Experiential education with Moto Guzzi and Vespa
Father-daughter tour with Guzzi and Vespa over the Gotthard to Lake Maggiore. An intense experience shaped by the whims of nature: capricious weather in the mountains, plus typical hiccups in the tension between puberty and authority.

“Be glad that you have nothing to do with such bitchy, pubescent daughters, whose mother also forbids a stricter pace of the father. ”That starts well. I have the pleasure of accompanying my friend and colleague Klaus and his 16-year-old daughter Jana from the Black Forest to Lake Maggiore. Bonndorf-Cannobio, according to the route planner, 297 kilometers to be completed in 3:54 hours. However, only if Jana rides with Papa on the Guzzi, as she has often done before. The young lady who starts her apprenticeship as a hotel manager in a few weeks doesn’t want it. But this time with her bright orange-colored 50s Vespa LX, fatherly Christmas present with around 3000 kilometers on the clock, even on the Lago scooters. And over the St. Gotthard Pass. Basically, the fledgling of the offspring is only to be welcomed, even if it strains the parents’ nerves, right? “She doesn’t get involved with the question of clothing.

“Why what for rainy weather? I don’t like it, I don’t wear it.”
“Why what for rainy weather? I don’t like it, I don’t wear it.” The emails that Klaus sends me before I start my trip speak volumes. His hope in all of this: far from the stress of everyday life on a tour together to improve the not entirely trouble-free atmosphere between father and daughter.
“Do you know how heavy the duffel bag is? Jana has not mastered the scooter yet. And when it rains, the shoes are wet. “Words of a mother worried about the baby. Carmen and her daughter thought for a long time about what should be part of the pile of clothes in the teenage room. And she is now ensuring that the roll of luggage is not properly on the Vespa instead, the hump bench of the V7 Cafe Classic is screwed up.
Almost ten kilometers behind the garden fence at home, the big wide world begins at the Stuhlingen border crossing. Where the Swiss stokers come at the weekend to let the pig out and 180 hp in the Black Forest, only smiling tiredly over comparatively mild German speed tickets, no cock crows for Jana’s long-expired child ID card. The fact that your fun car is running easily goes completely unnoticed thanks to the civil whispering four-stroke engine. The “Eagle from Mandello” escorts his child as carefully as an old hen. In order not to get tangled up in the dense road network, Klaus has a navigation system on board and steers via secondary routes that are as unused as possible. Here a pilgrimage church, there a bridge saint, now and then – quickly, quickly – a tractor to be overtaken. The metropolitan area of Zurich-Kloten is bypassed and then after 80 kilometers – more than twice as much as Jana’s previous route record – a lunch break is made under the plane trees of the Hotel “Schiff” in Pfaffikon on the shores of Lake Zurich.

At the Gotthard it does get a bit fresh…
Then the next stage can not be frightening: The Etzelpass is 950 meters high, and the Ibergeregg is 1,406 meters high. A thick piece of nature to see your fill, Switzerland shows its good side here. Gravel passages and undulating asphalt don’t throw the little wheels off their gyrating equilibrium.
Later the Gotthard. It should be a good acquaintance for Alpine hares, the historic pass road. A point of honor to avoid the road tunnel opened in 1980 and to choose the old cobblestone route instead. We have no other choice anyway, because the tunnel is part of the Swiss motorway network and is closed to 50 mm scooters. Which now provides a lot of fresh air. When there were also snowfields that hadn’t thawed away in the shadow of the mountain flanks even in mid-June, the time had finally come: Jana put on a fleece jacket and thick gloves, voluntarily. While it was a choppy 30 degrees at the lakes at noon, at the top of the 2091 meter high Gotthard Pass there are only 14 of them. The local marmot population then experiences its orange-colored miracle: the speedometer needle swings around 65, only in the cobblestone serpentines of the old Tremola road does our bold chick slow down for a moment.

The “Eagle from Maranello” guides his child.
The winding ends in Airolo, the first or last place on the southern ramp of the Gotthard. “Should we drive on or look for a room? You decide. ”“ Go on! ”The communication between father and daughter will only be detailed in Rodi-Fiesso, where we will find accommodation in the“ Baldi ”hotel. The fact that Jana misses the straightening iron and brush when she wakes up the next morning at 7.30 a.m. is a result of mother’s worried repackaging before departure.
“Do you know that? The black bitumen strips are extremely slippery when wet, ”explains the veteran of his tough wards, while she climbs into the rain after breakfast, by no means proving herself to be a whining sugar doll. “So what?” Is what it says on the yellow overcoat that Klaus took with him as a precaution. And that can soon disappear into the baggage roll again when only the fuel drips at a gas station in Bellinzona. 7.5 liters for the 323 kilometers since home – that’s when the piggy bank laughs.
Ticino is particularly spoiled by the sun in general and life in particular. In the fashionable towns of Locarno and Ascona on the north shore of Lake Maggiore, Maseratis are a must, and after the Italian border, the Dolce Vita really gets going. From the Ape to the Cobra, everything is there, from 3 p.m. there is again human bustle on the Plaza – end of the siesta.
Like Noah’s Ark, the Hotel Milano in Belgirate is right on the lake. It doesn’t matter at all, at most romantic feelings, when lightning flashes over the water at an evening dinner. And when the full moon finally does the honors between the wispy clouds, we don’t want to leave again anytime soon. Only the sore muscles in Jana’s arms should go, because after all, she has now mastered around a thousandth of the distance to the pale earth satellite.
On the way back, Jana and Klaus with their Italian classics like Guzzi V7 and Vespa are the focus of enthusiastic interest at every stop. It can happen that while small talk with the ticket seller the ferry from Verbania to Laveno is missed outright.

Even if there is no risk of frostbite: Peter tests his little lambs hard.
The shoe shop in Luino would be the last chance before the border to buy something suitable for 16-year-old feet in style in Italy, but the shop is still closed. No matter, because Jana can go on a shopping tour around the clock at home in the globally accessible Zalando shoe temple.
Even if there is no risk of frostbite: Peter tests his little lambs hard. You have to cross the Gotthard in a ghostly gray and with ten meters visibility. The engines whisk through the chewy soup like stirrers, then fully concentrated for 140 kilometers to the home stables. The question remains how it was. Jana: “Nice and exhausting. Would also go away again, but then with friends – and go to where it is warmer. “Klaus:” The bottom line is that it worked out great, it was a great experience – hopefully for both of us … And now she’s sitting in front of the Fatzebuk again. “Carmen:” Now I am very proud of Jana. “
Travel information

Travel time: three to four days. Distance covered: 750 kilometers.
A motorcycle tour with your daughter or son – that’s always something special, especially when your offspring is no longer sitting on the pillion, but has been turning their own throttle for a short time. Whether it goes from the Black Forest over the Gotthard to Italy to Lake Maggiore or whether the region and route are completely different, plays a rather secondary role in such a “generation excursion”.
Getting there:
The quickest way to reach the German-Swiss border near Stuhlingen is via the A 81, exit Geisenheim, then via Blumberg to the junction at the B 314. In the Black Forest, however, the choice of alternative, albeit rarely straight, routes is tempting.
Accommodation:
If you are in a hurry, you can cover the 750 kilometers of this tour without an overnight stay. However, due to the occasion, we have made quarters three times. South of the Gotthard, on the cantonal road from Airolo to Bellinzona, but also directly on the railway line, is the family-run Hotel Baldi, CH-6772 Rodi-Fiesso, phone 00 41/91/8 67 17 82, www.hotelbaldi.ch , Single room 71.50 SFR, double room 124.50 SFR. The ideal address for everyone who wants to be as close as possible to Lake Maggiore is the Hotel Milano, Via Mazzini 4, I-28832 Belgirate (VB), telephone 00 39/3 22/7 65 25, www.hotelmilanolagomaggiore.it , Single 60 EUR, double 90 EUR. The Hotel Hofli, Hellgasse 20, CH-6460 Altdorf, phone 00 41/41/8 75 02 75, www.hotel-hoefli.ch, single rooms from 90 SFR, double rooms from 130 SFR, offers traditional Swiss hospitality.
Literature and Maps:
A lot of interesting facts about Italy’s second largest lake can be found in the “Lago Maggiore” travel guide from Michael Muller Verlag for 17.90 euros. If necessary, the same publisher can also add the title “Southern Black Forest” to the travel library for 15.90 euros. And if you are curious to find out where the most beautiful motorcycle tours are in the country of the Confederates, you can grab the ADAC TourBook “Switzerland” for 14.95 euros. In order not to have to rely solely on the navigation system, the following road maps, all from Michelin on a scale of 1: 200,000 for 7.50 euros, are useful: Sheet 551 “Switzerland North”, sheet 553 “Switzerland South-East” and sheet 351 “ Piedmont, Aosta Valley “.
