BMW S 1000 R driving report: model upgrade and M-package
BMW S 1000 R with M package in the driving report
Snappy revving, posh throttle response, rich pressure
The competition of the BMW S 1000 R brings more power and electronics into the field. The brand new S 1000 R (2021) is likely to continue to cause serious headaches for its competitors.
Andreas Bildl

The people of Munich have not turned the performance screw – very self-confidently – again. Why also? 165 hp are more than enough on the country road and that also gives the BMW S 1000 R So far, the competition has been ironed out in comparison tests. According to product manager Maximilian Renko, the engineers were given the task of designing a 1-liter engine optimally for country roads.
Snappy revving, full pressure
The result was the 165 PS and 115 Nm of the R, with which the BMW S 1000 R should also cause serious headaches for the competition in 2021. Because up to 6,000 rpm it not only offers more torque than the Superbike S 1000 RR, but also delivers snappy revving, posh throttle response and full pressure from the center.
New BMW S 1000 R 7 kg lighter
In addition to the basic engine, the BMW S 1000 R also took over the chassis from the RR, which in addition to the current frame also includes the swing arm with support. In addition, the Munich-based company also worked hard on its weight: the new R shed around seven kilograms – five on the engine, two by grabbing the parts rack for the Superbike sister’s wheels, and the swing arm contributes around 1.3 kilograms.
BMW also further trimmed the S 1000 R towards ease of use. This includes around 16 mm more seat height and the handlebars moved 20 mm further forward – for more pressure on the front wheel and more feedback from it. Drivers who are 175 cm tall can still put both feet on the ground with ease.
New chassis geometry
How does it all feel? Bombastic! Because the BMW S 1000 R nestles nicely between the knees thanks to its narrow waist, and the seating position is a bit more aggressive, but not demanding. But above all because it continues to rage through the chaos of curves. The new chassis geometry with a longer wheelbase, steeper steering head angle and shorter caster stands out. She has lost none of her aggressiveness. On the contrary.
M package with carbon fiber wheels
Predictable and balanced, with enormous greed for curves, the BMW S 1000 R draws its lines with high precision and folds slightly out of the central position. Especially when it is equipped with the carbon fiber wheels from the M package. The light cogs reduce the rotating mass enormously and are supposed to push the total weight below the 200 kilo mark.
In general, BMW has pepped up the equipment: On board are LED headlights and a 6.5-inch TFT display that offers full connectivity. The six-axis IMU from the superbike monitors ABS and traction control depending on the lean angle and, in addition to the three driving modes (Rain, Road and Dynamic) in the optional Dynamic Pro mode, allows wheelie control to be adjusted in four stages – independently of traction control. The Dynamic Pro mode also offers launch control, a pit lane limiter and motor tow control.
Comfort and suitability for everyday use
In addition, the developers also lend a hand on the chassis set-up. Thanks to the linear linkage, the shock absorber uses its spring travel more effectively. And the damper tuning in road mode of the semi-active chassis (optional) has now been designed to be noticeably more comfortable.
The efforts of the developers to make everyday life with the BMW S 1000 R even more pleasant can also be seen in the vibration-decoupled handlebar brackets, which can be moved forward by a further 10 mm by turning the handlebars. In addition, the all too poisonous initial bite of the brake was somewhat defused the first time it was put on. And acoustically, the S 1000 R is now more discreet: the sometimes quite cheeky exhaust boom has been virtually eliminated. The new steering angle should reduce the turning circle by one meter.
Price BMW S 1000 R
BMW’s Power Naked Bike costs from 14,740 euros. The color variant in which the S 1000 R rolled up for the driving report is part of the M package. It costs 2,800 euros extra and, in addition to the M paintwork, also includes M forged wheels, a sports seat designed for the racetrack, Akrapovic exhaust, M Endurance chain, a lighter battery and an activation code for the M GPS lap trigger. If you want to upgrade to the M carbon wheels, you have to add another 2,100 euros.
Conclusion
Let’s come back to the topic of top performance. Nobody complained about too little – at least when it came to the trip – which should certainly not make the competition’s lines of concern any less. And the fact that the developers were also concerned with everyday life, despite all the driving dynamics, is shown, for example, by the one meter smaller turning circle.
