BMW has presented a new assistance system called Active Cruise Control (ACC), which regulates the speed and the distance to other vehicles. Such distance cruise control systems have been used in cars for some time.

The new BMW Active Cruise Control (ACC) assistance system is designed to increase comfort while driving and make motorcycling a little safer. BMW motorcycle promises in the official press release relaxed gliding with automatic cruise control, without having to automatically adapt the driving speed to the vehicle in front. Such systems have been used in cars for some time and are very popular. The new assistance system was developed in collaboration with Bosch. According to the company’s own statements, many years of experience with the car driver assistance systems of both companies were combined during development.
Automatic regulation of the driving speed
According to BMW, the new assistance system is aimed primarily at ambitious touring drivers who want more comfort while driving on the motorways. The new assistance system enables automatic regulation of the speed desired by the driver and the distance to the vehicle in front. As soon as the distance becomes too short and dangerous situations could arise, Active Cruise Control automatically reduces the speed and restores the distance to the vehicle in front as defined by the driver. The distance can be set in three different stages. Similar to the systems known from cars, the speed and the distance can be conveniently set using a switch on the handlebars while driving. The settings and required information are also displayed on the motorcycle’s TFT screen. BMW has given the new assistance system two different modes in which acceleration and deceleration are influenced differently: Comfortable and Dynamic.

The new BMW assistance system is intended to make motorway journeys more comfortable and safer.
The new assistance system can of course also be deactivated if desired. BMW Motorrad Active Cruise Control also influences handling when cornering. If necessary, the speed is automatically reduced and a comfortable incline is aimed for. In addition, the new assistance system limits the braking and acceleration dynamics, if necessary, in order to ensure stable driving behavior and not to unsettle the pilot. BMW Motorrad emphasizes that the new assistance system is merely an aid – responsibility remains with the driver, who can always intervene himself. The system does not work with stationary vehicles, for example in a traffic jam. Here you still have to brake yourself. So far, BMW has not mentioned in which models the new system will be used or whether it can be retrofitted. In addition, it is not yet entirely clear when ACC will be installed in new models – but it will not take too long.
Conclusion
Assistance systems that make motorcycling more comfortable and safer are always welcome. Motorcycles from other manufacturers are also likely to be equipped with similar systems in the near future. At least KTM has announced that the new 1290 Super Adventure will be equipped with a similar system.
