Like Phoenix, Horex rises from the ashes with the VR6 Silver Edition. The special edition, limited to 33 pieces, will cost 64,500 euros.

Karsten Jerschke is a doer. The boss of the 3C-Carbon Group, which is active in many sectors from Formula 1 to aircraft construction, radiates this every minute. Jerschke is restless, driven not only to do things, but to push them further, to perfect them. The fact that something like this doesn’t go overnight gnaws at him. But he will always try. Because of this drive and his enthusiasm for motorcycles, he got the insolvent brand at the beginning of the year Horex took over and looked at the power cruiser together with its highly qualified employees and external experts. There was an acute need for action, because the Horex bankruptcy was not only due to mismanagement. It was mainly the product. The Horex VR6, as it left the factory in Augsburg until bankruptcy, was too heavy, suffered from an inadequate engine setup and did not offer the exclusive appearance appropriate for the relatively high price.

The new team started at all three points, with the relocation of the Horex production to the 3C location in Landsberg am
Lech – according to Jerschke, almost 100 percent of the Silver Edition is made there – should already have brought some advantages in terms of production technology. Visually, at least, the move was clearly reflected. Where there used to be a lot of angular plastic and rather bulky retro design elements such as the rear fender, the current Horex is much more airy and designed with a lot of finely made carbon. Jerschke calls this “increasing the perceived value”.

30 kg weight saving

The polished tank is just as much a part of it as the new color scheme for the cast aluminum frame and the massive engine block. Black gave way to silver. There are also many small details such as the carbon heel protector on the pegs, the aluminum turned parts with the revised Horex logo, the high-quality levers or the handmade seat.

But the matter was also approached in terms of design. Above all, the front with the headlights, the high-tech dashboard and the painted carbon fender, but also the rear, on which a sharply cut splash guard replaces the old plastic part and finally the sweeping mudguard. As a result, the entire rear frame could be redesigned with a carbon construction. Now it not only offers mini rear lights with integrated indicators, but also an integrated storage compartment. This is not only practical, but also gives the motorcycle a powerful, dynamic rear view.

Above all, carbon fiber saves a lot of weight – another central topic for the Horex new beginning. The Silver Edition should be 30 kilograms lighter than the previous model. This would still weigh just under 240 kg when ready to drive. Nevertheless, this will have a significant effect on the driving dynamics. In addition to the generous use of carbon, the lightweight lithium-ion battery, which replaced the heavy conventional battery, also contributed to this.

New complete stainless steel exhaust system

But what about the technical equipment? A lot has happened there too. The damper elements now come from
Ohlins and replace the former WP equipment. The fully adjustable fork is specially designed for the Horex, the TTX 36 shock absorber is the finest racing product. The changed spring elements have their share in the now much more moderate seat height of 780 mm (previously 830 mm). Brembo has stayed as a brake supplier, whose four-piston brake calipers are attached radially to a new CNC-milled fork base. The most noticeable technical change concerns the new stainless steel complete exhaust system with a larger manifold cross-section, about the origin of which Karsten Jerschke was silent at the presentation, but he clearly denied any Slovenian participation. A specialist from the automotive sector is probably responsible for what 3C was able to win through its contacts in four-wheel racing.

The improved performance of the six-cylinder can also be attributed to the exhaust, Jerschke is certain of that. The pilot of the new Horex should be able to enjoy a noticeably more powerful acceleration without the previously disturbing performance drop between 4000 and 6000 rpm. For this purpose, the electronics were completely reprogrammed, which is said to have eliminated the long starter organs and the occasional stalling of the engine at traffic lights. But not only the new electronics are responsible for this increased reliability. Improvements in the production of the massive drive could also have contributed to the fact that the VR motor would work much more harmoniously and was therefore much more stable than its predecessor.

Series Horex VR6 at EICMA 2015

Another side effect: The Horex VR6 should now produce 170 hp at 9300 rpm – a full plus of 9 hp. It is obvious that all of this is not available at a budget price. The Silver Edition, limited to 33 pieces, costs 64,500 euros. The next model of the Horex VR6, which will be shown at the EICMA in Milan in November 2015 and will have further technical refinements such as frame parts made of carbon, should be significantly cheaper, if not at a bargain price. Horex has already developed special colors for this and has been patented. The price should then be at the level of the last Horex models around 25,000 euros. MOTORRAD will soon be running the new Horex for its first driving test. The start of sales for the series version is scheduled for spring 2016.
