Children on the motorcycle
Kid stuff

Can the child go on a motorcycle? A contentious question. Parents have to decide for themselves whether their offspring is ready for the adventure together. There is no discussion about clothing, however: kids need real motorcycle clothing!

Thorsten Dentges

Motorcyclists love to share. Preferably her hobby. It is nice when two partners are in agreement on this matter, because then there is no quarrel between them
Planning of leisure time together. If children come along, it turns out quickly
the question of whether the offspring is just like that
can be saddled. This is possible by law, the paragraph
35a (9) of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) stipulates: »Motorcycles on which a passenger is transported must be equipped with a seat for the passenger. This does not apply when taking a child under the age of seven with you if a special seat is available for the child and wheel covers or other equally effective devices ensure that the child’s feet cannot get caught in the spokes. ”
But even if the child is allowed to ride on the motorcycle under these conditions, that does not mean that they want to. Ralf Kuhl, owner of the Motorrad-Kinderland in Moosinning near Munich, knows such cases. For example the family man who switched from a solo machine to a BMW team in the hope of making the whole family happy. Unfortunately, the two little ones didn’t set foot in the sidecar, let alone in the back seat. And although this example is more of an exception, you should first check whether the child and not just the driver is actually interested in the joint trip.
So that the joy is not spoiled, the little ones should be properly dressed. Adequate clothes for children are found from size 98 upwards. Just like adults, the clothes must fit perfectly and should be particularly tear and abrasion resistant in the areas at risk of falling. Solid nylon fabrics and proper protectors, if possible CE-tested, that do not slip, or at least a retrofit option are positive criteria.
A waterproof and windproof climate membrane is also great. Some manufacturers offer size-adjustable suits with zippers that can grow with the children. A new piece doesn’t have to be produced every season.
The matter is more difficult with the boots: Are the feet too big, do you need new botts? expensive fun, because a good boot quickly costs over 100 euros. If you don’t want to afford motorcycle boots for reasons of cost, you should at least use leather hiking boots that reach over the ankle. These are also useful in normal everyday life and are always better than textile or even rubber boots, which could merge badly with the skin in the event of a fall.
This is also the advice of expert Kuhl. His motorcycle children’s area is in the basement
of the apartment building and is, contrary to the name suggests, quite unspectacular: a small, lovingly designed exhibition room with a few clothes racks, a shelf full of helmets and a full of boots. “Very few customers come to me directly. I send most of the articles after extensive phone calls
Advice on order by post, «says the 39-year-old industrial clerk, who runs the business with children’s motorcycle clothing in his spare time.
Whoever comes to cool will be first
asked: buy or rent? The latter is especially interesting for those who want to give their children a first try, or the clothes are just for one
Need vacation. The monthly rent for an item of clothing is around one tenth of the selling price. »The around 50 euros for a complete rental equipment should be left over before investing a lot of money and the little ones prefer none after the first test round around the block
Want to pursue a career as a pillion passenger, ”says Kuhl, promoting the rental option, which is little known so far. The Federal Association of Motorcyclists (BVDM) has been offering so-called leather leasing for youngsters for years, which means that leather suits in children’s sizes made especially for the association can be rented. BVDM takes care of that-
Member of Kuhl volunteers in addition to his own rental. However, since most interested parties today prefer textile suits, leather clothing for children is of marginal importance.
For families with children who regularly go on motorcycle tours
goes along, it is advisable to use a sentence
to buy matching clothes. In recent years, supply has become more gratifying-
wise enlarged. Even if large sales are not expected, have branch-
chains and mail order companies such as Buse, Hostettler (Ixs), Louis and Polo now have entire children’s lines in their range. Smaller manufacturers and providers such as Cima-Schlier, Orina or Difi can also equip the young passengers appropriately.
For most parents, the decisive purchase criterion is the price. Since the clothes usually only fit one season, the pain threshold is 100 euros per item. Helmet manufacturers such as Uvex, Kiwi or Vemar sell special ones
Children’s full-face helmets which, thanks to their smaller shell, are lighter and better compatible with the not-yet-special-
ders mature neck muscles of the
Child. Jet helmets that do not have chin protection should be avoided on the solo motorcycle.
In addition to the right clothing, there are a few rules to keep everyone having fun
have: For a passenger from the
Pampers League (under three years of age) the motorcycle is taboo. Unless a Bei-
car is available. The passenger specifies the interval between breaks (travel time should be
smaller children do not exceed 30 minutes!), and the tour should be child-friendly with stops at playgrounds, exciting sights or even sometimes
be designed at the ice cream parlor. Also important: Driving like in driving school, not like on the racetrack! And the child has to be mature enough to know,
everything that happens while driving (banking, overtaking maneuvers or the like). The child does not understand that it is
for boredom, for a pee break or for
If you have to give an agreed signal to another problem (for example, pat the driver on the thigh), it is as a passenger on a solo motorcycle
not suitable. An intercom system is ideal because kids want to communicate immediately when they notice something.
Now one might ask,
whether the driving pleasure falls by the wayside. Family and motorcycle fan Ralf Kuhl, who regularly travels with his two sons on two wheels,
explains why it’s still worth it:
»Motorcycling is a special adventure for children. Share this and
Organizing my free time together is more important to me than driving fun, which I can also have alone.

Interview: Dr. med. Norbert Beil, sports medicine specialist

When is a child fit to get on a motorcycle without hesitation??
Mini-Crossers, for example, are already starting
as a five-year-old competed actively. A child’s body is easier to cope with
a fall because the musculoskeletal system is more elastic. When actively driving
they can respond to unforeseen situations-
react automatically. For children
As a passenger, however, I see bigger ones
Hazards. Because of different physical proportions, they should in no case be viewed as small adults. For example, I want a small child
Drivers stop by for something from the
To hear what is happening in front of him, he has to lean to one side. If I can’t see ahead easily, I wouldn’t take the child with me.
So leave the little ones at home?
Not that one. With a gentle driving style
are the loads on almost all types of motorcycles
comparatively low for the young co-driver compared to sports that are common in children. To get the
Not to spoil shared fun forever, the child should be able to ride along without fear. In addition, one should take into account the other biological requirements. Avoid abrupt maneuvers at all costs! Because of their lower body mass and thinner adipose tissue, children cool down faster and therefore need sensible air-conditioning clothing. Their ability to concentrate is lower, so the driver should stop at least every ten
Minutes to make sure that the young passenger is still involved. Basically, the Mit-
Driving ability can be trained by cycling, mini-cross or other sports that develop motor skills and coordination in the child. In short, sporty children are more likely to be allowed to ride a motorcycle.
