Roast onion roast and gravel roads

MOTORRAD Classic called, and a dozen weatherproof boxer drivers came. Initially wet and cold, the two-valve gravel tour over the Swabian Alb was a heartwarming and extremely sociable meeting of like-minded people.

It couldn’t have been worse. The alarm goes off at seven and the world ends outside. Given the masses of water, pessimists would set about building an ark. But MOTORRAD Classic sets out to explore the gravel roads of the Swabian Alb with the restored BMW R 80 G / S. And because not only sport, but also having fun in a club is the best, we called on the two-valve friends to join the expedition. But who swims with temperatures around ten degrees and pouring rain to the meeting point on the Swabian Alb?

After all, every Swabian knows that on “third Alb” winter lasts six months and summer six weeks. We are all the more astonished that a dozen boxer drivers start his two-valve engines. The pack rolls in a convoy through misty valleys and over soaking wet pass roads. Bad mood? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that. Lots of gravel roads and tiny, curvy streets in a dreamlike landscape. At every pee break, happy faces grin under their helmets. No, a few drops can’t spoil the fun for these guys!

Distant view to the Allgau

At lunchtime, the troop takes off from rain suits and undergrowth and enjoys the view of the Allgau from the almost 800-meter-high buses. The southernmost point of the journey has been reached, the rain has long since given way to loose clouds, which sometimes even let the sun shine through. After a delicious Swabian roast beef, the boxer friends disappear again on adventurous gravel stretches in the dense forest north of the Danube. And then the question arises: left or right? On the left the asphalt road winds up the mountain, on the right a steep aisle opens through gloomy forest over soaking wet, soggy forest floor. Big, questioning eyes, uncertain shrug of the shoulders. “Aufi geht‘s Buam, dos try ma oifach”, it sounds in the rough Bavarian dialect from behind through the pack.

And you can’t ask twice. Even the street tire group cannot escape the euphoria. Shortly afterwards, the boxers fluff and fling through the slippery ravine. While the coarse faction is already grinning on the summit, the other riders are struggling with the pitfalls of the rutted ruts. Five, six, seven, at some point all twelve will be on top. A bit sweaty, with an incredulous shake of the head and loud laughter, the camera phones are pulled out to take pictures of the heroes who have fought their way through. Over the rocky furrowed Danube valley near Sigmaringen, the pack drives back towards Reutlingen. Of course not without reviewing the day over a cappuccino and cake.

Still a top quality driving machine

It is about the two-valve engine in great detail. Carburetor jets, clutch problems, which tires, which air pressure, where are which parts? It quickly becomes clear that for these friends of classic scrap iron, mere possession and regular dusting is not enough. The G / S – with or without a line – is far too good to have your tires flat in the showcase as a sculpture of old German mechanical engineering.

Even 35 years after its premiere, this model of versatility and – when the major and minor defects have been rectified – also of reliability is still a first-class driving machine, for many also a commercial vehicle for everyday use. Great when classics don’t collect dust, but can be admired on streets and squares! Just like on our trip.
