Really tasty or just puller alarm?

What is called a high-pressure cleaner must also go down to business with good taste. Nine high-pressure cleaners up to 100 euros have to show in the test whether they provide pressure or just puller alarms.

Klaus Herder

11/12/2013

Let’s start with some basic knowledge from our blissful school days. Question: What is the difference between water in liquid form and water vapor? Correct: the temperature. There was something with 100 degrees and so on. Next question: So is a device with a tool tip that emits water in liquid form a steam jet? Of course not! Unless the steam jet is broken, but that would be a totally different story.

Steam jets and high-pressure cleaners are often confused. When it comes to the practical devices that used to be found almost exclusively in the Crosser garage, but are now also popular with normal motorcyclists, it is almost always high-pressure cleaners. And a distinction is made between cold water and hot water devices. To be very clear and very early in this story: When it comes to really nasty, i.e. oily, greasy dirt and you want to do without additional cleaning agents, you can’t avoid buying a hot water device. Everything else is game stuff.

The basic structure is always the same

But that’s exactly what this story is about. With prices well below 100 euros and permanent advertising sprinkling in almost every hardware store, even the most sensible consumer can become weak and take the “risk” of cheap high-pressure cleaners. Which doesn’t have to be a bad thing if you are aware of the limited range of applications for such devices. The limitation relates to time and area. Which brings us back to some basic knowledge. The basic structure of high-pressure cleaners is always the same: an electric motor (or, in the case of professional devices, a combustion engine) drives a piston pump that pressurizes water. The water usually comes out of the pipe at 3 to 5 bar and is brought to a working pressure of up to 100 bar for entry-level devices. In the middle class, it can be 150 bar and more.

The pressure is one thing, the flow rate is another. For entry-level devices, this is up to 500 liters per hour. Which – by the way – means that working with a high-pressure cleaner can be very environmentally friendly. For comparison: A standard garden hose that runs out of the water pipe at 4 bar has a water consumption of 3500 liters in one hour.

Lifespan is usually quite limited

Back to the electric motor: A so-called universal motor is installed almost without exception in entry-level high-pressure cleaners. In other words, what can also be found in mom’s kitchen machine and dad’s cordless screwdriver. Advantages of these drives: inexpensive, compact and light. Disadvantages: loud and usually quite limited in their lifespan. In numbers: such engines are usually not designed for a lot more than 80 hours of net operating time. That doesn’t sound like much, but if you emit your motorcycle for 15 minutes ten times a year (and that’s a long time!), You can expect an engine life of up to 32 years. Arithmetically. The entry-level devices in the professional league usually work with more expensive asynchronous motors, whose life expectancy can be ten to twelve times that of the smallest amateur devices. And there is even more: The top professional devices are designed for a 30 to 40 times longer service life. Not a luxury when you realize that in some areas of application (e.g. agricultural contractors) a high-pressure cleaner can be in use for several hours a day.

Now it should be clear why there are devices under the generic term “high-pressure cleaners” for well under 100 euros, but also for a brisk four-digit euro amount.

Release force, release point and controllability

We are dealing with the smallest of the little ones here. And with all the price homogeneity, there are definitely bigger differences. You often notice this when you connect the water inlet and the high-pressure hose. Some devices require the hands of a surgeon to ensure a secure connection.

Next, when operating the spray gun, the user notices whether the design engineers have made an effort or whether only the simplest standard supplied goods are being used. The release force, release point and controllability are also decisive in determining whether the work is fun. Whether or not it is also effective is ultimately decided by the nozzle outlet. It can consist of two leaflets, the distance between which can be varied by turning the nozzle housing. That looks really great at first – hey, the spray jet can be adjusted! But it can also be sobering when you have to find out that the result is an uneven and not cleanly adjustable flat jet. Much better in MOTORRAD’s assessment: a clearly defined, non-adjustable flat jet. Karcher and Nilfisk show how something like this can look.

Taboo: sensitive surfaces and components

Incidentally, the “dirt blaster” supplied with some devices is a rotating point jet, which is unsuitable for use on a motorcycle because it is far too powerful. But if you have a loving relationship with concrete slabs, you can certainly use the part sensibly. In this context, it should not go unmentioned that sensitive surfaces (such as stickers) and components (such as bearings) are also absolutely taboo for flat jet use. And did we mention the essential oil separator when it comes to cleaning oil-smeared surfaces? So done.

Adjustable universal or flat jet nozzle, dirt blaster – that’s not all that can be found in the boxes. Every now and then a surface or patio cleaner is also included. The name reveals what you can do with it. To what extent it is expedient to work on 500 square meters of outdoor penthouse area with a somewhat limited entry-level device, of all things, is another matter.

Practically always included: an extra container for cleaning agents. This is not applied together with the high pressure jet, but only with the significantly lower pressure that comes directly from the gun. So first spray on the cleaner, let it take effect and then rinse off with high pressure. If you want to give yourself back and forth filling, take the Karcher: take the hose out, put it in the original cleaner bottle – fire free. There are also other good reasons to choose the Karcher classic. Or to the Nilfisk, which is the test winner by just one point.

High pressure hose connection easily accessible, hose is practically long; still relatively low noise level; Pistol can be triggered easily and continuously; Nozzle relatively easy to adjust, spray pattern and cleaning performance still okay.

minus
Device not very stable; The water connection and main switch are somewhat hidden; rather mixed processing quality – pistol / lance / nozzle leaking, engine starts again and again even without triggering the pistol.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

High-pressure cleaners up to 100 euros in the product test

Herder

And this is what the two extremes look like: on the left the very impressive Karcher result, on the right the not really satisfactory Bosch performance. This is reflected in the test result.

Who knows best about motorcycle soiling and how to remove it? Of course: the company that is most successful with motorcycle cleaners – the S100 inventor Dr. Wack. But before MOTORRAD ended up in Ingolstadt for a practical test, at the end of November 2013, they were shopping in the relevant DIY and consumer markets in the greater Stuttgart area. And in doing so, I found out what market power Karcher has, because besides the omnipresent yellow top dog, there are often only a few home improvement store brands to be found in the wild. MOTORRAD bought five of the nine devices under private names on the Internet. After viewing, taking a photo and measuring, the entire test field went to Bavaria together with the editor to find out about Hartmut Hauber (44), head of the Dr. Wack application technology and his colleague Andreas Lange (43). After various preliminary tests (assembly, user-friendliness, etc.), the devices then had to prove in a precisely defined test setup how far they could reach the infamous Dr. Wack test dirt (consisting of chain spray, soot, oils and greases) can clean tiles. In addition to the cleaning performance, the spray pattern and the noise development were also included in the evaluation. Final discussion, awarding of points in five categories – the high-pressure cleaner test was done.

Conclusion

A clear test winner, a real purchase tip, three times solid midfield, the rest in the satisfactory / sufficient no man’s land – such a clear spread pleases the tester and possibly makes the purchase decision easier for the reader. The fact that the two best in the test come from providers who are also very high in the professional sector is not really surprising. What is more surprising is that with Herkules and Lux, two DIY store brands mix well. But before the buying frenzy breaks out, please don’t forget: These are all entry-level and not professional devices.
