Compared to the “Factory”, the “R” dispenses with carbon trim and variable intake funnels. It has cast instead of forged wheels and Sachs instead of Ohlins spring elements. The steering head angle and the motor and swing arm bearings are not adjustable.

Aprilia RSV R / Factory ABS in the first test
Aprilia RSV4 R / Factory ABS in the test
Murderous brakes, musical V4
The Aprilia RSV4 has already won two world championship titles. So there is no question that she can race track. With revised electronic driving aids, a little more power and, above all, a race ABS, it claims the superbike crown.
Andreas Bildl
02/28/2013
Just a few years ago, one would not have dreamed that ABS would become an absolute must-have for superbikes. But now it is no longer possible without it. And so also equip Aprilia its flagship Aprilia RSV4 with a race-ready anti-lock device to finally take the crown in the superbikes.

But that alone would not ennoble the Aprilia RSV4 to a new model. An abundance of detailed improvements to ergonomics, chassis, electronics and a bit more performance should secure her place in the sun. Because, as a reminder, the last test on the racetrack (MOTORRAD 11/2012) the graceful Italian won. And in the previous country road shootout, only the lack of an anti-lock device prevented the jump very high onto the podium. This notch should now be wiped out.

The Aprilia RSV4 can brake like hell
Place of first contact: the technically demanding Estoril route. Both Aprilia RSV4 “R” and Aprilia RSV4 “Factory” are each available for one turn. Not much, but enough for a first impression: As usual, the pilot snaps into the compact, front-wheel-oriented seating position. The tank, which has grown in volume by one and a half liters, now rises a little steeper in front of the belly. But that doesn’t bother the committed hanging-off at all. In connection with the more pronounced contoured tank flanks, you now have slightly better options to support yourself when lying at an angle and when braking.
Because the Aprilia RSV4 can brake in a murderous way. The new monoblock pliers from Brembo grip lap after lap just as finely as they are relentless. Like at the end of the almost one kilometer long home straight, where it goes down from sixth to second gear. The ABS always acts on both wheels. Even in track mode, in which the lift detection of the rear wheel is not active. The immense grip allows for such vehement deceleration that the machine nervously prances back and forth, the rear wheel gently in the air, before the ABS even thinks of intervening. Anyone who has fears that ABS could affect braking performance on the racetrack should be reassured.
Long drawn wheelies in racetrack mode
In road mode and even more so in rain mode, the Bosch system, which weighs two kilograms and can be switched off, works just as effectively with crisp, short control pulses as does the lift detection, which reliably kept the rear wheel on the road, especially in rain mode. In road mode, it fully intervenes up to 80 km / h, up to 140 km / h with a slightly decreasing intensity, before it then disengages above it. The newly coordinated wheelie control of the Aprilia RSV4 also leaves a good impression. Consistent in rain mode, but not harsh, it allows nice, long wheelies in race track mode.
The Aprilia RSV4’s fine balance has not been robbed of the fact that the seat height, engine and swing arm pivot point have been lowered by five millimeters for more braking stability. The Aprilia RSV4 R threads its way confidently and neutrally through the mean chicane. The Aprilia RSV4 Factory benefits significantly from its lighter forged wheels, is noticeably easier to steer into deep inclines and accelerate out of the corners in a provocatively tight manner. And the musical V4 has always been a very powerful and entertaining partner anyway.
It is wonderful how it tears at the exit of the curve, the automatic gearshift seamlessly lined up gear to gear. Although the Aprilia RSV4 fidgeted with the handlebars more than usual. Unusual also the newly coordinated eight-stage traction control. It now not only processes lean angle and slip information, but now also includes the speed. Which means that first-gear corners can also be mastered better. Above all, however, it is tuned even more racially. So the driven level five should correspond to the previous, already quite sharp level three. She watched over the rear wheel well, but allowed a surprising amount of slip every now and then. To what extent the new coordination is a step forward could not be found out with the short driving time.
It can be said that the Aprilia RSV4 is still in the top league in terms of ergonomics, engine and chassis, but has now been enriched with great ABS brakes. Everything else will be clarified with more time when the knives are sharpened on the racetrack. And we’re already looking forward to it.
