The original brake pads are very expensive (approx. 150 euros). Good alternatives to swap are the sintered metal pads from Brembo (approx. 80 euros) and Lucas (approx. 70 euros) with good responsiveness.

Classic in the HU test: Defects in the lighting system. On the left below the speedometer is a lever for headlight range adjustment, behind it the hexagon screw for adjusting the light cone.

Replace wear parts, increase comfort

The BMW R 1200 GS is almost perfect ex works. But at some point you have to lend a hand. To replace wearing parts or to increase comfort. Tips for the travel enduro.

The BMW R 1200 GS is a real screwdriver motorcycle. Not that you have to lend a hand to it. But it already works perfectly because of its technical architecture. Even more complex work, such as adjusting the valves, is quite easy compared to some nested inline four-cylinder units.

Furthermore, the extensive range of accessories makes things very easy. The market place is richly filled. Above all, the well-known BMW specialists such as AC Schnitzer, Boxer-Design, Hornig, Touratech or Wunderlich, but also large chain stores such as Detlev Louis or Polo, can score with an extensive range of parts. Our most important recommendation for do-it-yourself screwdrivers: the repair instructions for the BMW R 1200 GS from Bucheli-Verlag (volume 5266, 24.90 euros).

tire

One of the most successful tuning measures is and remains the change to new, contemporary tires. For drivers of the BMW R 1200 GS who are mainly on the road, we recommend the so-called on / off-road tires, which are primarily designed for road comfort, shine with good wet driving properties and – important for those who eat kilometers – offer high mileage. One of the most compelling new releases this year is the Metzeler Tourance Next, which offers the best mix for long-distance country road drivers. Anyone who swears by brisk curve wagging should go to Dunlop Trailmax TR 91 grip, but must expect high wear. For real off-road drivers, the Contis TKC 80 remains the best choice.

landing gear

There is little to complain about on the standard strut with hydraulic adjustment. But even this gnaws at the mileage, and after 50,000 kilometers at the latest, a thorough overhaul makes sense, which is offered, for example, by chassis specialists such as HH Racetech. When replacing the rear central spring strut, you can choose from a wide range for the BMW R 1200 GS. Tips: the tightly coordinated, but very sensitive Ohlins (895 euros) or, as an inexpensive alternative, the Touratech Suspension, which is available in three versions from 529 euros. Interesting exchange system for ESA drivers: the EDS II system from WP Suspension (1799 euros).

Comfort

Not all GS riders are convinced by the original windshield: Despite the multiple adjustment options, taller riders in particular complain of sometimes severe turbulence. With an unpleasant side effect that the volume increases considerably under the helmet. Here, too, there is a wide range for exchange. Those who value particularly sophisticated wind protection should get the Xtreme windshield from Whimsical (179 euros) or mount the V-Stream windshield from ZTechnik in XXL format (via Hornig, 229 euros). Has the seat cushion on the BMW R 1200 GS been worn out? At Jungbluth, the driver’s seat is upholstered for 210 euros.

Exhaust

Gone are the days when a significant increase in engine performance could be expected simply by repotting. On the one hand, the legal requirements for an exhaust system homologated according to European law – z. B. the driving noise of 80 dB (A) – too sharp. And on the other hand, motorcycles are already delivered with a very sophisticated mapping – which is more susceptible to changes in the engine peripherals. For suppliers of universal mufflers, whose main development work is limited to adapting a connecting pipe, the result on the roller test bench looks correspondingly poor: performance reductions of up to eight percent compared to the original are not uncommon. Well-coordinated accessory pots not only tickle out a few extra horsepower, but also push the power delivery in the middle speed range – which can really be felt on the country road. Our buying tips for the BMW R 1200 GS: Hadch with a full sound (548 euros), the high-horsepower Leovince (439 euros) and the powerful SR Racing muffler (660.66 euros).
