The official Honda Pata team was counting on making sparks this weekend during "their" event in Assen. Under pressure, Leon Haslam unfortunately cracked … his left tibia and fibula when he fell in the wet this morning. Game over.
"I am really looking forward to getting back on my bike in Assen", declared the n ° 91 of the Honda team yesterday. And there was plenty: during the last six Superbike races contested in the "Cathedral" of Assen, his teammate Jonathan Rea has been on the podium five times, four times on the top step !
Leon then recalled that he had finished himself, when he was starting in WSBK on the Fireblade of the Stiggy Motorsport team. Back on Honda this year, Haslam relied on the Assen – CBR1000RR fit to launch its 2013 season….
"We made a lot of progress on the bike thanks to the tests we did in Spain but unfortunately we had some problems during the race weekend in Aragón", detailed the new recruit of Ten Kate.
"The layout and the corners of Assen suit our chassis perfectly, there is no long straight and this time we hope to have better results" … Alas, from the first disputed test session in the rain Leon Haslam fell, breaking his left leg.
Leon’s wife took over on the pilot’s twitter account: "The fracture is just below the knee, he hit the wheel. New x-rays and tests will help plan the next step: pin or plate. Whatever I know he is much stronger than me, my respect for him has quadrupled ".
While Leon Haslam is forced to forfeit – for how long? -, the other "Leon" who was not sure whether to ride this weekend because of – him too! – was able to take to the track and posted a reassuring 10th time in qualifying practice this afternoon…
Very impressive, Tom Sykes figures alone at the top of the timesheet: he precedes the leader of the championship Sylvain Guintoli, a second and a half slower! Our two other compatriots set the 8th and 13th fastest times respectively. Superpole to follow tomorrow afternoon, on Site of course !
