Travel legends
The clocks run differently on board mobile homes. More leisurely, more enjoyable, quieter. This also applies to you: Current, tried-and-tested tourers can look back on a long model history.
Thomas Schmieder
01/13/2009
Brand new super athletes appear like a supernova above the motorcycle sky, only to burn up after two years. A touring rider, on the other hand, always remains a touring rider. After many years it still satisfies the wanderlust just as well, carries you out of the cramped everyday life and into the experience. Power? Minor matter. The main thing is on the go, upright, sublime and protected. Luggage on board, longing in the heart. The best example: BMW’s RT series. Born for the IFMA trade fair in Cologne in 1978 as the R 100 RT. Since then, almost a quarter of a million RT, i.e. travel tourers, have rolled off the assembly line.
A quarter of a million of these large, expensive, fully equipped touring motorcycles, always with a two-cylinder boxer engine, as two or four-valve units, as series with 1000 and 800, 850 and 900, 1100 as well as 1150 and 1200 cm3. The secret of success? Stay true to yourself. 30 years, one concept: cladding, cardan shaft, suitcase. Raised quickly to one of the most popular government and police motorcycles in particular: highly representative, but easy to use and handle. RTs are on duty from Miami to Moscow, from Copenhagen to Cape Town. In 1978, 70 hp represented the spearhead of BMW motorcycle construction, not 170. Full fairings had only been available in large-scale production since 1976, on the BMW R 100 RS, ground in the wind tunnel. Two years later, the R 100 RT built on the sportier sister. In the literal sense of the word: The lower part of the fairing that flows around the two cylinders was the same on both top models. But the RT received a larger, steeper and mechanically height-adjustable disc. Today something like that is electric. Haufenwiese electronics also found their way into other areas. For ABS and injection, lambda probe and heated grips, cruise control and on-board radio. Even the chassis can be electronically adjusted for a surcharge.
A topic as early as 1978: lockable storage boxes left and right in the interior panels for odds and ends, cards, purses. This is exactly what it’s all about: traveling to an experience and making the experience as easy and comfortable as possible. Also for the company with whom the RT driver prefers to be out and about. Honda had created a touring dream on wheels back in 1974. The Gold Wing initially appeared as an “athlete”, but quickly turned towards touring. After that, in terms of travel technology, nothing was the same as before. Honda’s four-cylinder water boxer opened up new dimensions: this silky running culture, the smooth revving, the power without any hectic rush. Honda’s first full-liter model reminded many of a car on two wheels, even without the fairing, weighing a whopping 295 kilograms. One of these only found its way into the 1100 successor in 1980. The same applied to cases ex works.
Honda Gold Wing and Moto Guzzi California
Artist
Gold rush 1975: With the Gold Wing GL 1000, Honda brought not only the first 1000, but also the first cardan motorcycle from Japan onto the market.
It could have been even bigger. In 1974 the gold swing arm prototype called AOK anticipated what the Gold Winger had to wait for until the end of 1988: a six-cylinder boxer with a displacement of around 1.5 liters. But in the early 1970s, engineers couldn’t find a way to get the rider close enough to the handlebars with such a long engine. After all, the 1000 series, which was available from 1975, also had various delicacies: for example, the tank was placed under the seat with a favorable focus. The dummy tank housed the filler neck and otherwise served as a limousine-like glove compartment. A protective airbag sits in the dummy tank of the current 1.8-liter truck at an additional cost, the first ever in a motorcycle. Even without it, the super-smooth six-cylinder is superlative: the eight-pound bike with an LCD display for non-closed luggage compartments (!) Costs as much as a mid-range car in Germany without any extras: a good 26,000 euros. With such exclusivity, it is hardly noticeable that the gentle giant has existed again in its current form since 2001.
Moto Guzzi
Moto Guzzi California 850, model 1972 and 2009: You have to look twice to see more modern technology.
Much earlier, namely in 1971, was at Moto Guzzi created a legend in Mandello: the California as the archetype of the Italian tourer. Its name tells history: The Los Angeles Police Department used Guzzi V7 Special as a service vehicle, with a large window, opulent seat and high, curved handlebars. Such virtues are not only suitable for hunting down traffic offenders or criminals, but are also excellent for enjoying the landscape in a relaxed manner. Sit on it and feel good. For the USA Moto Guzzi built a few civilian copies of the California, with 757 cm3 90-degree V2, running boards, single seat and GRP suitcases. That came in a larger series “Cali” not until 1972 with the 850 engine from the GT. And created their very own myth. The current California Vintage, presented in 2006, quotes in every detail. Fundamental technical innovations are therefore kept within limits. ABS, for example, is still nil, the power output remained modest (liter output: 69 hp instead of 65 hp 1972) and the torque hole at low speeds is a big crater ?? as with all 1100 Guzzi two-valve models.
Harley-Davidson Electra Glide
Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Standard, Model 2009: The handlebar-mounted fairing has been enlarged, and now ABS is on board. Otherwise as always.
The tank capacity is smaller than it used to be, the top speed only increased marginally, from 175 to 185 within 37 years. The ergonomics even got worse. No further gear was added, only disc brakes instead of drum brakes. But she already had that “850 T3” from 1975. At that time already with the integral brake system typical of Guzzi: The foot pedal not only operated the rear stopper, but also the left disc at the front. In this way, Guzzi can reminisce about the design of the? Vintage ?? pay quite dearly at 15,850 euros. 1972? This is practically the modern age for Harley! The first Electra Glide appeared in 1965. Its name is at least as American as Corvette, Hamburger or Coca-Cola. But the first tourer from Harley-Davidson The good-natured dinosaur E-Glide was by no means: Travel-worthy ?? Dresser ?? Factory-fitted Big Twins with accessories were already in fashion in the 1930s. Either with side-controlled “Flathead”-Motor (since 1929) equipped or from “Knucklehead”-Engine (presented in 1936), the first Harley-Davidson V-Twin with valves hanging in the top of the cylinder head.

Electrified or electrified? The electric starter turned the Duo-Glide, which had been available since 1959, into the Electra Glide.
It was replaced in 1948 by the improved Panhead engine, initially in chassis with Springer forks. The telescopic fork made its debut in 1949, turning the Pan into the Hydra Glide. She was considered one of the most comfortable tourers in the world. In 1959, instead of the previous rigid frame, it was given a swing arm and two suspension struts: the Duo Glide was born. The model upgrade for 1965 included the electric starter, which turned the Duo Glide into the first Electra Glide. And 2009? Since the Electra Glide Standard is really cheap for Harley conditions, costs in the simplest version for unconditional touring suitability ?? just ?? 18 750 euros. Priceless: the breath of history moves with you on every meter. Wide handlebars, comfortable, upright sitting position, fat, expansive seat, knees relaxed and feet casually placed on running boards. So it can be toured splendidly, timeless, even forgotten. Harley goes to great lengths to quote itself and hide modern technology. ABS pulse generators such as sensors, for example. Security? Willingly. When the classic line doesn’t suffer. According to the proven tourer maxim: “Preferably nothing new”.

Kawasaki GTR 1000 – the forever old one
archive
Kawasaki GTR 1000, model 1986.
Right from the start, in 1986, it was not quite up to date. Kawasaki’s six-hundredweight cracker weighed a whopping 40 kilos more than the targeted opponent, the BMW K 100 RT. Nevertheless, the 1000 has gathered a loyal fan base around them. Which Japanese motorcycle has been built for 17 years (!) Without any noteworthy facelift? The plus point of the GTR: its problem-free engine. It came from the GPX 1000 RX and was trimmed for a fuller torque curve. Comfort and equipment were okay, right down to the cardan and fold-out luggage hook. But not the driving behavior: ?? Anyone who wants even a touch of sportiness has come to the completely wrong address with the baroque Kawasaki ??, it was said in the 2003 MOTORRAD catalog when we left. For 16,250 euros the abbreviation GTR lives on in a 1400, but otherwise nothing with the “eternally old” has in common.
