“We see the fact that a breakdown could lurk around every bend and that the number of necessary repairs is probably the same as the number of mosquitoes in Siberia is less a problem than a potential of this trip.”

“We will definitely meet people who may initially think our travel concept is absurd. Nevertheless, we believe that most of them will still help us. That they let themselves be carried away by our enthusiasm and thus become part and focus of the whole project.”

Movie tip. Started in September 2014, Anne, Elisabeth, Efi, Kaupo and Johannes from Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, drove around the world with four Ural teams in two and a half years: “Overland to New York”, That is the title of the project – 43,000 kilometers, 1,600 of them on a river in the Far East, an average of 35 kilometers a day, accompanied by 972 breakdowns. This has now resulted in the film “972 breakdowns”, which will be shown from August 19 as part of a film tour in which the troupe – or parts of them – will be present in the cinema (locations, dates, tickets under leavinghomeffunktion.com/film).

Drastic, hilarious and never posed

Runs from September 3rd “972 breakdowns” then nationwide in the cinema. The film shows in partly drastic, partly hilarious, partly bizarre but always unstated authentic pictures the normal madness of this trip with old Russian motorcycles. The simple technology of the Urals has proven to be a curse and a blessing at the same time: constantly bent connecting rods, crumbled pistons or sheared transmission gears – but especially in the vastness of Russia everything can be repaired with the help of locals and sometimes just a hammer.

We have been reporting on the world tour since 2014:

Her journey seemed completely crazy at the beginning. And that hasn’t really changed until now. It went through the vastness of Russia, over the Bering Strait to Canada, and from there through the USA.

Buoyant Ural teams

In 2016 they reached Far East Asia. In the Canadian winter quarters, the five intrepid travelers made their teams buoyant, using them to sail from Magadan down the Kolyma River 1,600 kilometers through Far East Asia to the North American continent. Completely gaga, but it worked: the teams on floating pontoons, lengthening the cardan and converting it into a propeller drive.

The teams were made buoyant and sailed from Magadan down the Kolyma River 1,600 kilometers through Far East Asia to the North American continent.

So they were on the Kolyma, one of the longest rivers in the Far East. Goal: 1,600 kilometers downstream in a northeasterly direction to the East Siberian Sea. From there it was another 2,000 kilometers overland to the Bering Sea. Then over to Anchorage, Alaska, from where New York was only a short hop. The problem: the money reserves were running out. Therefore, the troop started a crowdfunding campaign that made the onward journey possible.

Conclusion

The 110-minute runtime of the film, which was created by cell phone cameras and drone recordings, is already dirty fingernails just looking at it, but it is also incredibly fun. It shows dust and exertion that make you shudder and it shows a troupe that nothing can stop with a mixture of naivety, will and fantasy. Great animated drawings announce what’s going to break next and the fantastic soundtrack produced especially for the film rounds off the whole thing. Very, very worth seeing!
