Instead of heating wires, the warmers contain a hybrid fabric made of carbon fiber and aramid. The mats should warm the tires over a large area, evenly and without temperature peaks. The thermal paper imprint clearly shows the large-area warming behavior.

Some do it without. Way too dangerous! Something could go wrong. With the well-known consequences: first bang, then doctor, then big whining. Therefore, it is essential to pull over before the action! So it’s definitely safer. That is why tire warmers are part of the basic equipment at every race track break.

In the meantime this market has become very confusing. In our research we counted 14 suppliers, some of whom have several variants in their range. In order not to go beyond the scope of this comparison, our test specification was: Price limit 450 euros, one item per provider. Racefoxx is the exception. As a representative, we ordered two sets of a similar type from the Remscheid-based company. The first is freely adjustable up to a target temperature of 99 degrees, the second offers two preset temperatures (60/80 degrees). What are the differences when it comes to heating? Because we also wanted to know what constitutes high-priced products, we ordered tire warmers from two companies that are also used in MotoGP. In stark contrast, we checked the parts of a colleague who shot them for $ 120 straight from China over the Internet a few years ago. These three electric blankets (see “Tire warmers without test rating”) run out of competition.

Ten out of 14 providers made it into the test

Of the 14 providers, ten ultimately made it into the comparison test. One company was not interested in participating (Biketek). Another did not even respond to our request (IRC). In addition, the tire warmers from the Polo branch chain are currently not available. It was tragic for the Renngrib “Superbike Radial”. When it heated up, the toggle switch for changing the temperature came out of its seat. The plug connection then also disconnected and the cables were exposed inside the seat. With the result that the ceiling no longer heated. Shortly after we reconnected the cables, the plug came off again: test aborted, exclusion!

With the technically almost identical tire warmers from Hein Gericke (Pro Sports 3D) and Constands (Black Superbike) threaten the same scenario. We have therefore devalued them accordingly. In addition to the warm-up behavior, the candidates had to undergo three other tests: fit, equipment / processing, handling. What was noticed in the individual categories? On which it depends? Here is a brief overview.

Warm-up behavior

When it comes to heating up the tires, the candidates differ greatly. The best warmers caught up with the reference product from MotoGP, and one of them even outbid it. The devalued electric blankets from Constands and Hein Gericke also showed excellent warm-up behavior. All the more regrettable the toggle switch lapse. Others heated up the tire comparatively slowly, but passed the magic mark of 70 degrees after 60 minutes. Just the electric blanket from Louis did not make this hurdle, point deduction. Most manufacturers agree on the target temperature and do not propagate a value below 80 degrees. But how high should the tire temperature ideally be? Which value should the rubber not exceed or fall below (see “That’s how the test went”)? A diagram illustrates how the individual candidates fare in comparison to the reference (see picture gallery). In addition, a thermal paper print shows how the heating wires (“heating conductors”) run within the ceiling.

Seven out of eleven tire warmers work with coarse loops and wire spacing of 30 millimeters. In the “Radial XXL” from HSR, the strands are even 40 millimeters apart. Wires running close together are more gentle on the tire. You need lower temperature peaks and warm the rubber more evenly. At the parts of Capit, TTSL and motorcycle racing green, the heating conductors are closer together – very nice! The front runner, however, is KLS “Sport”. The distance between the wires is only eight millimeters. In most tire warmers, small light-emitting diodes indicate the warm-up process. Some models work with two different colors (red and green). Sometimes their lights glow deceptively green after a relatively short time (less than half an hour), although the target temperature has not yet been reached. Therefore, under no circumstances should the tires be fully loaded at this point! The rubber only warms up completely after about an hour.

Fit

Only a tire warmer that is as wrinkle-free and tightly fitting as possible ensures contact with the rubber and thus ideal heat transfer. They nestle particularly tightly KLS Sport and the Warmer of Motorcycle Racing Green. The latter, however, works with cords, which have to be laboriously re-lashed each time it is hung up. The Q-Racing and TTSL electric blankets have wide elastic bands on the sides, which means that the blankets also fit neatly. The other brands have small to medium wrinkles.

Elastic bands sewn into the flanks should guarantee a good fit – more or less successfully. Sometimes these products are one-size-fits-all that have to cover several tire dimensions. None of these tire warmers really failed in this exercise. However, special models adapted to the various tire dimensions are always more suitable. Good brands have different sizes in their range.

Processing / equipment

Nothing sums up this criterion like the winged English sentence “What you pay is what you get”. Loosely translated means: decent quality costs money! If you don’t want to shell out more than 130 euros for a set of electric blankets, you shouldn’t be surprised at careless workmanship. Above all, cheap products from China stand out negatively, as the aforementioned loose toggle switch or the limited warm-up performance of the Louis blanket clearly show. Unclean seams or edges with asymmetrical shapes are also evidence of a careless finish.

However, affordable high-quality goods also come from the Far East, such as electric blankets from Racefoxx or Q-Racing impressively prove. In addition to the workmanship, we also paid attention to the equipment when awarding points. We deducted a counter for missing operating instructions or those written in a foreign language. The detailed user information from Louis and Motorrad Racing Grun is exemplary. We penalized models without adjustable target temperatures with two points deduction.

What is Nomex?

Here’s a quick word about Nomex. This term is a special flame-retardant fiber that is also used in firefighter clothing. Most manufacturers use Nomex on the inside as a protective layer between the heating wire and the tire. On some bikes, the exhaust or collector just bypasses the rear wheel (example: Ducati
Panigale).

With these machines, it is best to use products in which the special fiber is also used as an outer shell. Otherwise the tire warmer could be damaged. However, this service is only offered by the expensive models that were not competitive in this test for a corresponding surcharge.

handling

How easy is it to attach the overcoats? How easy to fix? There are also some major differences in this criterion. The KLS Sport’s frame, which is pre-bent into the shape of a tire, is ingenious. Simply put it on the tire, no further fixing with the usual Velcro straps is necessary. After opening, just attach the flap to the overlap – done. As already described, this exercise is much more cumbersome in the only model with drawstrings. The other electric blankets form the golden mean and can easily be slipped over. Only with the TTSL warmer are the comparatively small Velcro fasteners on the side below the flanks. Since this part is heavily used when closing, we would like a little more Velcro there.

However, we have greater concerns with deep-seated front fenders such as the Panigale. The electric blankets could only be pulled through with a lot of force, which can damage the warmer and / or the fender over time. In these cases, it is better to set the fender a little higher using the elongated holes. Personal injuries are more serious. To avoid them, always remember: Put on an overcoat before the action! Otherwise you could catch something.

Capit Suprema Spina

Capit Suprema Spina.

Contact: Tech Moto, 04425 Taucha, Tel: 03 41/39 28 18 29-0, www.techmoto.de

Price per set: 357 euros

Country of Manufacture: Italy

Material outside: polyester

Material inside: flame retardant polyester

Temperature adjustable: no

Length of the supply lines: 1.55 meters

Accessories / other: detailed operating instructions, carrying bag with handle and viewing window, available in numerous colors, printing possible (from 60 euros)

Points: 79

Grade: good – satisfactory

Conclusion: The Italian electric blankets were the only tire warmers in the test to have water-resistant Teflon wires. Which prompts the manufacturer to present the blankets in an aquarium at trade fairs. At first the material feels a bit bulky, but it should settle after a few heating processes. The very well processed Spina warms up the tires comparatively slowly but consistently. Only after 60 minutes does the rubber reach the maximum temperature of a very good 78 degrees.

Contact: Motea, 51674 Wiehl, Tel: 02 26 2/9 99 20, www.motea.com

Price per set: 174.99 euros

Country of Manufacture: China

Material outside: Oxford cotton

Material inside: Nomex

Temperature adjustable: switchable (60/80 degrees)

Length of the supply lines: 1.50 meters

Accessories / other: English operating instructions, carrying bag with handle, available in several colors, printing not possible

Points: 75

Grade: sufficient*

Conclusion: Light and shadow are close together in this tire warmer. An excellent heating behavior contrasts with a sometimes careless processing: The toggle switch for heat regulation can be easily released from its seat. This means that the plug connections can also loosen and current-carrying cables are exposed – this is what happens with a competitor product of the same construction. In the best case scenario, the ceiling will not heat up; in the worst case scenario, there will be a short circuit or electric shock.

Length of the supply lines: 1.50 meters

Accessories / other: English operating instructions, carrying bag with handle, only available in the color combination shown (black / red / yellow), printing not possible

Points: 77

Grade: sufficient*

Conclusion: For the technically almost identical tire warmers from Hein Gericke, the same statement applies as for the parts from Constands: excellent warming up of tires and rims – the heating output is even slightly better and gets the maximum number of points – but there are defects in the processing of the heat control switch . That is a shame, because apart from that, the HG ceilings offer a lot of value for the money. The finish was a bit sloppy.

Material inside: Nomex

Temperature adjustable: no

Length of the supply lines: 1.82 meters

Accessories / other: very short instruction manual, pouch with lace fastener, temperature display for an extra charge (25 euros), printing of name and start number free of charge

Points: 83

Grade: Good

Conclusion: Probably because of a misunderstanding, HSR sent the XXL version of the rear electric blanket. As a result, it sits a little loosely on the 5.5-inch test rim. As a trial, we also put the part on a 6-inch wheel with a 200 mm silt, but even there it is not particularly tight. Except for a somewhat leisurely increase in temperature, the warm-up works fine, the value after an hour is 82 degrees. The properly processed tire warmers are pleasantly light and easy to use.

Length of the supply lines: 1.75 meters

Accessories / miscellaneous: high-quality carrier bag with handle and Velcro fastener, no operating instructions, printing not possible, only available in black

Points: 88

Grade: very good good

Conclusion: The KLS Sport is superbly crafted, has a great, close-fitting fit and is child’s play to open thanks to a preformed frame (see page 55). In terms of the warm-up time, it ranks in the good middle field, the maximum temperature is 75 degrees. With better values in this criterion, he would be sure to win the test, so the electric blankets land on a still very good second place. In terms of price, the sport made in Germany is at the upper end of the price range.

Louis Racing

Material inside: Nomex

Temperature adjustable: no

Length of the supply lines: 1.72 meters

Accessories / other: Operating instructions, small plastic case, only available in red / black, printing not possible

Points: 63

Grade: sufficient

Conclusion: Especially when it comes to warming up behavior, the cheapest tire warmer at around 130 euros weakens in the test. Racing heats up the tires quickly in the beginning, but with a maximum temperature of 67 degrees it misses the 70 degree mark – point deduction! Except for the lack of temperature control, it corresponds in structure, materials and workmanship to the parts from Constands and Hein Gericke. It is very likely that it is the same manufacturer. The slight folds in the fit are bearable in this price range.

Conclusion: At the absolute competitive price of 159 euros, Motorrad Racing Grun is offering the superbike. The heating performance is enormous and even exceeds our reference product – full points! In addition, it is very cleanly processed and also shines in terms of fit. The catch: Instead of elastic bands on the sides, the manufacturer works with simple cords that have to be re-lashed and adjusted to the shape of the tire each time it is put on. If that doesn’t frighten you, you get an absolute top product for little money.

On three identical 5.5-inch rims of the Triumph Street Triple and Daytona 675, we put Bridgestone V01 slicks in the dimension 190/650 on. Within an hour of warming up, we checked the tire temperatures at fixed intervals seven times in nine different places (six times on the flank, three times in the middle). According to Adam Riese, makes 63 measurements per tire warmer. We averaged the values from each measurement cycle, and a spreadsheet program created a curve from them. We also determined the rim temperature for each cycle. It is an important indicator of how intensively the rubber has been warmed through. The “Pro-X TCU” from KLS served as a reference tire warmer. The extremely expensive part is also used in MotoGP.

We started all measurements at tire and rim temperatures between 24 and 28 degrees (room temperature). Results may vary at cooler initial temperatures. We decreased the temperatures on the tire surface. Measurements with a penetration thermometer are more meaningful. They determine the temperature inside the rubber (between three and seven millimeters deep). Especially if the rubber is not yet completely warmed through, the inside and outside values can differ greatly from each other. Tire manufacturers and professional racing teams work with such measuring devices. However, the comparability within the test is also given in absolute terms with the surface temperature.

KLS Pro-X TCU

KLS Pro-X TCU.

The “Pro-X TCU” from KLS was used as a reference in this test and is not included in the rating. This professional warmer, which costs almost 1300 euros, is used, for example, by the Honda works team with drivers Marc Márquez and Dani Pedrosa in MotoGP. The temperature control unit TCU (Temperature Control Unit) can be used to preset two different values of up to 120 degrees. For a better comparison, however, we chose a target temperature of 80 degrees. Instead of heating wires, the warmers contain a hybrid fabric made of carbon fiber and aramid. The mats should warm the tires over a large area, evenly and without temperature peaks. The thermal paper imprint (middle photo) clearly shows the large-area warming behavior. Also noticeable: the flanks are preheated more than the center of the tire. “That is on purpose,” explains KLS maker Tobias Leonhardt. “If there is not enough time to warm up the tires completely, the flanks will have higher temperatures, which can prevent a take-off.” The blankets also heat up very quickly. In our tests, the tire surface was already 75 degrees after 25 minutes, the rim temperature was 38 degrees. After all, four test candidates achieved similar or even better values. Since the electric blankets were not available at the time of the test, the TGP Moto company kindly helped
Racing out – thank you again for that.

CAPIT Suprema Vision.

Many teams also use the “Suprema Vision” from Capit in the highest international racing classes such as MotoGP or the Superbike World Championship. Price: around 820 euros. This electric blanket also runs out of competition. Their specialty according to the manufacturer: robust and absolutely waterproof Teflon wires. “I have already presented the tire warmers in an aquarium at trade fairs,” says sales manager Martin Lochmann with a satisfied smile. The test candidate “Suprema Spina”, which is significantly cheaper at 357 euros, also works with this technology. The thermal impressions of both versions are identical (see product box on page 54) and show a uniform warm-up image. A key difference between Spina and Vision: In the cheaper Spina, the target temperature is fixed at around 85 degrees, while the Vision is freely adjustable up to 110 degrees. In addition, the Vision – like the KLS competitor product – is available with a flame-retardant outer shell made of Nomex. There is also no rating for the third tire warmer in the group (without photo). This involves a colleague’s own import at a Chinese company via the Internet. Price four years ago: $ 120. The part delivered passable values in the warm-up test. After just 25 minutes, it heated the tire surface to the maximum temperature of 72 degrees. However, the rim temperature only reached its maximum value (41 degrees) after almost 50 minutes. Those who like to experiment have a look on the Internet at www.xp-motor.com
