Motorcycling in a networked world, without a helmet, without protective clothing, without risks, with the ultimate feeling of freedom. This is what the concept study is supposed to do BMW motorcycle Vision Next 100 according to the manufacturer. This should be made possible by various assistance systems and the permanent networking of motorcycle, driver and the environment. With the study, BMW would like to show what could be possible in around two to three decades.

In addition to the many more futuristic features of the concept study, individual elements are intended to be reminiscent of the classic design of former BMW motorcycles, such as the black triangular frame, which was used in the BMW R32 as early as 1923, or the white lines and the classic shape of the boxer engine in which houses the emission-free drive of the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100 study.

Flexible steering frame and assistance systems

The so-called “Flexframe” spans from the front to the rear wheel and, thanks to its flexibility, allows steering maneuvers without the usual joints. The entire frame deforms, allowing direction changes when the handlebars are moved. Steering maneuvers when stationary should be particularly easy. At higher speeds, however, the frame should also offer greater rigidity.

The networking between rider, motorcycle and the environment should make critical driving situations predictable. The assistance systems are designed to alert the driver to dangerous situations and to intervene in an emergency. In addition, the future bike is supposed to balance itself independently thanks to the active assistance systems while driving and when stationary. The motorcycle cannot fall over, even if the driver has already got off. The driving experience should also become more agile and dynamic.

Exchange of information thanks to data glasses

The exchange of information between driver and vehicle is to be realized with the help of data glasses that surround the field of vision. The so-called “visor” projects situationally relevant data directly into the driver’s field of vision. The field of view should be divided into four display areas, which are controlled by the viewing height. The normal viewing plane does not show any content while driving. If action is required or the driver needs special information, the display changes. If necessary, for example, help on the ideal line, inclined position or on potential danger spots is displayed. According to BMW, the display should be similar to that in an aircraft cockpit. In addition, the glasses should also protect profane from the wind and ward off suicidal flies.

In addition, the data glasses should offer a rear-view mirror function that is activated when looking up. If the driver looks down, a menu opens that can be operated using finger gestures. A map view including route planning appears in the field of vision if the driver lowers his gaze even further.

Next generation driver clothing

When developing the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100 concept study, BMW also thought of the rider equipment. A helmet and conventional protective clothing should be omitted. The suit shown in the photos should be wind and weather protection. A climate function is supposed to cool or warm the driver depending on the weather. The system uses sensors to monitor data such as pulse and body temperature.

The neck area of the clothing can be filled with air when driving fast, which is supposed to relieve the cervical spine. Otherwise the suit does not offer any safety functions. According to BMW, this is not necessary due to the intelligent assistance systems, since falls should be excluded anyway. With the help of vibrating elements on the arms and legs, for example, the driver should be made aware of a necessary change in the direction of travel, for example if the navigation system wants to alert the driver that he has missed the turn-off.
