The BMW S 1000 XR attacks the still young and exciting segment of half-faired, sporty touring motorcycles. With her extremely strong drive, she claims the leadership role from the start.

It all started a good five years ago with the S 1000 RR. Friends of Japanese and European superbikes still painfully remember the appearance of the high-flyer. A noble and extremely expensive offshoot followed in 2013 with the HP4. At the beginning of last year, BMW finally entered the super sporty naked bike segment with the S 1000 R. Now the Bavarians strike again and present with the BMW S 1000 XR the fourth machine with the powerful four-cylinder. They call this still young category “Adventure Sport”.

What exactly is it? As usual immodest, BMW describes the new one as a bike that meets all demands. The BMW S 1000 XR is based on the S 1000 R and should master normal everyday life as well as the big tour for two and, of course, sporty inserts. However, the white and blue avoid the term “terrain” and prefer to talk about bad road sections, i.e. gravel roads or gentle dirt roads. They are also the only plausible reason for the long spring travel of the XR. 150 millimeters at the front and 140 mm at the rear increase the ground clearance. From a sporting point of view, however, they are more of a hindrance. Because, of course, long suspension travel brings more movement into the load, and the increased center of gravity increases the wheelie and stoppie tendency.
Dynamic ESA ensures surprisingly stable rounds
Nevertheless, the BMW S 1000 XR does its laps surprisingly stable at the presentation in the beautiful hinterland of Barcelona. The reason for this is probably the Dynamic ESA. The electronic system controls the damping behavior of the fork and shock absorber depending on the driving condition. While the algorithm previously only included acceleration and deceleration, the latest version also detects the lean angle thanks to a spring travel sensor on the shock absorber and a clever sensor box. In conjunction with the “Pro riding modes”, the pilot also has the option of setting the basic damping setting to soft (“Road”) or firm (“Dynamic”). This also works while driving, and you can clearly feel the difference between the two levels. In the event of an attack, however, in the soft setting, the rear sometimes swings a lot and on “Dynamic” it tramples insensitively over a lousy surface. We would like some more fine-tuning here.
This is not necessary with the dynamic traction control DTC or with the ABS Pro. Depending on the driving mode, the systems of the BMW S 1000 XR regulate surprisingly late and allow sporty attack. In addition, the ABS Pro helps to avoid take-off in the event of a startle braking in curves by allowing less brake pressure with increasing lean angle. The system works perfectly, but logically cannot override the physics. Attention hotspurs: falls are still possible in extreme cases! For this purpose, wheelies and stoppies are only permitted in Dynamic Pro mode, which is activated via the supplied decoding plug. In addition, the free travel of the brake lever increases a little when driving sharply and braking drifts do not work at all because of the lean ABS. If you want to bypass the restrictions of the driver assistance, you can switch it off at any time. As usual, BMW will only add the above and other features to the bike for extra cash.

On the other hand, there is the fabulous handling at no extra charge
Despite a fighting weight of 228 kilograms (factory specification) and the pirelli Diablo Rosso II, who are good at sticking but not exactly known for their great agility, the BMW S 1000 XR sweeps through the corners like a whirlwind. In addition, it does not provide the crystal-clear feedback of a super sports car at the front and rear, but the BMW angles wonderfully neutral and stays clean on the favorite line. If it turns out to be closer than planned: No problem, the long fork playfully changes to any course – world class! For this purpose, the Munich-based company changed the chassis of the S 1000 R, in some cases radically: a different main frame with a flatter steering head, a reinforced and longer rear frame, a longer swing arm, more progressive deflection of the shock absorber. We already mentioned the longer spring travel. Due to the higher vehicle weight, however, the payload only increased by six to 206 kilos.
The successful ergonomics help to ensure that shooting is as stress-free as possible. The handlebars were 13 millimeters wider and around 80 mm higher than with the naked one. To do this, it is around 30 mm closer to the driver. The knee angle is also more relaxed thanks to the greater distance from the bench to the notches (plus 35 mm). Because of the longer spring travel, the seat height increased from 814 to 840 mm. This fits perfectly for normal people, while tall and short people can fall back on appropriate seat heights. The BMW S 1000 XR also impresses when it comes to wind protection. In relation to the size, the two-way adjustable lens provides very good protection for the upper body and also directs the air evenly to the helmet.
And what about the engine??
With the exception of minimal mapping changes, the BMW S 1000 XR has exactly the same impulsive propellant as the naked bike. Means: Huge 160 horses are tugging at the gearbox. Below about 7000 rpm, the quadruplet, which is usually a bit rough, marches very hard.
But only from this mark on does it really fire and generate gasps when it is not needed. A real hammer for a bike in this category! The sound goes with it: the BMW S 1000 XR also roars pithily, but with the new, more voluminous muffler it doesn’t scream quite as barbarically as its naked sister. In addition, the Shift Assistant Pro allows clutch-free upshifts and downshifts and conveys a real racing feeling. Charging through the gears, however, requires courageous use of the shift foot. What fits the pithy character of the XR – and stormy encounters.

The BMW S 1000 XR is a co-founder of the new genre of sporty and half-faired machines without off-road requirements, which cover a very wide range of applications.
The BMW S 1000 XR continues the tradition of its four-cylinder sisters and turned out to be very sporty. She is co-founder of the new genre of sporty and half-faired machines without off-road demands, which cover a very wide range of applications. However, the XR scratches with the appropriate equipment at the 18,000 euro mark. The people of Munich rely on affluent customers in this segment. With what success remains to be seen.
