After 35 years in the motorcycle business, Giuseppe Visenzi’s balance sheet couldn’t be more positive: “I spent the best years of my life in the motorcycle world. And that with complete dedication. ”That was the impressive statement made by the 72-year-old Italian at the company anniversary celebration with his employees, importers and dealers from all over the world. Even today, the motorcycle is the vehicle for the Givi boss, “which inspires dreams, brings freedom and touches emotions”.

Visenzi’s passion for motorcycles grabbed him early on. When he was 15, he borrowed a little Laverda. Without the owner’s knowledge, the teenager entered his first motorcycle race, the Modena Cadet Championship. Now he was finally infected. Visenzi started at national championships in Italy, then he rose. Visenzi contested his first world championship race in 1962 in the 125cc class at the Belgian Grand Prix on Ducati. This was followed by races on his Bultaco TSS 250 in the 250cc class and finally, in 1967, he was promoted to the 350cc premier class, where he dueled with greats like Giacomo Agostini. His best result: third in the 350 World Championship behind Agostini and Silvio Grassetti in 1969 on a Yamaha.

Already in these days as a partner: his wife Wilhelmina. Together they decide to get into the motorcycle business after his last race at the Italian Grand Prix in 1970. But it is not enough for Visenzi to just sell motorcycles in his home town of Brescia. Forty years ago, practical accessories were in great demand. However, this was still neglected by motorcycle manufacturers and was generally much more difficult to come by than it is today.

A completely new business model for Giuseppe Visenzi is to develop from the individual customer inquiries: In 1978 he begins series production of motorcycle accessories. The first products: crash bars for the engine, fairing parts, luggage systems. The latter eventually become the flagship of the young Givi brand, whose name is made up of the first and last name of the company boss.

In 1983, after a four-year development period, the first Givi case with the name E 34 comes onto the market, with the indicator for the capacity in liters. And a second term also shaped Givi during this time: Monokey as the name for the patented luggage locking system with only one key – meanwhile a registered trademark of the northern Italian company.

If you visit the company headquarters in Flero in Lombardy near Brescia today, you will find a modern, bright building in which, among other things, product development, training rooms for employee training, showrooms for dealers and various research facilities are housed. A centerpiece is the test laboratory for motorcycle helmets that Givi has been manufacturing since 2002. The production facilities for jet, full-face and flip-up helmets as well as suitcases and carrier systems are located in the immediate vicinity of Flero in the province of Brescia. There are also large warehouses for worldwide shipping. 120 people are employed at the headquarters in Italy.

Not only is the vertical range of manufacture up to the production of the smallest components astonishing. The most modern, computer-controlled spark milling machines are used to manufacture all the tools and molds required for fully automated box construction. Robot-controlled gripper arms, edging and welding machines bring luggage racks, crash bars or the new “Trekker” aluminum case series into shape.

Over 400 people now work for the company worldwide. Givi is represented with its own branches in important core markets such as Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain and the USA. Importers sell the products worldwide “Made in Italy” in over 40 countries, the annual turnover is around 64 million euros. Guiseppe Visenzi, born in 1941, is still at the helm of his family business with his wife Wilhelmina, now supported by his children Hendrika and Vincenzo, who are in charge of marketing and development at the headquarters in Flero.

Even after this – second – success story, the ex-racing driver still does not like to hear the drum roll surrounding himself. Nevertheless, the Givi team insisted on asking the percussionist and drummer Leonardo Di Angilla to come onto the stage in honor of the boss at the birthday dinner. And that showed quite impressively that you can not only stow properly luggage in Giuseppe Visenzi’s suitcases.
