy. Younger beginners could also enjoy the rocking Honda Black Widow. Timelessly successful proportions and a manageable 238 kilos make you really want to drive with your feet coolly forward. For comparison: current mid-range cruisers from Japan quickly weigh 280 kilos, and a slim Harley 883 also weighs 265 kilos.

The Honda Black Widow has a smooth-running, short-stroke three-valve engine that can handle six-figure mileage with proper maintenance. The chassis can cope well with roads of the first to medium order, and the leadership qualities of the 19-inch front wheel make it easy to turn. Makes a good mood! Bargain hunters have less fun with this older semester, you rarely find a Widow for less than 3000 euros. Extremely stable in price.

Plus: very good value retention; homogeneous driving behavior, also suitable for beginners; well stepped transmission.

Minus: Rear drum brake very weak; Struts a bit stubborn.

All about throttling

When too much of a good thing …

Almost every motorcycle can be throttled. But the PS diet doesn’t really make sense for every model. Be it because the motorcycle is carrying too much weight for 48 hp or because the performance characteristics are completely destroyed after throttling.

The leading supplier of 48 HP throttle sets, Alpha Technik in the Bavarian town of Stephanskirchen (phone 0 80 36/30 07 02, www.alphatechnik.de) offers suitable kits for over 200 models. Incidentally, a flat rate of 105 euros. In addition, there are any workshop costs – depending on the effort between 50 and 200 euros, if the cladding and other parts first have to be dismantled in a complicated manner. Then still TuV with new vehicle documents.

These are manageable costs, and they often result in undreamt-of opportunities to find your personal dream entry-level motorcycle. Common sense tells you that it doesn’t make much sense to throttle a Harley-Davidson E-Glide that weighs over 400 kilos, for example, just because it’s the bike of choice. Then it’s better to run in on another model for two years!

For many years, motorcycles up to 50 hp were extremely cheap in terms of insurance rates and therefore very popular. The manufacturers accordingly had numerous models with exactly 50 hp in their range, which are now being offered for sale on the used market like sour beer for very little money, because the current low-cost middle class is more limited to 78 hp. A2 driver’s license holders can do without 2 HP, but after throttling they still get very good machines – without excess weight and sometimes with full touring suitability as well as technology that is tailored to around this performance anyway. Typical example: the 190 kilo two-cylinder naked Kawasaki ER-5 Twister with a low seat height (secure stance) and an upright sitting position (stress-relieved driving). This machine, which is ideal for beginners, is more often offered in the 50 hp version from 1000 euros than many motorcycles limited to 48 hp in series. So it’s a smart buy. Or a Honda Transalp for beginners taller than 1.85 meters. It feels grown up and is still fully suitable for touring even with a pillion rider. A great travel enduro that, like so many somewhat outdated mid-range machines, does not turn up on the radar in a 48 hp search.

So advice: look for models with a performance just above the A2 limit, throttle them and enjoy the often cheaper and better model with almost the same driving dynamics. Also exciting because of the huge range of used vehicles: lightweight super sports bikes on which a two-year liaison with 48 hp is tolerable until it finally means: No Limits!
