Driving report, Moto Guzzi Nevada 750
Mako Shark Panther
I can see the body. But: I lack faith – or: some bodies make other promises than they can deliver.
The idea is good. Because why does a chopper always have to look like a Harley copy? Why shouldn’t a chopper combine a relaxed sitting posture and “easy riding” with a completely unfamiliar and unexpected eye-catcher? And the one transformed into a »panther« by the Italian motorcycle couturier Mako Shark is an absolute eye-catcher M.oto Guzzi V 75 Nevada sure – taste or not. The Nevada, a 49 hp chopper enriched with a few Vmax reminiscences, is at the German Moto Guzzi importer A.&G currently with 12,255 marks in the offer list. But the somewhat outdated macho number hardly attracts a few dozen Guzzi friends every year to unlock their wallets. That could be different with the Mako Shark Panther – if you extrapolate the astonishing interest that motorcyclists showed in the Panthers during the MOTORCYCLE test drives . This will please Hans-Joachim Stuhlmuller, who has taken over the import of the converted Guzzi Nevada with his two-wheeler shop in Eppingen-Richen, near Sinsheim / Baden-Wurttemberg. The technical basis of the Panther is in order. The two-valve, 744 cubic centimeter Nevada engine has enough power and thump, and its reliability is today a class higher than in earlier models of the “small” Moto Guzzi series. The chassis is surprisingly manageable for a chopper, but it is still directionally stable, and the suspension elements and brakes even allow a comfortable, sporty driving style for this category of motorcycle. So far so good. But the Mako Shark Panther wants to be more than a chopper after all. And there is still a lot stuck at the Guzzi / Panther interface. It starts with the fact that the Panther cannot hold the fuel on the side stand. The carburetor float chambers overflow because the motorcycle is tilted too much. Turning off the petrol tap can help, but first you have to be able to grip it in the badly placed grip hole in the panel. The fit and processing quality also leaves something to be desired in other areas. Well, the Panther that is being driven is the first model in Germany. But every motorcycle that is supposed to attract glances with dignified root wood inlays, leather, custom paint and carbon fiber parts, will receive a few crooked looks if all surface parts are crooked, flap locks fall out while driving, no aperture radius is the same, leather stitching pulls threads , Grips slip off the handlebars while driving and carbon fiber parts bubble like a bubble bath. So the price of 24,000 marks is difficult to justify. Again, it is good that the sitting posture is surprisingly comfortable, the knee joint is nice and narrow and the seat is very low. But an engine that is too lean in the lower partial load range and chokes when you accelerate, a side stand that leverages the motorcycle when driving even in the mildest lean angles, too low-set rear-view mirrors that are useless because 90 percent of them are only those Showing the driver’s knees, and a strangely upward cranked handlebar that twists your wrists would have been easy to avoid with a little care from the Italian manufacturer Mako Shark. Stuhlmuller now wants to remove the rearview mirrors and replace them with speakers. Normal rear-view mirrors then give real consideration, and a CD radio in the glove compartment should pass the driver’s time through the boxes. When it comes to the remaining points of criticism, importer Stuhlmuller is not to be envied: He has the ungrateful task of making it clear to Mako Shark that their ideas are good – but that a good idea alone is not enough.
