We are talking about paint scratch removers, which usually only differ from common polishes in the larger amount of abrasive components (abrasives). Even deep scratches should be able to be dealt with without too much manual skill and at the end of the polishing procedure the annoying notch should be almost invisibly removed.

So flowery promises, which MOTORRAD, together with its sister journal auto motor und sport and the paint specialists from the testing organization GTu (Society for Technical Monitoring), took a closer look at the polishing ground. The supposed miracle cure can be obtained in most automotive accessory stores and hardware stores, but it’s even more convenient via online trading, and a large number of the test samples were bought from Amazon, Westfalia, Tirendo and Conrad.
But before the order button is clicked, the scratch-damaged person should realistically assess his or her manual dexterity and polishing experience, because there are two product groups that are aimed at users with different levels of training: one-component and two-component products.

Before we get to the differences, a few basic words about scratch removal per se: All polishes remove scratches in the paint layer by removing paint. A process that cannot be reversed without a great deal of effort (read: repainting). So if you overdo it with the application, you can turn a small scratch into really expensive paintwork damage, against which even the best scratch remover is powerless. The chances of actually undoing a scratch increase enormously if only the clearcoat layer covering the actual color lacquer is affected. The crux of the matter: Exactly this layer is usually not much thicker than a tenth of a millimeter. So the probability of removing a little too much of it is not that small. Especially with a two-component product, such as from Sonax, Quixx and Presto.
The “problem” is not the pre- and post-treatment agents, but the sandpaper. Although this is very fine and may only be used with water, it still causes annoyance when used with gross motor skills. These products are therefore more for experienced users, which also applies to the so-called grinding pastes.
Inexperienced people are usually better served with one-component products, so the risk of incorrect use is significantly lower. For example, the abrasives of the Wack and Westfalia products are designed in such a way that they disintegrate during use and you have to show a good portion of total inability to do something wrong with it. It may take a little longer to work with the tools for polishing beginners, but their performance is not much worse than the products for experienced users. But regardless of whether you choose a one- or two-component product, an old wisdom about care products does not apply for once, because much does not help much here. Better to let it come slowly and in peace.

The products were bought in the free (online) trade. A three-year-old metallic paint served as the test substrate, on which the GTu experts analyzed the gloss haze before and after the test and measured the degree of gloss and paint thickness. The precisely defined scratches (one weak and one deep in the clear coat) were created by special equipment. Microfiber cloths were used as cloths, unless the providers stipulated otherwise. In addition to the scratch remover performance, scope of delivery, productivity and operating instructions were also rated. The grading also included how easy the product is to process, how much time it takes and how expensive the product is.
The judgments were given according to the following table: 150 to 140 points: highly recommended, 139 to 110 points: recommendable, 109 to 60 points: conditionally recommended, 59 to 0 points: not recommended.
