Exhaust – what do you think of that? Great sound probably, others unfortunately call for tough laws.

Some people would immediately claim that former Chancellor Helmut Kohl had no idea about motorcycles and are accordingly irritated to find it here. Well, a lot of people would even go so far as to claim that Kohl had no idea about a lot of things and, as Chancellor, had shown that often enough. But that’s political banter and belongs in the mirror. In fact, in 1984, Helmut Kohl outed himself to the motorcycle scene as Jean Paul. Long before the former Chancellor made himself the wrecking ball of any motorcycle aesthetic together with the BMW K1 in Hockenheim in 1989 (Toni Mang did not look tingly either, but deserves our undivided respect as the German GP record world champion), Kohl spoke at a legendary press conference, which was actually about his style of government, the most important sentence in the motorcycle world that every student would have to learn by heart in the first grade: “What matters is what comes out of the back.”

Before residents of popular motorcycle routes scream out, it must be possible to do something. When riding a motorcycle, it is by no means just about volume. Otherwise, excavators, tractors or decommissioned tanks would be much more popular recreational vehicles. However, it is the natural law of the internal combustion engine that performance is correspondingly loud. Fat power requires soundscape. Who does not understand: What would a Wagner opera be without a heroic tenor? As unacceptable as Motorhead on the Melodica.

The Ficus has to give way to the subwoofer in the living room

This only as a fitting simile, because there can be no plea for unbridled rioting here. The zeitgeist cannot be bent at a stroke – whether we like it or not. It doesn’t matter whether 20 years ago there were a lot more motorcyclists who were allowed to drive much louder machines and who nevertheless complained much less about motorcyclists. Legislators keep turning down the volume control and society goes with them – or is it the other way around? However, we motorcyclists have to get used to it as much as possible and this is not the place to advertise tolerance among non-motorcyclists.

However, the whole thing sometimes takes on bizarre forms. You can hardly imagine how many of those who prick up their ears about motorcyclists are currently struggling with Formula 1, while they try to tune the brave humming of the charged six-cylinder cars over coffee and cake on Sundays using the volume control on the remote control . Some people suddenly discover Dolby Surround. Without flax: While I recently got myself the latest Motorhead live DVD out of fear of Lemmy’s premature death, I was able to hear acoustically how Heinz appealed to Margret for understanding that the Ficus in the living room would have to give way to the subwoofer so that Monaco would finally be back is really fun. Everyone is a fool to himself. Certain things just need the right soundtrack.

What matters is what comes out at the back

But actually Niki Lauda’s comment on exactly the matter was the most powerful thing that could ever be heard in connection with racing, driving feel and volume: “Are we here to race or make noise?” With that, the Austrian rascal is addressing something fundamental. What is motorcycle riding about? In order not to completely spoil the fun on the bike, we have to limit ourselves to the essentials. When asked if he didn’t appreciate the 990 sound more than the 800, Valentino Rossi replied that he didn’t care, after all he wore ear plugs, he missed the punch. It is astonishing that today we legally lure 200 HP out of a one-liter engine and are still significantly quieter than in 1993 with a 122 HP ZXR 750. We are happy about it, because that makes us socially more invulnerable. Then we can relieve the Spiegel people of some work. So Kohl had no idea after all. His sentence should have been: “What matters is what arrives at the back.”
