Motorcycle scene: Hamburg
Lively scene in the Hanseatic city
Not only Udo Lindenberg feels right at home in Hamburg, tens of thousands of motorcyclists also make the scene in the Hanseatic city extremely lively. In addition, there are accessories specialists known nationwide and the largest motorcycle meetings in the republic.

There is thumping and roaring in the air, pounding and trembling, roaring and hissing. Exceptional state on the Alster and Elbe, motorcycles, motorcycles, motorcycles everywhere. Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands. If nothing works anymore in this lindworm made of iron, steel and aluminum, high signs warn “Engine off”. On normal days, people in Hamburg tend to suffer from the sulfur-containing heavy oil emissions from shipping. You can easily put away more than 50,000 motorcycles.
So many came together from June 24th to 26th, 2011, for the Hamburg Harley Days and the Mogo, the largest motorcycle church service in the world: The self-expression spectacle about the US twins meets contemplation. The Mogo began in 1983 with only 200 participants, today 20,000 to 30,000 motorcyclists from all over northern Germany make the pilgrimage here. If you can’t find a place in the Michel, you can listen outside to the sermon of the Protestant motorcycle pastor Erich Faehling over the loudspeaker. Faehling’s pastor colleague Holger Janke in Hamburg also set an example for motorcyclists. In 1997/98 he and fellow campaigners launched the Bikers Helpline as an emergency call and telephone counseling service from motorcyclists for motorcyclists.
Today the Hamburg switchboard can be reached around the clock on 01 80/4 43 33 33 or via www.bikershelpline.de. In his spare time, Pastor Janke drives his 450-series BMW Enduro off-road or walks the dog with his Vmax team. He gives coached trainings and dreams of driving his S 1000 tricycle (!) “To assisted living in 20 years – as the fastest pastor in Germany”.
Every September, the Hamburg city park race is all about speed. These are show races for motorcycles and cars built up to 1978 in the middle of the metropolis. Classic racing atmosphere across from the big city district, that is unique in Germany. The colorful hustle and bustle around the race round off the accessories and parts market and unforgettable stars – from speedway world champion Egon Muller to Grand Prix legend Jim Redman. And the normal motorcyclists? Well, what is normal in Hamburg where you can stroll along the Reeperbahn on a motorcycle? Many drivers, including those from the surrounding area, are drawn to the Kiez to go out by bike. The classic Honda CB 500 Four parked in front of the Davidwache between the XT and Ducati is by no means an unusual sight.
Peer came to the flea market in the Schanzenviertel to stroll with his chopped Yamaha XS 650, she calls it “noble rat”. Snapshot in front of the independent motorcycle workshop in the “Rote Flora”, the building that the autonomous people in the Schanzenviertel saved from demolition: The third Triumph Scrambler is parked there – in one day. Apparently particularly popular in Hamburg thanks to the upright sitting position and cool, air-cooled aura. Hans-Jurgen Lewandowski has one, slightly modified, in addition to a historic triumph and BSA.
A noticeable number of two- and three-cylinder engines are sweeping the streets. The blonde half-Spanish Conchita enjoys life from the saddle of her Ducati 750 Supersport. Nobody in Hamburg likes to ride a motorcycle. Because you can ride your bike through the chaos of traffic in a stylish and casual way. Here the chubby, stressful city meets Hanseatic understatement. Attractive contrasts. Such as those supplied by Holger Aue. Although he lives at the gates of the megacity, his comics hit the point. The cartoonist is devilishly quick in real life, and not just at classic races. Because of the northern lights, no curves can … Rainer Traupel also lives a bit outside. Because the old English fan was dissatisfied with the reliability of old twins, he quickly designed and built a V2 engine completely himself, which he also makes in Hamburg.
A great motorcycle experience: pass the old Elbe tunnel from 1911, the one with the historic vehicle elevator, in which the engine sound echoes off the walls. Later, end the day of driving with an Astra Pils on St. Pauli, near the port, while the big pots pour by outside and your own engine cools down cracklingly. Wonderful. Or would you rather go to the beer garden in Ovelgonne, or to the winding Blanke-nese? Everything just a few motorcycle minutes away. Even real tours work here, without any mountains and with hardly any curves. In the morning, when the fruit trees are in bloom, out into the Alte Land, the picturesque stretch of land just south of the Elbe. In the evening, stop by at the Zollenspieker Fahrhaus motorcycle meeting point at Kapt’n Kuddel, at the Elbe ferry at the most southeastern point in Hamburg.

Even months after the Christian mass event, yellow ribbons on the machines announce the convoy ride in front of Hamburg’s landmark, the Michel.
Even better: go straight to the sea. Via the medieval old town of Lubeck to the Baltic Sea, to fashionable Travemunde or to tranquil Mecklenburg. Or to the west coast? Here you go, the North Sea health resort Sankt Peter-Ording is only 150 kilometers away. There are stilt houses and the sandy beaches of Bohl and Ording, which can be accessed by motorbike for a fee. The motorail train from Hamburg-Altona brings people and machines far to the south from the far north. So it’s stress-free and often overnight in the sunny, winding motorcycle areas of the Alps, the Pyrenees and Croatia.
At home in the trading city of Hamburg, the merchant tradition still applies to a certain extent. Also in the motorcycle scene. And especially for Detlev Louis. An original Hamburg company, as a pure motorcycle trade under the name Lohmann & Louis founded in 1938. Lohmann got out and Detlev, who was still very young, took over the company in 1946. He remained loyal to the location over the years. The head of the company, who was originally from Hamburg, moved with the times, also began to sell accessories and only gave up trading in complete motorcycles in 1996. From the motorcycle workshop to the corporation, a success story on the Waterkant. The main shop is on the Hamburg motorcycle mile on Suderstrasse.
Georg Suck is Germany’s oldest Harley dealer, he brought the first US Twins into the country as early as 1910, 100 years ago. Nowadays there is also “Harley-Davidson Hamburg Nord” with the bosses Axel and Roger as real veterans. The Harley scene in Hamburg is traditionally very much alive. Even the police officially tested 20 E-Glides in 2003 (under the unspeakable Senator for the Interior, Schill), but soon switched back to BMW. An institution for BMW drivers is Studemann, an authorized dealer since 1971. For pure motorcycle dealers, personal and competent advice is a matter of honor. “With us there is no lifestyle drivel and no four-wheeled ballast,” says boss Uwe Rudisch. The Studemann brothers have been making various motorcycle brands since 1948. In the 1960s, they serviced the Bundeswehr’s Maico M 250 B machines.
For classic Englishmen à la Norton and Triumph is “Single & Twin “first address. Full service is also available here for vintage and youngtimers from other brands. The single-cylinder specialists from Kedo are known nationwide: They have 6500 items ready for Yamaha SR and XT, from oil filters to complete conversions.
No matter what and to how many: Hamburg is both an escape and a starting point for its motorcyclists. According to the “Glucksstudie 2011”, the people of Hamburg are the happiest Germans. That could even apply to the motorcyclists there.
