The 2015 Alpine Masters is starting the next round: In the second part, twelve motorcycles battle it out for a place in the finals on the Dolomite passes in Trentino. Let’s go, hairpin bends and curves, we’re coming!

Bends with the highest demands, curves with a breathtaking rhythm, turbulent routes, grandiose views: the Dolomites inevitably cast a spell on motorcyclists. In the Dolos, as connoisseurs lovingly call them, numerous high mountain passes are lined up in a narrow space in stormy mountain and valley railways. Extremely varied routes lead through the imposing mountains between dramatic rock formations. Hairpin-sharp, bumpy serpentines are followed by wide, well-developed and fast bends, behind grippy asphalt unexpectedly slippery gravel lurks.

Whatever a motorcyclist can experience in the mountains – the Dolomites have it ready. A perfect area for the Alpine Masters, which MOTORRAD is holding for the eleventh time. In this largest group test in the world, which is also well received internationally, 20 machines are vying for the title of best motorcycle for alpine regions.

New or revised machines only

They compete against each other in groups of four, the winners advance to the finals. Making these groups as homogeneous as possible regularly turns out to be a real challenge, because the MOTORRAD testers cannot draw on the full range of the market: Only new or revised machines are allowed to take part in the Alpine Masters, which is why, for example, the BMW R 1200 GS in this one Year ago was left out.

In the five groups that finally form, the testers push all their machines to the limit. The test procedure is adapted to the requirements in the mountains; in the assessment, factors suitable for the mountains such as draft and handiness come into focus. Criteria that are normally taken into account in the MOTORRAD tests, such as maximum speed or inspection costs, are not counted because they are irrelevant for alpine enjoyment. There are also special stages in the Dolos such as braking downhill with a pillion passenger or pulling through at a height of 2000 meters.

MOTORCYCLE

The test route – Sellaronda à la MOTORRAD: Longer and without a Sella, because Valparola and especially the Pordoi are tester’s favorites.

Sellaronda is the name of the popular circumnavigation of the Sella massif for skiers and cyclists in Ladin, the dialect spoken in the test area between Trentino, South Tyrol and Veneto. For the Alpine Masters in the Dolomites, MOTORRAD chooses a lap that also goes around the Sella. The yoke itself with its rugged towers only serves as a photo motif.

The 100-kilometer test lap leads past the Sella over the more challenging Pordoi Pass. This year the starting point was the hotel “Andes” (1) in Vigo di Fassa. The actual test route begins in Canazei, twelve kilometers to the north, the capital of the Fassa Valley. In wide curves and bends it goes up to the Fedaia pass (2) with the thick dam wall at the foot of the Marmolada glacier.

After the wide, steep descent, the first special tests (3) for all machines follow: on a 15 percent incline or downhill gradient, the testers measure the uphill pull and the braking distance downhill, each with a passenger; steep stoppies occur again and again. The narrow driveway to Falzàrego (4) finally makes it clear which motorcycles have earned the title “handy”. On the long straight at Valparola (5) with its impressive scree landscape, the passage is measured at a height of 2000 meters during another special test. The varied, but very undulating descent is used, among other things, to test forks and suspension struts for their suitability. A permanent construction site with ruts and gravel in the hairpin bends behind Corvara (6) puts some traction control to the test. Via test potholes on Campolongo (7), the loop finally leads to Pordoi (8) with its dizzying 60 bends: the tester’s favorite pass with its demanding route helps to uncover even the smallest weaknesses in the motorcycles and is also a lot of fun.
