Actually, this message could have been written in 2019, but the new Harley, then still known as Custom 1250, took until 2021 to get to us. But with over 60 years of construction of the air-cooled Sportys, two more years to the modern engine are no longer a noteworthy span. The new one is not called Custom, but Sportster with a very large S behind it: Sportster S..

1,252 cubic, 122 hp, 125 Nm

The new water-cooled engine of Pan America with 1,252 cubic gets the new Sportster S in the frame, albeit in a newly tuned version, with compression reduced to 12.0: 1, revised cylinder head and reduced speeds. Result: 122 hp at 7,500 tours and 125 Nm at 6,000 revolutions. For comparison: the air-cooled long-stroke engine with 1,200 cubic meters weighs just 97 Nm on the shaft and remains far behind the new one with a maximum of 67 hp. A big plus in terms of engine. At the same time, a good 30 kilograms are missing: the Sportster S weighs 228 kilograms ready to drive, which is largely due to the load-bearing construction of the engine. Suspension with sport

If you recall the chassis data on the old Sportster, the word sport will hardly come to mind. It could be different with the new S: USD fork with 43-millimeter stanchions, fully adjustable, ditto at the rear: stereo dampers with expansion tanks. Reminds a little of the unfortunately discontinued Sportster Roadster and that was a pleasure in terms of driving dynamics. Incidentally, also with the brakes, but here the new Sportster S can’t even catch up, at least in terms of quantity. Instead of a double disc at the front, a single disc is taken into the bite by a radially bolted Brembo saddle. With twice as many pistons as the engine has. The electronics deliver quality: ABS is a must, cornering ABS is the free choice. The lean angle-dependent traction control goes well with this. Harley is very close to the study with the new Sportster S in terms of tire dimensions: At the rear, a rubber with 180/70 R 16 rolls, a measure that is just about the right size. At the front, however, a tire with a width of 160 millimeters on a 17-inch rim in an inclined position would be asked, after all, the tire with a 70 mm cross-section is quite high. The geometry data can also be viewed with a raised brow: 148 millimeters of caster and 60 degrees of steering head angle are clearly Harley. Electronics of today

In addition to the electronic driving aids, which are unique in this class, Harley has added four driving modes. Sport, Road and Rain are programmed, another can be put together individually. The cruise control, which is also standard, feels almost taken for granted. This is topped by the new cockpit: A TFT display with a diameter of 109 millimeters not only shows the usual parameters, but can also be connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth and knows how to please with moving maps navigation.

Prices and colors

Harley-Davidson offers the new Sportster S from 15,495 euros. The color variant Vivid Black is the basis. For a surcharge of 270 euros each, you can choose between the dark red Midnight Crimson or the matt Stone Washed White Pearl. No information is yet available on availability in Germany.
