Electric motorcycles in police use: Osnabruck draws a positive balance

Osnabruck draws a positive balance
Two Zero DS ZF 14.4 electric motorcycles have been pushing police officers in Osnabruck since October 2018. Now, after three months, the police authority drew a positive balance.

On October 18, 2018, the two zero DS ZF put into service, replacing two BMW R1200 RT. The Zero models produce 60 HP (45 KW), reach a top speed of 158 km / h and accelerate from zero to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds. The range in urban areas is 250 km – with an additional power tank even 328 km. In addition, according to the police, the Zero models are around 100 kg lighter than the BMW, which is a clear advantage for operation in the city. Handling when maneuvering or pushing backwards is much easier.
The police-specific equipment was designed by the police authority and includes the LED blue light system and the horn, front and LED rear flashers and LED stop signaling devices at the front and rear. In particular, an innovative radio concept could be developed. Among other things, it enables the driver to move away from his motorcycle thanks to a Bluetooth interface without losing radio contact. This is of great importance, for example, at traffic controls. Operation via the steering wheel at the push of a button is also possible without any problems. The e-motorcycle can be charged via the internal charger (8-9 hours) or via an external quick charger (50 minutes).
Electric motorcycles are more economical
The Osnabruck police rate the economy positively. All in all, the “e-motorcycle” is cheaper than other police motorcycles. The costs for the Zero electric motorcycle are around 25,000 euros and thus 3,800 euros less than the previous police motorcycles. There are no maintenance costs for e-bikes, as these are not mandatory. Apart from the brake fluid, no operating fluids such as engine oils are required. Furthermore, spark plugs, air filters and fuel filters, which cause costs, are no longer necessary.
The first electric off-road motorcycle as an enduro version for the Osnabruck Police Department has been in successful use on the island of Borkum since May 2017 and is already an integral part of police work on the island. With the e-motorcycle, the deployed officers are able to quickly reach the locations in the rough terrain, in particular. The impact on the environment and tourists can be kept very low with the new resource.
The vehicle fleet should become more sustainable
The police fleet in Lower Saxony currently comprises around 4,300 vehicles, 43 of which are purely battery-electric and 44 are partially electrically powered. In addition, around 20 pedelecs are used on a daily basis across the country. The “AIR” procurement project, which started in May 2018, is intended to triple the number of e-vehicles used by the police in the next two years. The aim is to procure up to 185 more electric vehicles and the necessary charging infrastructure. This project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport with approx. 2.4 million euros as part of the immediate “Clean Air” program, aims specifically at improving the air quality in polluted cities in Lower Saxony.
