Awesome part: the hand-stamped aluminum sheet cover of this heavy BMW R 1200 R from the “Factory Class” is reminiscent of fighter planes from the Second World War.

Bizarre: BMW S 1000 “Double R” as a slightly different super sports car. It just fits better on Glemseck 101.

Glemseck 101 (2018)
The 13th round
Content of
Every year on the first weekend in September, Glemseck 101 forms the most colorful and largest open-brand motorcycle meeting in Germany. Its charisma continues to grow, even if Petrus only played a limited role in 2018, the 13th edition …
Slawomir Niewrzol, Thomas Schmieder
04.09.2018
It’s THE multi-culture of the motorcycle scene: whether 50s Kreidler or Boss Hoss with a thick V8, crispy and shiny cafe racer or heavily tuned sprint monster, tourer that has traveled around the world or lavishly converted noble Harley, Glemseck 101 actually has 101 nothing that doesn’t exist. Except for bad weather – almost always since 2006 the sky over Leonberg has been blue and white. This was only partially true this year. On Friday morning, dark rain clouds were already unloading their damp cargo. Participants and guests set up stands and tents in the pouring rain. However, that didn’t detract from the mood: there was a heavy party on Friday evening.
It roars, rattles, trembles and lives
Amazement is inevitable at this fair for motorcyclists, there are interesting encounters on every corner. You will see license plates from all over Europe, to Denmark and Russia, Hungary and Portugal. Somewhere in the entrance area, seen from the Hadersbach curve, is supposed to be a Moto Guzzi V7 from the late 60s / early 70s, equipped with a Czech Tatra V8 engine. Everything is possible here. It roars, rattles, trembles and lives, growls and rattles at all corners of the former GP track at the gates of Stuttgart. Hardly anyone can get through, so many people and motorbikes are united here.
Erica Barraza Torres
First public roll-out: the 100 hp Indian FTR 1200 flat tracker in Leonberg.
In theory, anyone can do anything with anyone, the old hand with the beginner, the cowl wearer with the long-distance traveler, the cool cafe racer with the rocker. De facto, of course, there is group formation, that’s just how people are. In the evenings, people who have known each other from previous years and who have been looking forward to each other for a long time usually celebrate at the individual tents. For example because they compete against each other in a number of sprint classes. Because from Saturday noon the engines will be roaring again, and it will be down to business in various classes over the eighth mile.
Colorfully mixed field of participants
It’s colorful here, really crazy. And that doesn’t just mean the profile of the rear tires (preferably slicks), which are brought to operating temperature with hearty burnouts before the sprint man against man or woman against man. The well-known TV presenter and YouTuber Jens Kuck starts on a hot Yamaha XSR 700 “Sakura” (in German: cherry blossom) against Rolf Reick from Krautmotors. Don’t forget: Jens “Kapt’n Kuck” was an active racing driver. He knows how to operate the throttle and clutch correctly. FUEL front man Rolf Henniges sits on the prototype of an Indian FTR 1200. Even before the international trade fairs in Cologne and Milan, the Americans roll up here for their first public test drive.
Erica Barraza Torres
The Triumph Thruxton built by Mellow Motorcycles was driven by Arne Tode.
It’s not an easy task to keep a light flat tracker with well over 100 hp in check. Rolf Henniges is really good at wheelies. But here he has trouble getting to grips with the balance between spinning rear wheel and lifting front wheel. Without training, straight into the race. In the knockout system there is a risk, whoever loses his run is usually outside – only sometimes “losers” are allowed to try again. The “Sultans of Sprint” is pure carnival: loud, colorful, flashy – with colorful costumes of the team members, drivers in imaginative dress on absolutely crazy machines. Creativity on Wheels. Turbochargers, laughing gas or flamethrowers are more the rule than the exception. Armament here is in full swing.
Mick Doohan is also there
The sympathetic-friendly racing driver and horsepower employee Arne Tode starts on a Triumph Thruxton, beautifully built by Mellow Motorcycles, with a wonderful sheet metal dress and a wicked compressor. Something’s going on with 142 HP in front of heated tires (!) And an automatic gearshift. As at one of the earlier racing events at the beginning of July in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Arne Tode won his run with superiority. What does Arne Tode like at Glemseck 101? “That is a really great story. Here you see so many relaxed, happy faces, the entire motorcycle scene meets, showed what a great lifestyle it is. “
Erica Barraza Torres
Nice and clear: the tournament tree at Glemseck 101.
The Australian ex-GP driver Mick Doohan, five-time world champion from 1994 to 1998, comes in a private jet from Monaco to Stuttgart for the “International Sprint”. But already in the second run he is outside on his specially built Honda CB 1000 R. Apparently the star has a problem with the clutch. So he can soon be back in the private jet. As Arne Tode says: “Accelerating over a mere 200 meters is actually a challenge – you must not drag the clutch for too long, but you must not let it snap. And when your opponent gets off to a good start, it will be a very tight box. ”In any case, the audience is guaranteed goose bumps. Royal Enfield from India has also built a bold and beautiful sprint racer based on the not yet presented 650 twin Interceptor. The Bronold family of Radical Guzzi rolls a flat 1400 V2 monster called “Nosferatu” to the start, with laughing gas good for around 185 hp. A wolf in wolf’s clothing. Here it also shoots out of the exhaust …
Sunday sprints canceled
Extreme conversion quality also characterizes the two-wheeled marvels of the international customizer scene. Glemseck 101 is your shop window, your stage, the international meeting place. What are the trends, how does the motorcycle theme work today? MOTORRAD author Ralf Petersen is there. He writes the screwdriver tips in our magazine, in the current issue there is a four-page article on how he built a 4-in-4 exhaust system for his Honda CB 750 Sevenfifty himself and had it approved by the TuV. And how did the man from Duisburg arrive? Logically, with the air-cooled four-cylinder in a retro look. To be admired live here in Leonberg or in the current issue of MOTORRAD 19/2018.
Erica Barraza Torres
Amelie Mooseder started on the “Spitfire” from VTR Customs.
Unfortunately, on Sunday it was pouring rain, the sprints in the afternoon were canceled. The track is just too slippery, there is not enough grip for the tires. Ralf Petersen has to take down his tent when it is wet. Just like Oli Heda his stand from the scooter and motorcycle box in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. He presented 300 series Vespas with a compressor and nitrous oxide (TuV registered!) And up to 45 hp. Nikolaus Wykpis (16) from Bonn is amazed, who came by train to inhale so much gasoline-laden air and so much spirit before getting his own driver’s license. No wonder that the noticeably less numerous visitors appeared on Sunday, even in rainy weather. In 2019 everything will be better again, at the next Glemseck 101. See you.
