With the M Endurance chain, motorcycle manufacturer BMW is now offering a maintenance-free chain for the first time, which should have properties comparable to those of a cardan drive.

Like previous X-ring chains, the M Endurance chain also has a permanent lubricant filling enclosed by X-rings between the rollers and bolts. What is completely new, however, is that the previously necessary additional lubricant for the rollers and thus the familiar “Lubricate the chain” as is the need for re-tensioning from time to time due to normal wear and tear.

Less friction, no wear

This enormous gain in comfort was made possible by the use of a new coating material for the rollers: tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), also known as industrial diamond. This coating is characterized by its extreme hardness and resistance and in this respect is classified between the well-known DLC coating (Diamond Like Carbon) and the pure diamond. In contrast to previously used metal surfaces, the coating with the ta-C industrial diamond does not wear off. At the same time, this type of coating also offers a drastically reduced coefficient of friction.

BMW

BMW specifies a life expectancy of a good 20,000 kilometers – comparable to a well-maintained conventional chain.

BMW promises that the M Endurance chain, which was developed together with the chain specialists from Regina, with its dry lubrication properties and the eliminated wear and tear in terms of maintenance, is equivalent to the convenience of the cardan drive. This includes the unavoidable cleaning work of a conventional chain using sprayed-off lubricant. Accordingly, the M Endurance chain is also more environmentally friendly than conventional chains. Of course, the endurance chain is not a chain that lasts forever. The endurance chain can be recognized by a special marking.

Ex works or as an accessory

The M Endurance chain in 525 pitch is now initially available for the two four-cylinder models BMW S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR. The price for the M Endurance chain is 286.08 euros and a complete chain set including drive pinion, sprocket (both conventionally made and not specially coated) and small parts costs 425.59 euros. If the M Endurance chain is ordered directly from the factory as optional equipment, the surcharge is 100 euros. The option to equip other BMW models is in preparation.

Regina

The chain manufacturer will be selling a limited contingent of the maintenance-free chain directly from January 2021.

Chain exclusively from BMW?

The chain manufacturer Regina sells a limited contingent of the maintenance-free chain on its own. Regina is not allowed to sell the chains to other manufacturers, however, here BMW has the exclusive rights.

Conclusion

A chain that no longer needs maintenance – madness! If what BMW promises to come true, this new final drive would be a real comfort revolution.
