Of course, every provider looks for one or the other unique selling point on the market. However, you should definitely heed some principles when furnishing. So it is almost grossly negligent if you do without the Velcro fastener on the wrist of gloves (Modeka).

Drafts, noise, moisture: the lower chin section of the helmet lets a lot of unpleasant things happen if it is not equipped with a large, effective wind deflector. The best: Almost every helmet can be retrofitted with this comfort insert in a few simple steps.

The easiest way to adjust the jacket collar to necks of different thicknesses is to use a Velcro fastener. But those who wear balaclavas or kerchiefs know about the murderous power of the fabric tape with its barbs. Collars with firmly adhering magnetic fasteners are a practical alternative.

One of the critical points at which water can penetrate the inside of the suit is the front closure of the jacket. Which is why special care is required when closing. Everything that is in front of the sealing front labyrinth, such as this Napoleon pocket, is definitely not waterproof.

Where do the glove cuffs go when it rains? Of course, under the sleeves so that the draining water doesn’t run into the gloves like a funnel. Which is why the sleeves not only open wide enough, but also – ideally with Velcro fasteners – should be closed tightly again.

Opening or closing zippers with your bare hand is, of course, no great art. However, there are some zippers that have to be operated with gloves, for example on the sleeve ends when the glove cuff is stowed underneath. Very few providers think about that.

Joint protectors yes, but a real back protector is an absolute in short supply for almost all suits. Big exception: The Modeka jacket does not contain an alibi pillow, but a back protection certified according to the standard (EN 1621-2). For all others, a sometimes heavy surcharge is due.

Motorcyclists should always keep a cool head. It is all the more annoying when tiny, extremely fiddly levers are provided on the helmet for the fresh air supply. There is another way, as Caberg shows with its wide, easily accessible and glove-friendly sliders.

Learn from the winner? Many of the boots in this test followed the well-known construction principle of the tried and tested Daytona boots with wide-opening tabs. But in terms of comfort, none of the test copies could actually hold a candle to the boots from Eggenfelden.

Helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots: is there perfect motorcycle equipment from a single source? For a maximum of 1000 euros? Nine sets have to prove themselves in the test.

Jorg Lohse

04/11/2013

A maximum of a thousand for a complete set of equipment? That will be an absolutely cheap combination, a colleague in the editorial team escapes when he learns about the planned test. Indeed? We need five individual parts for a set: helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and pants. In purely mathematical terms, there are 200 euros available per item. For this amount you would get real noble grabbers for gloves. But we don’t want that. The regalia, according to our requirement for the nine mail-order companies, chain stores and specialist retail brands that really sell everything from head to toe, should primarily be suitable for travel. So meet the demands of touring riders. This includes comfortable head protection, optionally as an integral or flip-up helmet. Special request: a sun visor should be integrated. For the rest of the equipment, the requirement was: solid wind and weather protection in the form of membrane-tipped clothing. In accordance with this requirement, it was now up to the providers themselves to put together a well-coordinated set for motorcycle tourists.

In the case of the gloves alone, you now have to invest significantly less than 200 euros. This saving creates a little financial freedom for the combination of the other products. Now where to spend more? The helmets could be upgraded, but you don’t have to. The class of 200 euro helmets is popular with German motorcyclists and is one of the top sellers in the shops – it is practically the golf class of motorcycle helmets: no big bells and whistles, designed for the best possible price-performance ratio and the bottom line anything but junk goods that are sold at discounters for a quarter of the price, for example. Even with boots, you can go a long way with 200 euros. There are no real Daytonas made in Germany for this sum, but a look at the test field shows that quite a few suppliers have been inspired by the masterfully made boots from Eggenfelden in Bavaria.

The replica of the classic touring boot from Daytona with a double zipper for the front flap is available as a Far East product for half the price of the 300 euro original. The only question that remains is whether it can really hold a candle to the role model in terms of functionality and comfort. The test shows once again that making comfortable shoes requires a high level of craftsmanship. The Daytona clones do not come close to the original in terms of fit, comfort and stable fit.

So it makes sense to invest in textile clothes and instead of a low-budget combination for 400 euros you can now offer a mid-range suit between 500 and 600 euros. What is there in return? At least not yet jacket and pants with the Gore-Tex climate membrane. When it comes to weather protection, they usually rely on no-name climate membrane constructions, but the much better-known Sympatex brand is also represented here and there. Basically, these membrane solutions also work reliably. There is a greater risk of water ingress where there are constructive weaknesses, for example if the front labyrinth is not properly thought out or the overlapping of jacket and trousers is insufficient. Or even fabrics are used on the outer skin that draw moisture into the inside of the jacket or trousers by means of a capillary effect.

Real errors are now relatively rare among established providers, as shown by the simulation of an extensive rain drive using the Karcher high-pressure sprayer. Of course, the fabrics and fabrics are provided with a thick, water-repellent impregnation ex works, which decreases significantly over time with continuous use. Which is why the user is challenged at this point: Regular maintenance in the washing machine means that functionality can be maintained longer than without it, and the impregnation is also refreshed with an iron or tumble dryer. Post-treatment with sprays from specialist retailers (for example from Dr. Wack) also effectively prevents a possible ingress of moisture. All in all, however, all of the station wagons in the “Wetness Protection” chapter are on par.

Significantly more differences occur in the general structure. There are suits in the test that look like textile suits have always looked: thick, puffy, long three-quarter style. These old-school suits are increasingly being displaced by a new category that, thanks to elastic fabrics, is now much crisp, but still feels really comfortable. Second advantage: the protectors no longer flicker loosely around the joints, but are now much more precise and close to the body.

Speaking of protectors: that also remains a sore point in the middle class. No provider does without the joint protectors when equipping jackets and trousers. But almost all of them – with the exception of Modeka – on a decent back protector. There is nothing more than a poor placeholder in the pockets provided for this purpose. After all: polo requires just ten euros for retrofitting with a CE-certified back protector, and most other providers now have a protective back cover for a maximum of 30 euros surcharge. Incidentally, the same applies to the hip area: Here, too, there is only a thin alibi pad in the pockets, which can hardly counteract the forces of a fall. This protection should now also be part of the standard in the middle class.

Which clothing brands can convince?

Which combination now for whom? All in all, the picture is quite positive. The job that many providers have done is basically good. For example with weather protection, where no piece of equipment is exposed in the test. In addition, each of the nine complete sets can score with some highlights, but there are only a few real outliers (downwards). When it comes to helmets, the “real” brands such as Caberg or AGV score particularly well.

In the case of the manufacturers’ own brands (such as Bayard, Nexo, Rocc), which are mostly bought at a production site in the Far East, a rather average test result predominates. In any case, nobody can create a real aha experience. It looks different with the suits. Even if these are usually only manufactured at a few locations in Asia, the product developers of the individual brands seem to have significantly more (decision) leeway. This also applies to the gloves, which have an astonishing variety.

In the end, the question remains whether the sum of 1000 euros is sufficient to put together an ideal combination from the test? The two editors, who finally put together a set of preferences for two different target groups (naked bikes / everyday tours, travel enduros / vacation trips), cannot exactly adhere to the limit, but at least they stay very close to this requirement.

Recommended extras: Pinlock visor 25.95 euros, back protector 59.95 euros

Conclusion
Buse offers a very well coordinated package for touring riders who travel a lot. A special plus point: the completely dismountable suit, which turns into an extremely well-ventilated summer suit by removing the climate membrane. A very good feature is the adventure jacket’s thermal lining, designed as a leisure jacket. The flip-up helmet impresses with its comfortable fit and comfort, but the bottom line is that it is very loud. The gloves can be perfectly integrated into the jacket, especially in bad weather, and offer a tight, non-slip fit. On the other hand, boots that are too narrow and the footbed are too slippery.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Price complete: 859.75 euros

Recommended extras: Pinlock visor 29.95 euros, helmet wind deflector 11.99 euros, back protector 17.99 euros

Conclusion
With just under 860 euros, Detlev has Louis a very affordable complete set that is not really convincing in the practical sum as a total package. The bottom line is that the package is lacking in balance. The beefy suit in the old-school cut doesn’t really go with the sporty gloves and the overall too bulky cruiser-sized boots. You can also tell the age of the good quality Nolan helmet. Newer flip-up helmets are now more comfortable, quieter and easier to wear. Functionally, however, there is nothing to complain about: In the wetness test, the Louis regalia is absolutely tight.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Price complete: 889.50 euros

Recommended extras: Fuse functional underwear Megalight 69.90 euros, Forcefield back protector 49.90 euros, Forcefield neck warmer 31.90 euros

Conclusion
At the Hessian specialist trade brand Germot The quiet flip-up helmet from Caberg with its snug fit and comfortable interior is particularly impressive in the practical test. However, it takes getting used to the unlocking of the chin part, which automatically engages after opening. The tight-fitting textile suit scores with good equipment and a loose, light fit and is also very suitable for sports riders. But boots and gloves can’t keep up on the same level. The package, which is priced at just under 900 euros, can be upgraded with great functional underwear from Fuse and a Forcefield back protector.

  • Plus: waterproof
  • Minus: chunky, not very supple leather, presses when walking and driving; Overall, the boot sits very loosely and cannot be firmly attached to the foot; Footbed very slippery, offers little support; fiddly, relatively ineffective Velcro fastener on the instep

MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

Price complete: 699.79 euros

Recommended extras: Pinlock visor 29.95 euros, Hiprotec back protector 19.95 euros, Hiprotec hip protector 14.95 euros

Conclusion
A set that starts well at the top (helmet) and clearly subsides at the bottom (boots). A real plus point in the Gericke package is the well-fitting helmet from HJC, which impresses with its comfort, but also aerodynamically and acoustically. With the three-quarter jacket and “riding trousers”, the suit is rather old-fashioned and does not offer the dynamic mobility of compactly styled touring sport suits. In return, however, rock-solid weather protection right up to the practical storm collar, which even the Karcher sprayer cannot harm. The boots, like the gloves, are clearly too loose. Big drawback: the poorly fixed glove lining.

  • Minus: zips are difficult to use

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Price complete: 967.85 euros

Recommended extras: Pinlock visor 29.95 euros, bib 49.95 euros, back protector 24.95 euros

Conclusion
The glove specialists stay just under 1000 euros, but put together a very well coordinated package. Of course the glove is from the house hero first class when it comes to grip and fit. But the touring combination also pleases with plenty of comfort and convinces above all with cleanly integrated protectors. The construction of the boots is similar to the well-known Daytona footwear. Although they do not offer their first-class comfort, they can score with a full and secure fit. The helmet is easy to wear and offers decent aerodynamics, but it takes getting used to with high volume.

  • Minus: Zippers are extremely snappy, and in a test sample, the zipper pulls out completely after pressing it twice

Conclusion
The Swiss full-service provider goes to great lengths and puts together the most expensive set in the test. Is it also true for the equivalent? At first glance, yes: Touring riders definitely get a very balanced package with matching individual parts – starting with the helmet with a snug fit and good noise insulation, through a functionally equipped station wagon and stable, grippy gloves to extremely comfortable boots. It is all the more annoying that a test boot tore out after pulling the zippers twice. That’s really embarrassing for a € 200 kicker.

Conclusion
With the complete solution from Modeka, the stable AGV flip-up helmet, blessed with a quiet interior, and the robust, robust touring boots – the latter on offer at an absolute competitive price of well under 100 euros – are particularly convincing. Light and shadow alternate when wearing a suit. On the plus side, the equipment of the textile combination scores, which can be converted into an extremely well-ventilated summer suit with a completely removable climate membrane. In practice, there is a lack of a comfortable fit, especially the protectors rub uncomfortably on the skin. The gloves without a real anti-wipe protection are an imposition.

Conclusion
Around 100 euros air to the limit and an overall well-coordinated package solution. Motoport is sending a high-quality hybrid station wagon into the race, which, thanks to the completely removable climate membrane, can be worn with an airy summer suit or in full equipment with inserted thermal lining, even on cool to cold days during the season. The whole thing is complemented by comfortable, well-fitting gloves and boots. Only the helmet doesn’t really want to keep up with the high level that suits, boots and gloves pretend: The drafty interior and high volume are particularly annoying here.

Price complete: 919.75 euros

Recommended extras: Pinlock visor 19.95 euros, functional polo underwear set 19.99 euros, back protector 10.00 euros

Conclusion
A light suit for almost year-round tours, plus sturdy, non-slip gloves and a sturdy pair of shoes. With the polo set, alpine hikers on touring motorcycles and enduros are well equipped. The Nexo flip-up helmet (identical to the Bayard from Motoport) is less convincing. Aerodynamically great, but a strong pull in the eye area and high wind noise while driving are annoying. The around 80 euros from the remaining budget can be invested sensibly in the equipment. For example, in a skin-friendly functional underwear set or a back protector, which is available for a surcharge of ten euros for the jacket.

The favorites of the testers / conclusion

Test editor Thorsten Dentges (41).

Test editor Thorsten Dentges (41) has rearranged the nine collections for extended weekend trips and trips on sporty naked bikes:

helmet IXS HX 430 Shine: 199.90 euros
Suit Held Uncover / Icano: 548.00 euros
Gloves Held Satu: 99.95 euros
Held Shaku boots: 169.95 euros

Complete price: 1017.80 euros

Well dressed from head to toe? Good. Well, I have some point deductions for my head and toe for the standard goods produced in the Far East (fit). Although I would like to praise the Ixs integral marbles and the Held touring boots in the test environment as one-eyed among the blind. There is no pressure, the seat and security are just about okay. Full points, however, for Held’s textile suit and (relatively expensive) X-trafit gloves: high comfort factor with a sporty fit, fully suitable for travel, multifunctional, neatly processed – that is first class!

Head of Service Test Jorg Lohse (43).

Service test boss Jorg Lohse (43) has put together the ideal combination for long vacation trips on a travel enduro from the 36 products:

Caberg Modus helmet: 299.90 euros
Difi Sierra Nevada Pro AX suit: 499.90 euros
Vanucci Touring 3 gloves: 89.95 euros
Difi Trail AX boots: 149.95 euros

Complete price: 1039.70 euros

I was particularly impressed by the tight fit of the textile combination from Motoport’s own brand Difi. Anyone who thinks that enduro suits have to hang in the wind like fluffy flutter men should slip into the next Motoport store in the Sierra Nevada. The Trail boots go well with this. When it comes to gloves, I don’t want to forego the feeling of being able to grasp them, even with waterproof ones – there is no regret with the Vanucci by Louis. When traveling, I appreciate the comfort of well-fitting, quiet flip-up helmets. My favorite: Caberg’s mode.

Conclusion

Not only when looking at the favorites of the testers, but also when looking at the individual evaluations of the 36 pieces of equipment, it becomes clear: It is difficult to equip yourself completely from a single source. Likewise, to keep the limit of 1000 euros. Almost every provider in the test can lure with a few pearls, but also has at least one outlier with them. From the point of view of balance, the package from Detlev Louis was particularly surprising, although viewed individually it was not really bad, but looked like wildly thrown together in the composition.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Water on the move: For five minutes, over 40 liters of finely atomized water at 80 bar from the Karcher power nozzle pelt onto every part of the equipment.

In this test, the actual practical benefits were high in the editors’ specifications. In extensive driving tests, the equipment on the Honda Crosstourer and Suzuki GSR 750 was put to the test while riding the sunny country roads of Provence near Marseille. A particularly informative stretch of road is the Col de l‘Espigoulier with its varied route profile: fast alternating curves, slow serpentines, smooth asphalt, uneven, rough roads. The driver and the motorcycle are constantly on the move, so the advantages and disadvantages of the individual items of clothing are quickly apparent. For example, if the helmet’s field of vision is too narrow, the protectors no longer fit exactly after a slight hanging-off or even press uncomfortably and have to be adjusted again or the foot slips back and forth in the boot during constant braking and shifting operations.

In order to check the bad weather protection, it went to the house test bench from Karcher to Winnenden. There, a tester had to face the pressure of 80 bar from the flat jet nozzle with each complete set for five minutes (do not imitate it at home!). Using the 40 degrees warm, demineralized water, weak points in the construction of the suits were to be found.
