Honda CBF 1000 versus Honda CBF 1000 F

Parallel to the recently introduced new Honda CBF 1000 F, the well-known and recognized good CBF without the suffix-F will remain in the range. The comparison test clarifies what distinguishes the two siblings and what they have in common.

Quality does not have to be expensive. Seldom has this well-known saying from advertising fits so well on a motorcycle as it did on the Honda CBF 1000, which was introduced in 2006 and which has now been joined by a completely renovated sister, the CBF 1000 F. The fresh lines immediately catch the eye, the cladding is based on the Fireblade. The frame, which is no longer made of steel, but of aluminum is less eye-catching. This has not – so much in advance – changed anything in the fundamental character of the CBF. Driving 1000s has rarely been more relaxed and, in a positive sense, less uneventful. Regardless of whether you are a single person or a pillion passenger, in the city, across the country or on the motorway, both CBFs cut a fine figure everywhere without being in the foreground. With sensible equipment such as the combi-ABS as well as three-way height-adjustable bench seat and adjustable windshield, new and old target the sensible clientele. The biggest shortcoming of the CB-Simple-F is the upright look and the sometimes badly functional details such as the coarse engine mounts or the somewhat sloppy-looking cockpit.

But the CBF clientele says freely after football guru Otto Rehhagel: It is important to watch your passport! And other things count here than on the promenade. Moderate tire widths, for example. With a 160 mm rear tire, you don’t get stuck in front of the ice cream parlor these days, but you are rewarded with easy handling and high neutrality. Here the new one surprises. The mounted Bridgestone BT 57 (front with special identification “U”, rear “E.”) make a slightly museum-like impression, but let the CBF-F rush through the curve radii as if drawn with a compass. In contrast, the predecessor with Dunlop Roadsmart tires looks much more nervous and wobbly and has to be kept on course with steering corrections. New and old alike make deep furrows in the asphalt with the footpegs very early on.

As usual, the CBF is passenger-friendly, although the old one has a softer upholstery. The substructure of the benches is identical, but the upholstery cannot be exchanged easily because the rubber pads are of different thicknesses. And the supposed comfort advantage turns around quickly when driving. The basic set-up of the old CBF is quite soft, on bumpy ground the shock absorber, which is acted upon by a deflection and can only be adjusted in the spring base, always works in the progressive range and likes to distribute blows.

The new one has more reserves thanks to its tighter basic set-up. The now directly hinged strut gets its progression from a suitably wound spring and its spring base and rebound damping can be adjusted. Something has also happened at the front: The spring base of the 41 mm telescopic fork can be adjusted on the new one.

The biggest difference between the sisters, besides design and frame material, cannot be seen from the outside, but is definitely noticeable when driving: the changes to the engine, the four-cylinder from the 2006 Fireblade. He got the cylinder head of the naked bike CB 1000 R. And because CBF customers rarely use the stopwatch, the original 125 HP was reduced to 107 HP in favor of more pressure in the middle of the rev range through tamer control times (a 98 HP Version is available on request). With resounding success. The foursome pulls on the chain noticeably stronger. To what extent the new four-in-one exhaust system, made entirely of stainless steel, contributes to this characteristic remains unclear. In any case, the rather bulky part is not nicer to look at than the two slim rear silencers of the predecessor. A little delicacy on the side: So that the CB-Double-F doesn’t get out of hand, the Honda engineers have placed a counterweight on the left side of the vehicle behind the footrest to balance the weight of the one-sided silencer.

But back to the engine. Where the old one noticeably struggles for air after 7000 tours at the latest, the new one keeps turning. At 6000 revolutions and above, both of them start tingling in the pleasantly cranked but somewhat narrow tubular handlebars. The drive of the old runs noticeably rougher and vibrates noticeably stronger even at lower speeds. His hour strikes with the draft. Without the significant drop in the country road-relevant area at 4500 revolutions, its qualities as a push cart would come into its own even more clearly. But even so, it is enough to cushion the new one in the draft. But it stays that way. The nine extra horsepower come into their own when accelerating as well as at top speed, with the new one limiting in fifth and sixth gears at 230 km / h. The old one is only marginally slower with an unregulated, official 228 km / h.

The shift linkage of the old CBF 1000 is deflected, which means that the gearshift is much less precise than that of the new CBF 1000 F..

Since high-speed junkies rarely use CBF anyway, this is only noted for the sake of completeness. This is not noticeable in everyday use. More like the fact that the overall ratio of the new ones was longer despite the shorter secondary ratio, so that the overall speed level is lower. Which benefits consumption. With 4.8 liters of normal, the new one consumes half a liter less per 100 kilometers. In connection with the tank, which has been enlarged to 20 liters, the theoretical range increases from just under 360 to a good 410 kilometers. These are distances after which even non-smokers are not averse to a break. The driver dismounts from both CBFs in a relaxed manner, the ergonomics of the two siblings are almost identical and very comfortable for both driver and front passenger. The front seat cushion can be repositioned in three heights here and there by simply repositioning the seat, whereby the new one is always five millimeters lower thanks to a tighter and thinner cushion.

Nobody will do the windscreen adjustment of the old people twice. A screwdriver, at least two hands, and a lot of patience are required to adjust the shield. The new one is much more user-friendly. Grabbed the pane on the right and left with both hands and pull it hard, and it starts moving. Honda speaks of a total of four positions, in practice the adjustment is so difficult that the disc remains in any position.

Another detail shows that not everything was thought through to the end, even at Honda. In the right display of the cockpit, which is much nicer to look at, there is not only the tank content, odometer, two trip counters, current and average fuel consumption, but also a display that shows the amount of fuel used since the last refueling. Friends of mental arithmetic will find a nice field of activity here, everyone else would like two or three more lines of program and thus information about how much distance can still be covered with the remaining amount of fuel. At the moment, only one lamp issues a warning when its end is near.

Until then, one or the other braking point will definitely be approaching. And here, too, the new can stage itself. The combi-ABS is now standard, the front three-piston floating calipers are identical. At the back, the old one also has a floating caliper with three pistons, the new one gets by with one. When you step on the pedal, the new one brakes much more strongly at the front than the old one, so that reaching for the adjustable hand lever that only acts at the front is rarely necessary. It remains to be seen whether that will be enough to slow down the old woman. The bottom line is that what I said at the beginning also applies to the new one: Good doesn’t have to be expensive.

A picture like in real life: the old one follows the new one, but stays close.

Honda has put a lot of effort into making the new CBF 1000 F even better. That was quite successful. In terms of neutrality, braking stability and sportiness, it is superior to the still good old ones. Especially visually, it is in a different league. The market will decide whether this justifies a surcharge of almost 1000 euros.
