X-Lite 802 RR

manufacturer

X-Lite 802 RR.

Our sister journal PS announced last summer that Nolan, respectively X-lite as the sports line of the Italian brand, would bring a new, genuine racing helmet with the X-lite 802 RR for the 2016 season. Now PS could test the racing helmet in Almeria. Outwardly nothing has really changed except for the decorations. The choice of the lighter carbon version, the “Carbon Ultra”, has now become much larger. But both this brand’s flagship and the slightly cheaper version with the duroplastic shell now have a new lining made of special activated carbon fibers.

X-lite calls this new fabric technology “carbon fitting”. It should significantly improve the evaporation of sweat under the helmet and ensure a significantly better heat exchange under racing conditions. In fact, you had the feeling that the new inner workings of the X-lite 802 RR could absorb sweat in the helmet very well in a number of hard laps. In connection with the still very good ventilation, the helmet was very comfortable to wear over the entire distance. The helmet lining was also far less wet on the next turn than on the already very good predecessor model, which came second in the PS helmet test (issue 04/2013) and was recommended as a purchase tip thanks to its good price-performance ratio.

Shoei X-Spirit III

Shoei

Shoei X-Spirit III.

Had with Marc Marquez Shoei In the past MotoGP season, I was lucky enough to fine-tune the new X-Spirit III super sports helmet to make it suitable for falls. Marquez is now through, development is complete, and the successor to the X-Spirit II will be available in stores as a new premium helmet from the Japanese brand from March. Premium is also reflected in the prices: In plain black or white, the Shoei X-Spirit III costs 699 euros. Colorful Márquez and Bradley Smith replicas will follow from May for an impressive 839 euros. What is offered for it?

Of course, a completely new helmet shape, which has been trimmed with a tear-off edge for maximum stability at high speed and top ventilation. The real highlight, however, is hidden under the fiberglass shell: upholstery that can be adjusted by four degrees, with which the seat can be adjusted to the preferred head posture. With the long-term test KTM 1290 Super Duke it goes to the first full throttle test on the highway. And that is our first conclusion: The new Shoei X-Spirit III convinces in practice with its stable seat, large field of vision and great ventilation. However, small sliders are annoying. The MOTORRAD helmet test must show whether the shock absorption values are also top.

Arai RX-7V

Arai

Arai RX-7V.

Presented with tremendous effort Arai last year on the Isle of Man the new top model of the Japanese: the Arai RX-7V. Akihito Arai, grandson of the company’s founder Hirotake Arai, proudly explained to the assembled crowd of journalists what has changed compared to the previous model, the RX-7 GP. Put simply: almost everything. The basic idea of a helmet shell that is as round as possible, because it is “easy to roll off” and very hard, has of course been retained – after all, these are the cornerstones of the Arai philosophy. The new shell is now a little rounder, a little lighter (30 g) and a little more stable in the particularly endangered areas. This is made possible by a clever, significantly lower-mounted visor mechanism called VAS (Variable Axis System).

In addition, a new visor lock that is much easier to grip makes operation easier. The already very good ventilation in the previous model has also been updated, the result is an eleven percent higher air flow. More space for the chin and a more comfortable interior are among the other improvements. Nothing has changed in terms of price: plain colors (white, black, matt black) from July for 799 euros, decors expected from autumn for 999 euros. The Arai principle “No internal sun visor” is not shaken, but at least a previous no-go may fall in the foreseeable future: Aki-san told the MOTORRAD editor at a weak moment that an Arai flip-up helmet was being developed.

Sena smart helmet

The Chinese manufacturer Sena, which is best known for communication systems and action cams, did not present a real sports helmet with the “Smart Helmet” at EICMA. But wants to have developed a full-face helmet with a special system of loudspeakers and microphones that eliminates hearing-damaging noise, for example from airflow.

Only important signals such as sirens, engine speed noises and the like should reach the ear, which is completely enveloped by special loudspeakers. The system can then be activated at the push of a button. The Sena Smart helmet be pleasantly light. There is no price yet.
