The successor to the tried and tested Michelin Pilot Activ has been completely redesigned and is intended to combine the advantages of the diagonal belt structure with those of a highly developed rubber compound with a very high proportion of silica.

The new Road Classic will be available in 17 dimensions (9 front, 8 rear) from January 2021, with two further dimensions for the rear axle to follow in June 2021.

All dimensions have been given a completely new tread and flank design, which is strongly based on classic tire designs, but should more than meet today’s demands for high performance on the road.

The construction of the diagonal carcass with a belt (Bias Belted) increases cornering stability and improves driving stability even at high speeds. Due to the so-called cut belt over the carcass, the tire does not expand as much at higher speeds, which keeps the contact area on the road more constant.

With the new Road Classic, Michelin tries to answer the question of a tire that combines an authentic retro look with modern tire technology.

For a more even wear pattern, the direction of rotation of the front tire is reversed without affecting the authentic look of the Road Classic.

Michelin developed the Road Classiv specifically for use on youngtimers, modern classics, entry-level mopeds and also for real classics.

The problem with the bias belted structure is the change in the type of tire. The predecessor was a pure cross-ply tire.

With the new one there may be problems with the HU due to the change. In the worst case, the new type must be entered.

Michelin Road Classic: tires for young and old timers
Michelin Road Classic
New rubber for old motorcycles
With the new Road Classic, Michelin would like to answer the question of a tire that combines an authentic retro look with the demand for modern tire technology and is thus clearly aimed at youngtimers, modern and real classics, as well as small motorcycles for beginners.

For this purpose, the successor to the tried and tested Pilot Activ has been redesigned from the ground up, with great emphasis on wet grip. Michelin himself speaks of 50 percent more grip in wet conditions compared to its predecessor – we are excited. The construction of the diagonal carcass with belt (Bias Belted) under the rubber is fundamentally new. Their design is intended to increase cornering stability and increase driving stability at higher speeds.
Michelin
Due to the so-called cut belt over the carcass, the tire should not expand as much at higher speeds, which keeps the contact area on the road more constant and thus benefits the tire’s mileage.
Michelin
To preserve the classic look when used on corresponding motorcycles, the Road Classic has been given a completely new profile and side design, which is strongly based on classic tire designs. The negative profile share of 26 percent, together with the large tread grooves, should ensure that the new Road Classic has a high level of water drainage.
Michelin
The new Road Classic from Michelin should be available in 17 dimensions (9 front, 8 rear) from January 2021, with two additional dimensions for the rear axle to follow in June 2021.

But be careful when converting: By changing the main design from diagonal to diagonal with belt – recognizable in the B in the dimension – there can be problems at the HU, as some testing organizations can determine that the operating license has expired in this case in order to register the new tire Desire. In this case the usual one is sufficient Approval by the tire manufacturer no longer off. At Michelin, however, there are manufacturer certificates that can facilitate registration, but do not guarantee it. An arc of tension that many tire manufacturers and, much worse, motorcyclists have to go through.

Conclusion
There cannot be enough modern tires for older motorcycles, because each of us should have slipped spectacularly across the track on a classic wooden skin when it spewed three drops from the sky. Whether information how “50 percent more wet grip than its predecessor” are generally representative, everyone should judge for themselves, because 50 percent better than really bad is by no means good. However, it shows that Michelin has made targeted improvements here and that is worth all honors, because if their colleagues in Clermont-Ferrand can do something, it’s wet grip.
