Cooperate instead of copying at Jawa and Bristol

It is a custom among Asian motorcycle manufacturers to use one another when it comes to technology and style. Logical step: cooperate instead of copying.

The Bristol Veloce 500 is known to us only from fairs and pictures, the German market like a Benelli Leoncino but stand very well. Bristol has its home market in the Philippines. From the Indian brand Jawa the model RVR 500 appeared in pictures. Nothing more than a Bristol Veloce 500 in the colors of Jawa.

Cooperate instead of copying

Since these are exactly the same motorcycles, visually and technically identical, the Asian conditions get a new quality. If it was copied last, it is now cooperated. So it seems that the new Jawa RVR 500 from Bristol will simply be labeled as a Jawa after construction and shipped to India. Since both brands have no stocks in the respective other markets, a logical and clever move.

Win win

If the Asian brands actually align themselves in this way in the medium term, the European branches will compete against strong home teams. Jawa buys a model and technology from Bristol that it does not have itself and can sell the RVR 500 under its own flag without canabilizing itself with Bristol. In return, Bristol gets a high level of capacity utilization in its own production facilities and the degression of fixed costs lowers the prices for both models, which is likely to put additional pressure on the market.

Jawa Moto specialty

In addition to the Indian Jawa Motorcycles under the umbrella of the Classic Legends from Mahindra, there is also the Czech Jawa Moto, which imports the corresponding models. And so the Bristol Veloce 500 is to come to Europe as the Jawa RVR 500. It should cost the equivalent of 6,500 euros via Jawa Moto. A good price. The single-cylinder models known to us as Mash appear in the Jawa Moto portfolio, but under the Jawa brand. Interesting: Jawa Moto has a 500cc Enduro on offer. The RVM 500, which is actually an Argentine RVM, which in turn is a Motrac from China. The 500cc engine from Motrac look very similar to that of the Bristol and are enormously similar in terms of performance. The engine is said to come from the Chinese giant Loncin, the use of the same engine in different companies and models would be conceivable.

And elsewhere in Europe?

Similar strategies are already being used in Europe. However, not across the group. Much more, a manufacturer sells its models through national importers under various brands: LexMoto and Mitt. China giant Zongshen builds the motorcycles themselves and brands them for national importers in England (Lexmoto) and Spain (Mitt). Absolutely correct: there was already something like that with the big players from Japan. With the V-Strom and KLV 1000, Suzuki and Kawasaki had the same motorcycle on offer from 2004 to 2005. The Kawa is actually a Suzuki, was built by Suzuki and is in the papers as the manufacturer. Perhaps a problem back then: Both models were offered in parallel on the markets. Jawa, Bristol and Zongshen are on.

Conclusion

Clever move from Bristol and Jawa: A cooperation between the manufacturer in the Philippines and India would bring a lot for both of them. And with 15 hours flight time between the countries, neither of them will bite away any shares. For Europe, the Jawa importer Jawa Moto is on to offer the RVR and for 6,500 euros at a good price.

Via the Jawa Moto, there is also the Variable RVM 500, an Argentine travel enduro with almost the same engine, which is actually a Motrac from China. Confused? Understandable, the connections between brands and manufacturers are becoming ever denser and more opaque.
